Hi all,
Our son is going in for achilles tendon lengthening surgery in 2 days. It will be a day surgery so no hospital stay. We're not worried about the procedure at all. He's been a life-long toe walker. This is the only procedure that will enable him to walk flat-footed and we're hopeful that ulitmately it will prove beneficial for him in the long-run. He knows all about the surgery, rather he knows what we've told him what he understands is beyond our knowledge. He is actually excited about it, he's wanted to get it done since consult day.

The reason for the post is I was just curious if anyone else has gone through this as well? What was your experience with it? I know of course all experiences are unique. Our son is 8, school is on board with this and he'll be in a wheelchair for a short-term period following the surgery but that is no issue. Knock on wood for autism self-contained classrooms.

What can I do next?

dd was five when she had it done. we did it in addition to botox to try to relax the muscles. coming out of anethesia was not great but nurses had toys for her and were super pros at it.

she has a scar, which makes sense but i was so focused on other things i didnt think about how big it would be. but it is what it is.

we had great therapists after and she worked really hard with them. and she wears a night brace faithfully.

her situation is a little different so i don't know if this part applies but when she goes through growth spurts i can notice a difference. in the tightness in her heel cord and she will go back up on her toes again. If they havent' explained what they expect the outcome to be, be sure to ask. will he walk completely normal or will this just keep it from being worse, dd was starting to tighten up in her knees and hips so surgery helped that from throwing everything else off too but didn't ever bring her back down completely flat.

also my daughter had a reaction to the cast or the prep wipe or something and sobbed for about three days about the itching, they said some itching was normal, but this was too much. so ask how to care for cast and when to have it checked if there is a reaction.

Friend's son had this done. Make sure you do all the PT after including the exercises they'll give you to do at home.

our situation was fairly different so won't attempt to compare, but just want to mention that you should be prepared for post-op howling. both my boys, who are very cheerful laid-back sorts, came out of anesthesia screaming and fighting. it's very distressing for the parents, but they both were fine when they woke up all the way.
