Abnormal Pap, Anyone Else Experience This and What Happened?

I went in for my normal yearly check up and pap test. They found a cyst by ultra sound that they weren't even looking for and only cause I haven't had a period since July of 09 and wanted to check the lining. Anyway I was worried enough about that since I'm having surgery to remove it in three weeks but then I get a call saying the pap test was abnormal with LGSIL cells that have changed. Now I was given a website and was told put in LGSIL to find out what it was all about. It is a precancerous cell that they are checking for. I have to go in for a precedure and possible biopsy in a week. Scared and wanted to know if anyone else went through this. Thanks in advance. I am 30 yrs old and have three little gilrs 3, 4 and 8.

What can I do next?

I have not had this problem but two of my friends did. One was younger (19) the other was older and they both got normal biopsies. I would not worry until the results of the biopsy.

I had one in 2003, and ended up having the LEEP procedure. I've had 2 babies since (2006 and 2009) with no issues. I've found that an abnormal pap is fairly common and know a few close friend who also have had this. We're all healthy and continue to have annual testing.

Hi C.,
I had 3 biopsies Dec 11, 2009. I had a LEEP (burning of the precancerous cells) Jan 5, 2010. I'm still recovering from the LEEP. I can see that you're already afraid and I don't want to scare you. Please, ask your doctor what to expect during the biopsy in terms of pain or discomfort. Ask how many he/she will take. You should be able to take some Advil before the biopsy but again, speak to your doctor about this.

One more thing, if music relaxes you, take an ipod with you during the biopsy. My doctor had a CD playing and it really helped me.

I had one in 1997 and had an in office procedure (laproscopy i think) to remove. Then again in 2001, this time an outpatient hospital procedure (leep). Fortunately nothing since, it is scary, but a fairly common procedure. I had a child in 2004 with no complications from either. Good luck to you!

I had an abnormal pap about 10 years ago. I went in for the colposcopy and then had to come back every 3 months to make sure my pap was normal. It was normal after that and the "pre-cancerous" cells were gone. The dr told me so many things can cause an abnormal pap....having sex the day before your pap, being too close to ovulation or right after your period...etc. The test is super sensitive and anything can set it off. Try not to be too scared. The biopsy they are going to do is not bad. It mostly feels like mild period cramps. My dr even suggested I pop a couple tylenol before the appt and it wasn't too bad. I was a basket case convinced I had cancer or something...but it was nothing. I know a ton of women who have had the same result. Hopefully this is the case for you. Good luck and try to relax. :)

I had an abnormal pap 2 years ago. The doctors did a colposcopy, but told me that the only thing I need to do are 6-month paps instead of annual. All 3 of them so far have turned out normal, so I can go back to annual paps. The best thing to do is go to all your scheduled visits. This is why the pap is mandatory for insurance coverage, it is a screening test, not a cancer diagnosis, it is there to prevent the development of cervical cancer if there are abnormal cells.

I'm 30 also with a 6 and 3 year old I've had 3 abnormal paps and had the vinegar biopsy done my last one came back normal so I think it's something that most women experience. Just make sure you go for your 6 month check ups till it's normal again!

The key here is "PRE-CANCEROUS". Meaning it could possibly eventually in time turn into cervical cancer. Your Doc is doing the right thing by taking proper precautionary measures to remove. This recently happened to me but not exactly the same as you. I went for my normal yearly routine pap smear. I am almost 34 years old and never ever had an abnormal pap smear but this November it came back as "abnormal" which as explained to me by my doctor isn't uncommon however they wanted me to come back in for a colposcopy or "colpo". I did and a week later I found out that there were some abnormalities there and I have mild dysplasia. I am scheduled in two weeks to have a L.E.E.P where they basically burn off the pre-cancerous cells. As long as you follow their instructions to a tee and continue with your pap smear screenings as advised you should be fine. Most women put off on these type of appointments for whatever reasons and it's like playing russian roulette really. It is so very important to go and get screened. Especially if you are sexually active. Did they say you came back positive for HPV virus?

I had an abnormal pap a few years ago. Then I went in for the colposoky (sp), where they take this honey comb looking thing to get better cells. Found out that I had high grade diplaysia. Then I had a LEEP procedure where they take out the section that is "bad". It took a few days to feel better. I had my first baby 8-9-08. Nothing abnormal since.
