For nighttime, I used Huggies overnights in a size bigger than what my daughter was wearing. They were amazing...she never had a leaky diaper again!
We use cloth diapers for our 2 year old. She hasn't had a disposable on since we came home from the hospital. We have decided to use seventh generation diapers for a trip to Chicago in a few days.
My question is about nights. We currently use 2 cloth diapers to her her through the night. Is one disposable by itself enough? Does anyone cover them with diaper covers? I feel a little silly asking, but I just have no experience with this.
Thanks!

I cloth diaper, too. For traveling, I've used both Luvs & Earth's Best with no problems. And, on one trip, I took cloth diapers for nighttime, 'cause my 2 year-old (who was one at the time) doesn't seem to like the way 'sposies feel, & I wanted her to be comfortable at night (but I only needed a couple for a week-long trip, 'cause she's always been a dry-at-night kid, anyway.) For the next trip (both were trips from the Bay Area to the Milwaukee area), I just did all 'sposies because I had to little ones to pack for & not a lot of suitcase room.
My daughter will be 2 in a few days and we have used 7th generation diapers since she was a baby. I can only remember 2 times that they ever leaked and both times, it was a small wet spot that did not even wet the sheets. I think you are pretty safe using them overnight. Hopes this helps and safe travels!
You may want to experiment before leaving. We bought like 10 packages of seventh generation newborn diapers before he was born, and they don't work well at all with our newborn. They leak with virtually every pee. I think babies' bodies are different and you have to find the brand that works with your baby.
I also use cloth, when we're at home, and Seventh Generation for my 21 month old. At night we use a size larger (size 4) than what she wears during the day (size 3) when we're out, and I put a cloth liner in it. We rarely have accidents with this method.
Instead of 7th Generation, I would recomend Nature Babycare. You can find them at some Target's and at Babies R Us. My son is allergic to the chlorine in normal diapers and these ones are wonderful! We had issues with the 7th Generation brand. They don't hold alot and leaked horribly.
You should be just fine with 1 diaper at night without a cover. I would just make sure to put a fresh diaper on her right before bed.
I use Pampers and one diaper gets all my kids through the night without leaks.
E.,
My son is 14 months and we have used disposable diapers all the time. We use Huggies; we feel they work the best. One diaper has always worked during the night; no leakage. We just make sure he's changed when we put him to bed; we've never had to use a rubber pant thing or anything. Have a great trip!

We normally use cloth for our 22 month old, but had to use Seventh Generation recently when we were dealing with yeast in the diapers. One diaper was enough to get him through the night without any problems. If you run out of S.G. diapers on your trip and need a good alternative, we've used the Target brand diapers before and liked them. They are hypoallergenic and sent-free and fairly simple. Not as good as s.g., but better than Pampers.
I think different diaper brands leak more or less on different kids, depending on body shape. My son was (is) a very slim boy and we found Huggies (we used Costco's Kirtland brand) fit him best. Other moms swear by Pampers or other brands.
I have never had to double up on diapers or had major leak issues. When diaper blowouts started happening, it meant time to move to the next size up, and that took care of problems (until the next growth spurt!)
As for the 2 cloth diapers = 1 disposable - I did not cloth-diaper so I don't know. If typically most babies get through the night with one cloth diaper and you need two because your child is a heavy wetter, then you might want to go with an overnight or larger diaper (but not too large, then it gaps and leaks anyway). But it would be pointless to wear two disposables or put a cover on over the diaper since the cover is "built in".
I would still use sleepers or onesies/pants over the diaper so that *if* any small leaks come out of the diaper, the clothes catch it instead of it going onto the sheets (if that is your goal).
Best of luck!
(and no, I don't do more! I just do things that you don't do and you do things I don't do!!)
She's 2, I would recommend a pull-up. I stopped using seventh generation when my daughter started crawling, because her moving seemed to help it leak. They still weren't bad, but became less effective. Pull-ups are designed to hold a lot more, and heck, you may even be able to start on some potty-training.
I use a diaper that is one size bigger for night. Otherwise our little boy is soaked to the bone. :) That may just be him but that's what works for us. :)
Have a great trip!

I suggest using Huggies Overnight Diapers. You will only need one and no diaper cover. If you dont want to buy two different kinds of diapers you could use the overnight diapers during the day as well. Have fun in Chicago!
I'm a cloth diapered as well but I once used Tushies. Unlike7th Gen the don't have the toxic gels inside. I think it's wood pulp and cotton. They are very absorbent but let your baby feel the wetness like cloth. I think you have to buy them at the health food store.

I haven't used seventh generation, but I know that the costco brand work well. We use them for when we are on trips and they are fine. If you are concerned about nighttime, I'd bring a cover just in case and see how the first night goes. I currently use a bumgenius and extra hemp doubler at night, but get by fine with one disposable at night on trips. (18mo old) Good luck!
I think you should be ok with one diaper but that being said I use a doubler or a night time pull-up on the outside just in case when we travel. Not sure where you're staying but I think the last thing you want to do is change bedding, pajamas etc in a strange place. If you can't find a doubler you can use a maxi pad - just be sure to use extra diaper cream either way.
btw, I can't believe double cloth diapering gets you through the night? Way to go ;-)
I also use cloth 95% of the time, except travel. I read that using a slightly larger size is the way to go. That sometimes works for us! I also sometimes use a gdiaper liner as a booster (because I have some). And if it is only a few days or we have access to a washing machine I sometimes take cloth just for night.

Dera E.,
You've received some really great responses.
My advice would be to do a trial run before you take off. My daughter was allergic to disposables, so that wasn't an option, but you have time to try which ever brand you decide to try and see how well it works.
Do you happen to know any other moms who might be able to give you a "sample" diaper to try so you don't have to buy a whole pack just to test them out?
I can't remember which brand I used for my son, but I also used a "diaper doubler". It's kind of like a wide mini pad that fits inside the diaper and really helps absorb. He slept all night and only a few times had wet jammies around the waist line.
I hope you find what works for you.
Enjoy your trip!
Huggies Overnight diapers (just 1) work great for my child.
We cloth diaper during the day, but my older child was such a wetter at night that we had to move to a disposable. Huggies OverNights were great - sometimes I would use the next size up for extra absorbance. He is 2.5 now and potty trained, but we use 7th generation pull-ups for sleeping. We get the occasional leak, but they are fine 99% of the time. We never put on an extra cover - one diaper is enough. With our 8 month old, I've been using Earth's Best disposables at nighttime. I think we've had one leak... I highly recommend them!
My one suggestion would be to make sure the disposable diaper was on the larger size. My daughter always did fine with disposables at night but if she was about to get too big for one size it definitely helped to put her in the size up. You could also just buy a used diaper cover and put it on top - I think that's a great idea.
I can only speak to Pampers Cruisers, having had no experience with the Seventh Generation brand myself. But yes, one disposable should be enough to last you through the night, and you should not need a diaper cover. Happy travels!
I used to use seventh generation diapers and they worked fine during the night for us without doubling up.
We use the night time Huggies -purple package and available at Walmart. Very rarely have had a problem with leaking. I can count on one hand the times I have had to change the sheets. Make sure you get the right size diaper.....smaller diapers will hold less moisture. Look on the package for the size, it goes according to weight. If her weight is near the max then go to the next size up.
BTW - we never had a problem with diaper rash either.
I am way beyond the diapering days to be able to answer your question (my youngest is 15) but I just want to commend and praise and thank you for using cloth diapers. I did with all three of mine, and I never missed those awful disposables--and hated having to use them when traveling. I haven't heard much of people using cloth these days, so I'm so glad to hear you've made it two years. Good for you!
Have a great time in Chicago, by the way. Love that city!
since our 13 month baby girl decided she didnt want to wear diapers anymore, i've been trying disposable brands, with idea that they will feel less bulky, maybe dryer longer, possibly even that the velcro will be harder for her to open than on her cloth covers... here is what i have gathered: 7th gen seem to be ok for daytime, possibly night if you continue with the 2x change. earth's best last longer and have less smell, so you might be able to do one a night. full circle (raley's eco-brand) is made of corn, holds close to 12 hours of night time urine ( if say your bedtime schedule gets a little thrown off and that nite-nite diaper happens to turn into six books and a ramble around the house and one more feeding, you get the idea!), and they are a pretty good price, often on sale. i know i gave more than you wanted to hear, but i've been going through the cloth vs. disposable battle recently and thought i should share. good luck!
Hi E.,
Generic Costco brand and Walmart work overnight. But, if you're interested there are compostable diapers that I've heard great reviews about. www.earth-baby.com
They are a compostable diaper service and the compostable diapers work and look just like regular disposable diapers. If you're interested and in the San Jose area, you should give them a call.
One disposable works alone for overnight. Good for you for using cloth! Do you know about All-in-Ones? They are easy like disposables and can be made w/lots of padding for overnight. I could make some for your trip, check out www.bun-o-matic.com.
Cheers,
J.
