I need advice...I'm sleep deprived and at the end of my fraying rope!! My 9 year old son (never had an ear infection) was diagnosed with swimmer's ear on Tuesday. He was given steroid drops and we alternated ibuprofen and tylenol for pain. The drops made him worse so they changed the prescription to antibiotic drops. Those were started Wed a.m. By Wed afternoon he was no better and the pain relievers only lasted maybe 2 hours -- so the Dr prescribed 1/2 pill of vicadin --- that did nothing for his pain...late Wed night we got a prescription for numbing drops/gel...that helped some so he slept a few hours. Today is day 3 and nothing is helping!! He's still in alot of pain and not himself. He also developed a fever last night. I'm waiting for a call back from the clinic now but needed some advice from mom's who've been through this.
My daughter had inner ear infections fro 4 years every 6-8 wk this is nothing like hers at all!!
I'm at a loss and see another sleepless night in my near future!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you for the advice!! I took him to the ER -- no doctor's appointments were available. His outer ear infection spread and he now has a middle ear infection. He's on antibiotics -- last night was still rough but this morning he woke up pain free. I am just hoping it lasts!!

My daughter had swimmers ear frequently and inner ear infections each time a tooth grew in. We didn't experience ANYTHING like that. Our doctors always started her on antibiotics asap and if they didn't show vast improvement in 2-3 days, we changed it to a different one. Can't believe Vicodin didn't help either.

Your child hearing is at risk. Get another doc's opinion asap. If you don't, you'll find youself spending the night at the ER. If you find your doctor was all wrong, don't go back. You losing sleep is bad but just think of what your little boy is going through in pain plus lack of sleep and being helpless because he's not in control. You are.

My daughter has had both swimmer's ear and inner ear infection and they are very different. Swimmer's ear is when the lining of the ear canal gets irritated and inflamed from constantly being wet. When I looked in her ear myself, the walls of her ear canal were oozing pus and blood and the skin was peeling off. For my daughter it was MUCH more painful than any inner ear infection she has ever had. Even gently touching the outside of her ear would make her scream. She screamed and screamed for HOURS with swimmer's ear. You can't do much but put in a call to the doc like you already did--maybe he's developed an inner ear infection on top of the swimmer's ear or something? They'll probably want to check him again. Just wanted to let you know my daughter was also in an INCREDIBLE amount of pain too.

Did they give you the wicks to hold the medicine in the ear? They look like tiny ear plugs, long and thin. They soak up the medicine and hold it in the ear so things clear up faster.

I agree with other Moms -- take your son to an ENT. This is past home remedies. Good luck.

I used to have a friend that was prone to swimmer's ear. I would suggest that you get an emergency referral to an Ear/Nose Throat specialist because of the pain.
It is extremely painful and can take a few days to get better. I remember one particular incidence in which it was so bad that they put strips of gauze with antibiotic ointment into her ear canal in addition to systemic abx and she was on oxycodin for the pain for about two weeks (mind you this was an adult woman and she was unable to work or even leave the house due to the pain).
You might want to consider asking for a culture to make sure he doesn't have a resistant strain, swimmer's ear can be caused by MRSA...
Good luck!

go back to the doc. I think the swimmers ear turned into an ear infection. If fluid suddenly starts coming out of his ear and the pain subsides then his ear drum may have broken. My sons did a couple of times and he is fine, but it can affect his hearing.

I would either see another dr or go to an ENT. I have also heard and tried Garlic Infused Olive Oil, put some on a q tip and rub it in his ear. It is a pain reliever and help with the redness and fluid.
