9 Year Old Starting Period

I am not positive but I think my daughter is starting her period. She just turned 9 last month and has developed breast buds over the summer and had begun growing hair this past year. Yesterday she had a BM and said she was bleeding. I had her clean herself real well front and back and couldn't really see anything but thought maybe she had strained too hard so we put some ointment on her bottom and that was it. Today on the way home from school she tells me that she was bleeding when she went pee at school. When we got home I had her clean real well front and back and there was blood on the wipe when she wiped her bottom but not so much when she wiped her vagina. I couldn't see any blood after she cleaned herself. My question is: would a first time period be sporadic--- bleeding on and off and not consistent? There was a tiny bit of blood on her undies, bright red, right in the middle so I couldn't tell if it came from her bottom or vagina. Sorry for being graphic. Since she is only 9, we haven't had the talk yet, but looks like it might be today. I put a call into our pediatrician so I am waiting to hear back from her. Meanwhile I am searching the net for info on first time periods and thought I would post to see what info I could get back right away. Thank you all in advance!

It's possible. My niece started when she was 8. She's big for her age. If all the warning signs were there for your daughter (hair, breasts...) it is very much possible. Poor thing. Be sure to send her to school wearing a pad, and with some extras just in case it gets heavier. It could curb some embaressment if she'd soak through her clothes.

Aawww. good luck.

Could be, although when my girls started it was pretty typical. Is she starting to get pimples, complain about "stomuch aches", seem moody? I sort of sounds to me like she's got hemmoroids or something along those lines, but have the talk so she's prepared. Good luck.

Hello J.,
I don't have much info, but 2 things: 1) It is typical for menstruation to begin sporadically, i.e. not at regular monthly intervals, and not in full force at the beginning. 2) I have read that the hormones fed to cows and other animals by commercial meat and dairy producers (factory farms) to increase their production and profits get passed on to people when we eat the meat, drink the milk, etc., and that this has been one possible cause of earlier onset of menstruation in girls. I couldn't say whether this is a factor for your daughter (I am not assuming it is) but if she eats regular commercial meat and dairy you might check it out. Good luck with the talk! My kids are still toddlers and it's good to get a sense from this web community of all the issues out there around the bend!

that is exactly what happened when my 10 year old got her period for the first time a few months ago. I thought it had to be from constipation and we went through the same things and it turned out to really be it. I was a shocked as you seem to be! And yes, it was sporadic bleeding... not in the night while she was sleeping and very light the next day or so. She has not gotten it every month since so just know there is no rhyme or reason to when it will come again. She just needs to always be prepared. Good luck.
