9 Month Old with Recurrent Pneumonia

My 9 month old daughter is on her 4th bout of pneumonia since November. She can't seem to kick it. She takes the antibiotic and usually acts healthy for a week or two before the wheezing and fever come back. She has also had an ear infection (secondary to one bout of pneumonia) and influenza A. During the 3rd pneumonia we were told she has Reactive Airway Disease and that we should neb her at the first sign of illness. We are currently nebbing her 4x daily with Aluterol and 1x daily with Palmicort. I don't feel it's helping her; it does not make her cough. Her wheezing and breathing seems to be getting worse. We have an appt with a Pediatric Pulmonary Specialist on April 9 as our family doctor thinks she should be tested for Cystic Fibrosis. I'm looking for any suggestions. I'm worried about her, yet have 2 more weeks until we can get in to see anyone and she seems to be going downhill this week even on antibiotic and nebs. There were only 7 days in between the last antibiotic and this one where she seemed to be well. Help?

What can I do next?

I would take her in again. If she's not gettting better.
The breathing issues are not to take likely. Get a 2nd option, or if get real bad get her into the e/r. They may call in a specialist. CHildren's hospital of St Paul/ Mpls are great!

our son too had quite the spell with this, we nebbed him and our day care provider 'couldn't fine the time' (she had two other children...)

we pulled him out of that day care and continued nebbing him, but we also brought him to the chiropractor 1-2 times a week...something about going to the chiropractor really helped ease him out of the re-occuring symptoms, I would suggest that.

Our son was about one year old before he started to go through this very same thing - getting sick about every month and was on 4 different antibiotics within 5 months time; nothing was working. Same thing - he would seem to be to get better - than sick again. Since my husband had extreme allergies and asthma growing up, we decide to take our son to an Asthma / Allergy specialist. GUESS WHAT? Our son was diagonosised with "extreme" asthma and both indoor / outdoor allergies; even some food allergies. Once this was known and we had the proper meds (pill / inhalers / even the neb)-even moved his bedroom to one with different type of carpet-he has not had many problems since. He would only get sick about the time the seasons were about to change (like clockwork). And, now that his is 12, is hardly ever sick and it turned out that the asthma wasn't that extreme and the food allergies were non-existent. When he does start to get sick, we give him allergy medicine and that seems to work. I suggest you definately get her tested for the Cystic Fibrosis; BUT it that is negative (which we hope), see if you can get her to an asthma / allergy specialist.

Unfortuneatly this year has been a bad one. Pneumonia is a scary thing. Especially when so young. My sister-in-law works in the ER and she says that there are multiple viruses going around. They hit back to back.

How is your daughter's immune system. My sis-in-law has seen people sick for two months straight.

We have a patented children's vitamin that would help build her immune system. We have many children that are living healthier lives. Which means less time at doctor.

i would agree with the other post...call the specialist and presure them to get her in sooner as you feel she is getting worse or bring in to the emergency room if she is having problems breathing.

take care!!

my four year old had problems for the first couple years or so of life. We found out he had asthma. I know how scary breathing problems can be! Its terrible. I study natural health and healing. I have learned that food is your best medicine! Dairy is very mucous forming, its just a myth that the best form of calcium is from milk! Take her off dairy right away! make sure she has probiotics and whole grains and fruits and veggies! This could start from a allergy so she may be gluten or wheat sensitive. suppliments are very important, just make sure they are whole food ones with out the extra preservatives and additives. If she has had alot of antibiotics I can gaurentee that her internal flora is out of wack. antibiotics take out the good and bad bacteria in the body,so make sure the probiotic is from a health food store. yogurts are processed and have sugar. sugar is also a trigger for this! This too gets the bacteria out of balance. Another thing that might help is colidal silver, this is a natural antibiotic and kills bad bacteria and leaves the good. see if you can see a natural docter this way she can be treated with out adding to the problem with drugs.
