9 Month Old with Gas

My 9 month old gets terrible gas at night. She wakes herself up 5-7 times a night crying, passes gas and then we can eventually get her back to sleep. She still takes a bottle right before bed, but for the most part is on baby food/people food for meals. I have tried both Mycelin drops and Little Tummies, they don't seem to do anything to help relieve the problem. As you can imagine this is wearing the whole family out so any advice on something to try would be greatly appreciated.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks to everyone! We changed her formula to Nestle Good Start and she has been sleeping like a champion..for 10+ hours at night, 1 in the morning and 2+ in the afternoon. We had her on the soy formula and it must have been the problem.

Thank you again!

My 3 month hold had really bad gas too. We switched formulas and she never has gas anymore. We switched from Similac to Good Start. I recommend trying that! Good luck!

With little tummies, it is often the the foods that they eat for dinner or before bed that give them gas as it sits/digests overnight. Prime culprits are dairy products, soy, corn, wheat, and eggs.
Often they'll outgrow the night time gas when their stomachs can better digest the thing that is bothering them. Maybe you can add a little pro-biotic into the baby food and cut back on some of the items that are high on the allergen list?

Try googling "baby food allergies" for ideas on how to identify what is giving her the gas. Dr. William Sears has some great articles in his "The Baby Book" which is available at most libraries and bookstores.

If you can manage to wean her off that right before bed bottle you will really be doing her a favor. I know it's hard because that night-time bottle soothes them and makes bedtime easier. Try holding her and rocking her and singing her a song and then just lay her down. She'll cry and fuss a bit at first, adjusting to the new bedtime format. But it should help her gas and will definately prevent all that milk sugar from resting in her gums all night and causing future decay. Just a few thoughts. Hope you find the right solution.

Have you tried changing her formula? There are many formulas out there for babies with fussiness or gas. It worked great with my daughter. Maybe she could be having problems because of dairy. I would definately try adjusting her formula and watch what she eats during the day and at dinner before bed.

My daughter had a very similar problem a little younger than your little girl. I had tried Mylicon etc and finally decided to try giving her some acidophilis. I'm sure you'd want to consult your pediatrician...when I asked mine, she said it would be fine. I just crushed the pills up and put them in her cereal or baby food, etc. and it helped A LOT! Hopefully, if you try it, it will work for you too!! Good luck and God Bless!

J., I know how you feel. I am a mother of 3 and 2 of them seemed to get night gas as well. I wish I had a magic pill for you but the truth is, it is a hit and miss trial. Make the baby go to bland baby food and again just like when they were young reintroduce a food one at a time. do not stray from this. add one new food at a time till you discover what foods are causing the problems. Also make sure there is at least 1 hr after last food intake before going to bed. Each baby is differant and this realy is the only way. I know it will not be easy to add only one food at a time (one week or at least 5 days between each food)but it will be so worth it. I feel for you loosing sleep but the baby is in pain also so do this the right way. Good luck and God bless!!

Ask your pediatrician to give her a prescription for Hycosomine drops. It'll clear the gas right out and it only takes 1 or 2 drops. It's the only thing that worked for my son.

are you saying people food as in grown up foods, if so there is your solution the baby is having a hard time digesting the grown up knida of food. some babies can go to grown up food quickly when other babies can not. Her little intestines could be crying out for relief, but not the kind we need, she need relief from grown up food. I say go back to baby food. Even if it means the large jar baby food. she might not even like it at first, but think about what comes first, what she likes or her health.

Hi, i wanted to say i think it's very important to keep your daughter up for a while after her last bottle. Think about going to sleep on a full stomach-you would definately get a tummy ache, right? Same with your daughter. Maybe you need to keep her up for a while so her system can digest the formula. Try not to have her go to sleep while drinking her last bottle. Pick up the book "Babywise" and just take a few of the cues to maybe help with the trouble you're having. It worked for us!
Good luck!

She may have developed a food allergy or food sensitivy to something you are feeding her. My son had severe food allergies when he was little - thank God he (as do most kids) outgrew them by the age of 3. The only thing still lingering is the lactose intolerance.

I would start a food diary and try taking certain things out of her diet for a week at a time to see if it gets any better. Nuts, wheat, corn, soy, eggs and milk are major culprits.

Please check out www.askdrsears.com and look at the FAQs section. He has a lot of great information about gas, food sensitivities, etc.

Good luck!

I was going to ask what are you feeding her before bed. Stay away from hotdogs, applesauce, beans. That kind of thing. And I would prop her to give her a bottle, and make sure she gets the burp out. That might help some. Good luck

Hi J.,
Trying sitting her up more when giving her the bottle. And make sure you avoid real gassy foods such as applesauce and sweet potatoes. And don't forget to burb her. I know she is older but it might help.

Hi J.,
i have a 7 month old who gets gassy too. The gas drops usually do well for me but I have also switched to giving her only a bottle of juice before bedtime with mostly water. About 1 1/2 oz of juice with 4 oz or so of water. It seems to help with the gas instead of the formula. I also try not to feed her after 5:30 and try to burp her (A LOT) from that time on to get all that gas out. Hope that helps. Good luck.

In my daughters case, the Mylicon drops didn't help but the Walmart brand ones did. I don't know why the name brand ones did nothing, but the WalMart brand did wonders: and was much cheaper!

Also, if she still has a bottle maybe you should get a fast-er flowing nipple?

The only problem with the perscription gas relievers is that they tend to make the baby VERY sleepy. I really like Gripe Water. It can be hard to find but if you ask your pharmacy they may have it behind the counter, however, you do not need a perscription to buy it.
