9 Month Old Teething Baby Boy SCREAMS When Even Looks at a Bottle!!

Does anyone know of anything I can do to help my baby??? He has 5 teeth & is obviously teething, but he's NEVER done this before! He won't take a sippy cup, regular cup or bottle! But he'll take his pacifier no problem. He'll also stick anything under the sun in his mouth... so it can't be THAT sore. I did, however get him to drink out a medicine dropper (stop laughing), but I can't keep doing that!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone for your responses. The refusing to drink lasted about a week. We did take him to the dr. to rule out any type of infection... there was none. They had no answers for me. We pretty much just let it take its course. I still don't know what the cause of it was, but its over now & he's back to eating like a CHAMP! We did try the teething tablets & orajel but that didn't work for him. I'm just glad he's back to my normal baby now!

Have you tried homeopathic teething tablets? You can find them in Wal-Mart in the vitamin section. I swear by these and have used them for all 3 of my kids - my dd is still using them at 15mos as we are cutting her 1 year molars.

Hi K., have you tried freezing a wet wash cloth and letting him gnaw on it? My son loved that, then when he's done chomping he might consider putting a bottle or cup in his mouth to drink. Between cold rags and anbesol my son pulled thru.

I"m sure you'll get alot of advice. My son is 2 years and whenever he had teeth coming in we gave him baby orajel. It seemed to do the trick. As he got older and it was harder to get to the tooth in question our doctor just told us to give him baby tylenol (the amount that goes with the babies weight) you can find this out from your doctor. That seemed to help a little too. Are you sure it's teething? Maybe he has a sore throat? When my son wouldn't eat and then wouldn't drink I took him in and it was determined he had a sore throat and they said if he doesn't keep drinking, to use the dropper...so that wasn't such a funny thing you did, it's what you need to do to make sure he gets what he needs. ANyway, hope this helped in some way. Good luck!

JUST GO WITH THE HYLANDS TABLETS...Ibuprophin is a very harmful and irresponsible to ignor a major risk factor so don't "load him up on it" whatever you do. It causes liver malfunction. I don't mean to sound so harsh but as a matter of fact on the extreme end of things an aquaintance of mine just had her son in the hospitol for two days detoxing from a an Ibuprophin over dose. I mean obviously it's not difficult to just stick with the recommended dosage but it's just plain not neccesary. On a nice note, I had wonderful luck with anything with chamomile in it. (like a second steeped tea bag) I used the Hylands "teething" tablets that people have been talking about and they really did work well and fast. The chamomile helps with all kinds of problems related to "teething" including diaper rash, diarhea, pain and irritability to name a few. If you have any books one "the first years" you'd be surprised what practical advice you'll find in them. For your baby jsut consider that people on this planet for thousands of years have been using the same herbs and spices and botanicals and those kinds of naturally existing things are complimentary with the body.

Does he tug at his ears? Often teething babies will get earaches which could explain his fussiness. (Happened to one of my 3 children.)

Sucking from the bottle would make him hurt more. Check with your doctor.

hello,
glad to hear that has passed. If you run into it again try a handless bottle. it is like a pacifier bottle hybrid. the baby has to suck the liquid thru a tube from the bottle to the attached nipple.
My son went thru the same thing. he was crying cuz he was hungry but wouldn't eat. this worked like a charm. Burlington and babies r us have them.
also frozen waffles, bagels & teethers help soothe the pain.

Hi K.,

I agree with the Hyland's teething tablets, they have really worked for my daughter (who has teethed from 5 mo. to 2 years almost nonstop). They can be found at a local natural food store or Wal-Mart, Rite-Aid in the homeopathic section. I would also suggest the softer nipples for his bottle and sippy cups. There are also massage techniques to relieve pain, if he lets you that close to those throbbing gums. Oh, and stay away from oragel, I heard that it actually toughens the gums and makes the tooth harder to poke through. Good luck from a first time parent too.

At 9 months, he does still need the nutrition from formula, so I totally understand the concern. I would try the straw cups, especially since he'll be able to use them for a while. I would also limit his pacifier to at the most, bed time and nap time.

If it's teething, Hyland's Teething Tablets may help. His jaws are so close to his ear canal that it could be causing ear pain like an ear infection. If he's recently had a cold, it's also possible that the fluid from his little sinuses dripped into his ear canal and there's an infection, so it can't hurt to have him checked out.

Give him infant Motrin!!! Check the bottle for dose and if you're not sure call the pediatrician. This stuff works great for teething. It's better than tylenol and lasts longer, up to 6 hours. It won't hurt him at all and has no side effects. It should make him feel good enough to drink again. Good luck. I'm a first time mother of an 18 month old, hang in there. It gets better! R.

My son would never take a bottle during the entire time he was breastfed,20months, but he would use a straw! Perhaps because his older sibling was using it, I am not sure, but they have great soft ones available now with a flip cap to keep them from spilling when not in use. A good friend of mine is a Speech Pathologist and she says that a straw is far less detrimental to speech developement than the regular sippy's and bottles. So, there is a plus side. Good Luck! T.

K.,

Wow, what a wide range of responses!

I would agree with the suggestion to take your little guy to the Doctor to rule out an ear infection!!
My first son nursed primarily, but would take a bottle at bedtime from his daddy, who would put him to bed. (A little break for me!) Then out of the blue at six months, he refused to take a bottle. This was totally out of character, and went on for several nights. We tried different bottles, different temperatures, formula and breast milk- he would not take a bottle. Only once, did he briefly tug at an ear (which can also be a teething sign). Just to be on the safe side, I felt that I should have him checked out, and sure enough- ear infection!!
Of course, he never would go back to taking a bottle (maybe associating that with the ear pain), and I had to struggle for a while with different types of bottles, nipples, sippy cups, etc, before I found a straw cup that would work for him. (And even that took a while for him to really get the hang of.) We now own a wide variety of things to try with our second son who is ten weeks old, when he reaches the point of transitioning to a "big boy cup".
Good luck!! And do what feels right for you!

Hope that helps & don't worry, once teething passes, there will many more & exciting obstacles to encounter!!

I have never actually heard of this, and neither of my children used a bottle, but I would suggest trying to mix his formula or watever other liquid with baby cereal. Make it more soupy then you usually would, and see if he will eat it with the different texture. if that doesn't work, try just feeding him solids. also, ask the doctor, and try putting baby orajel on the gums.

Try giving him something cold to chew on, like a teether toy from the fridge or an ice pop just before you want to feed him. Maybe if you numb his gums a bit first, it won't hurt so bad. Will he eat anything from a spoon? Maybe use some cereal to thicken his formula enough to spoon-feed, and lots of fruit to help keep hydrated. They make a pacifier that you can use to give medicine. Try to find one of those, and fill the little reservoir with water. It's only a little bit, but every bit helps.

I understand your frustration. My son was the same way. I bought a teething net from Babies R Us (or toys r us) and filled it with very juicy fruits (any melon, grapes, strawberries). I would give that to him with his bottle. I think he got annoyed about not getting enough of the fruit's juices that he started taking his bottle again. You can also try freezing the nipple. Hi K. -

I have an 8 month old, and she did this same thing at 5 1/2 months. She took a bottle fine up until then and one day she freaked out when we tried to give her one. I wish I had a miracle cure, but honestly I've been offering her a sippy cup every day since for 2 months and she is finally catching on. My pediatrician said to forget the bottle at this point and focus on the sippy cup. I am still nursing, and I also stopped mid-morning and mid-afternoon feedings and offered a cup instead. This is what did it, I think. She was hungry and needed a little snack at this time, and so she eventually figured out she could get it from the cup. I started with water, then moved to diluted juice and now formula (she still refuses breast milk from a cup).

Has your son taken a sippy cup at all? Or did he stop this along with the bottle? One piece of advice I heard that I have to believe is every strange thing these babies do is a phase, so I'm sure he'll come around.

Good luck!

when my daughers teethed(and yes it's a hard part to deal with during the first year) but i used a soft bristled toothbrush and some baby orajel and gently rubbed it on the gums..it helps with the pain and at the same time helps with blood circulation in the gums, eventually it may even softly wear down the gums enough for that new tooth to come through. another great idea is the cold teething toys that you put in the refrigerator, or a wet washcloth put in the freezer for some time..then take it out for him to chew on..the coolness may help a lil bit.

Hope something helps soon..just remember ..EVENTUALLY all the teeth will be in !! this doesn't last forever:D you will do great!!

Sounds a little crazy!!
To me it seems like it is a bottle issue and not teething. Maybe it is what is in the bottle (temp. of formula/ water??) or maybe he just doesn't want the bottle anymore. Did you try the sippy cups with the straws??
This might sound dumb, but is he getting anything out of the nipple, try opening it up more??? (If you can get him to take it!!)
I would assume he is eating solid food well so I wouldn't worry to much about nourishment, this phase will hopefully pass soon. If you get really concerned I would call his ped.

Also I have never used them, but I know people who swear by the teething tablets (that is if you think it really is teething)
Hope that helps, good luck!!

Hi

I have 2 (17 and 35 months). Neither of mine ever really had issues with feeding thankfully, but I have a good friend that also has 2 little ones and both had issues at times. She nursed both - well tried...Her oldest wouldn't take anything at birth and she basically ended up resorting to the med dropper. She pumped her milk and then fed it to her in the dropper. She ended up moving to a bottle eventually, but feeding was definitely an ordeal. Her second was the opposite - would only nurse and did exclusively through about 10 months when she started really getting fussy even after nursing. It turned out that her milk had been gone for about a week or so when she finally realized the problem. At that point she moved to a sippy pretty easily for her - I guess she was just thankful for the formula at that point! They certainly can be picky little creatures, can't they?

Have to consulted your pediatrician? Usually you can just call in with a concern and have them return your call to avoid dealing with an office visit for suggestions. The biggest problem would be dehydration if this is ongoing I would imagine and they would advise you as to when they need to see him or intervene. Otherwise, you'd think he'd eventually just break down and accept some kind of drinking device!

What are you feeding him in the dropper? Formula? Maybe try different liquids in the cup/sippy...water, juice, formula. Have you tried a straw? Mine always loved straws. They learned to use them by my husband holding the liquid in the straw (vacuum trick) and letting it go slowly into their mouths as they sucked. There are quite a few fun straw "sippy" cups available if he seems to like the straw. Also, what about trying popsicles or freeze pops? You could offer ones made with juice or even make your own. The cold may help to numb his mouth and will also help hydrate him. I'm not sure how well formula freezes though... You could get a little formula into him through making cereal with it though or mixing into other foods when it makes sense.

Good Luck!
H.

Oh, you poor thing. I am a first time mom too with a 9 month old as well, who is also teething. So far he is taking everything for the most part, but are you trying to relieve the pain with tylenol or any infant acetaminophen products? Mine was having trouble sleeping at night so I would give him the dose of tylenol but since that takes a little while to work, i would alleviate the current discomfort with Hyland's Teething tablets, they are homeopathic and dissolve under the tongue although i have a little trouble getting them under there :) but it seems to work. As a nurse, this is my advice and as a mom I know it is frustrating. If you do give your little pumpkin some tylenol make sure it is you doctor's recommended dose for the age and weight because you don't want to accidently poison the baby. I think it would be really bad to watch your baby have it's stomach pumped. i have seen it on an adult, not pretty :) anyway you can also try something cold on the gums, I would give mine frozen strawberries in that little mesh contraption made for fruit, he loved it, but the pain relief is only temporary. so you can get all of these items at wal-mart in the baby section except for the tylenol, that is in the pharmacy section. I hope this helps! J.

Wow! What a dilemma!! Have you tried purchasing another type of bottle, with a nipple similiar to his pacifier?

In the natrual food store, there is a medicine for teething that is completely natural and safe. My friend tried it and she said it worked. Her baby calmed down and was much more comfortable. I don't remember the name of the medicine, it was a small quick dissolve pill you place on the baby's tongue.

How about some Ora-Jel? Tylenol for you? :)

Teething is TERRIBLE!!!!!!! Anyway, I'm sure you've probably done this already- but keep her loaded up on ibuprofen (Motrin). It has an anti-inflammatory component and works better for teething than Tylenol. I felt like I was making her a medication junkie (and in the process being a really bad mom), but that was the ONLY thing that got us through- and my pediatrician said it was ok. We kept her medicated for almost all her waking hours for days at a time.....it was really hard and I felt like a terrible mom, but it DOES eventually get easier for the teething part! GOOD LUCK! C.

ok as a first time mom myself i was so grateful my mother was an LPN aka nurse. But neways when my son was born he was the hungriest thing i had ever known. I of course could not keep up and put him on formula. about a year old he bit through a nipple from the bottle...well i quit that real quick but then with teething he couldnt be on tylenol 24/7 just to be able to drink out of a sippy..and was not able to drink regularly through an adult cup....my trick...use a straw and supervise. I have tried every color straws and styles known to man...by the way get rid of the pacifiers...they can "magically " disappear real quick which makes them go for anything they can including a cool new sippy just to be able to drink and bite...also dont use the sippys that have straws they are choking hazard and the ones that have attached bottoms that can hold food are a waste of money. Also if the formula is too cold or too hot it can be a strong deterent to their gums.I think if that doesnt work try softening up freeze pops so that they are half melted and u can also make them outta anything and if the child likes the cold numbing on their gums all the more reason...alot of sleepless nights brought out my creativity! Ok well i think I went on long enough good luck and let me know if u need any advice I am learning alot from a picky 2 year old!

Maybe his nipples/sippy cup spouts are too soft for him. One of my boys went throug this @ 9mos. I actually had to switch nipple brands to a brand that was something a little harder.
Since he is taking to the pacifier, maybe you could try a nipple that is similar to that shape.
I'm not sure what level you're at with jar foods, but he may take better to the spoon than the bottle, anyway. Sometimes, when they're teething, their ears are bothered, and the sucking motion, or even having to tilt their heads back, is bothersome. I'll bet he is using that pacifier as more of a chew toy than anything else. So using jar food as a substitute of lost nutrients (even though, with him biting, it'll be more of a tug-of-war game) will help a little. If neither trick works, rest assured that this phase, like many others, will pass soon. Just keep up with his pain releif (orajel/tylenol)He will not starve by missing a few bottles (my DR. has stated many times to me) & when he is hungry enough, he'll come around.

I am trying not to laugh, but isn't it funny - kids and their quirks?! the only think i could think of is to freeze fruit just or give your baby 100% fruit pops... the old may help the gums and the fruit juice may help to prevent dehydration.

Good luck.

I am nuts, i reread your memo and juice for a nine months- old- i am special.... forgive me... um frozen milk?
