9 Month Old Sleeping Problems - Reynoldsburg,OH

My son, up to this point, has been a "dream" sleeper. He was sleeping through the night at 4 months. We have him on a bedtime routine that really worked for him. His naps were great. I would, at both bedtime and naptime, just lay him down in his crib and he would fall asleep.
Everything has changed in the last month and I'm not sure what is going on. He is now waking up multiple times in the middle of the night. Not going down to sleep at naps or bedtime without struggle. I've tried every method I have read about. Nothing has worked. I'm at a loss and don't know what to do. (I also want to note that he cut his first teeth at 5 months, and has 6 teeth already. So I don't think teething is the issue.)
Any advice would be greatly appreciated
Thanks

It can be anything. It will eventually resolve. For my children whenever they were about to go through a new stage we would have interrupted sleep. I would say to be consistant and try the diffrent methods for at least a week maybe two until you find the method that works best for your child. In the meantime while you are going through sleep deprivation hell just remember to sleep whenever you can and ask for help.

I feel your pain!! My baby is 17 months old, and slept great through the night until last month after the time change! Same thing, he was getting up multiple times during the night, barely napping and if he did it was a FIGHT!! After a week or so, I just started letting him cry it out (within reason of course) because I was ready to lose it!! After a few days, its gotten much better! I wait for 10 min. at night before I even think about going in to get him, then I try to just reassure him and leave the room again. Isn't it amazing how much an hour can just send everything into a tail spin? Good luck :)

My son is 10 months and just recently started sleeping through the night, he has this past month started taking very short 30 minute naps and does fight the sleep alot. He's also had multiple ear infections then had tubes and still has ear infections, I would think maybe having his ears checked possibly? My son never tugged at his ears or had a fever with his ear infections he just would not lay down.

If he's only got 6 teeth then I'm not sure why you're assuming it's not teething. Many kids get 8 teeth by 12 months and 4 molars between 12 and 18 months. Their jaws can hurt as the teeth are coming up, not just as they break the skin. I've read that analgesics (acetaminophen, ibuprofen, etc...) aren't proven to help pain in babies and toddlers. You're better off using something homeopathic like Arnica or Hylands Teething Tablets. You can try Orajel, but it's really just a topical solution, it doesn't help down in the jaw if that's where it hurts. Besides, you have to use a TINY amount because it can get in their throats and make them choke when they can't feel the need to swallow.

I found "The Baby Whisperer Answers All Your Questions" when my sons had sleep issues after sleeping fine.

Have you changed anything in his diet? He shouldn't be on milk yet, but he could have cheese and yogurt. If you started those maybe it's a dairy protein issue.

Good Luck:)

Whenever mine starts fighting sleep it's usually an ear infection, so my advice would be take him to the dr for a quick ear check. Good luck!

Actually teething could be a problem. Even though he's early on teeth he has others that are "readying themselves" to come in. Most people think the only time teeth hurt is when they are actually breaking through the skin. Well, not necessarily true. It is believed that as the teeth start making their way down inside they can also cause pain and then of course as they come through they do. Until kids get all their teeth in, teething can always be a cause. If you are a "believer" in giving Tylenol/ Motrin for teething, give it a try and see what happens. My feeling is...would you go without any if you had a toothache? My doc told me this when my twins were little (9yo now) and whenever they would start in with some "strange" behavior for them, invariably I would give them some Tylenol for a few days and it would get better. Goodluck

Is your son getting ready to walk? I read or heard something once that said when babies are learning something new like crawling, walking, etc., they have interruptions in their sleep. I have no idea how credible this information is seing as how I can't remember where I heard it. But, if it's true, it could be something that's just a phase and he'll come out of it.
You mentioned you've tried different methods. I have recently read the book "Healthy Sleep Habits Happy Child". My daughter is 7 months, but I noticed in the book, there are changes in sleep patterns starting at around 9 months. It could be the shedule you've been doing, no longer applies. For example, if you've been putting him down for 3 naps, he may no longer need that third nap and will sleep better at night? You may have already thought of that:) I wish you luck and hope you get some sleep!
