9 Mo Baby Boy with Allergies

Hi,
I am a 38 yr old mom with a 9 mo old that I am sure has allergies. He wakes up sneezing just about every day and all throughout the day with runny nose...We are in the process of getting rid of the dog and cat. He takes baby Zyrtec which does nothing for him. My question is, does anyone have an infant with allergies and can you get them tested? I have allergies and I take shots but I don't know about his age. Could it be a food allergy too? Any experience with this? Thanks in advance for any advice.
J.

There's a powder supplement that you can mix in with his formula or cereal that helps so much with allergies. It's called OPC-3. You can find it online at www.marketamerica.com/rebeccahill.

If you want to read all the science behind it, you can go to www.marketamericascience.com. It's an amazing product!

Good luck

It probably is allergies-they can be inhereted. We use NAET and it's wonderful. My daughter had a constantly running nose when she was an infant and it stopped when we switched her to lactose-free milk. Good luck!

Hi J., this isn't something to decide from other's
experience. Take him to a pediatric allergest. It could
be any number of food allergies, but he'll have to be tested.

What I'm amazed at in reading all of these responses is what pediatricians are telling parents. Our daughter starting showing signs of allergies at 3 weeks of age. I was blessed to have a pediatrician who was also an allery specialist. They can test for allergies at an early age without doing skin tests, by doing blood tests. Our daughter had three of those tests done before she was given a skin test at age 6. I am so glad we did it early. As a mom I knew something was not right as she would have allergic reactions to almost every food. The RAST (blood)test that we did at age 1 confirmed that. Most importantly we found out that she has a severe allergy to peanuts. She has now outgrown most of those allergies (except peanuts). I cannot believe any pediatrician would not suggest doing the blood test. It is simple and very helpful, and my suggestion to anyone whose pediatrician would suggest otherwise is find a new pediatrician.

It definitely sounds like allergies. But, I would not go and get rid of your animals until you find out for sure they are a trigger. It could be a number of things, INCLUDING foods. You can have allergy testing done, contact a pediatric allergist to have that done. My son is 2 and has severe allergies to MANY things. Yes, pediatricians know many things, but an allergist will be able to help you find what his triggers and allergies are. Allergen pillow cases and crib mattress covers might be a start as well. Good luck.

Your Ped can do the blood test and go from there. My son was tested at 7m and come to find out he was allergic to peanut, wheat, milk, and eggs... The did do a skin test to find out the specific amount of being allergic and now he's tested every 6m. He's now 20m and doing just fine now that we know what he can't have/be around. Good luck!

You can get him tested. Ask your pediatrician for a list of allergists, you don't even need a referral.

My daughter had a food allergy, I know, not the same thing. They told me that I couldn't have her skin tested until she was one. I had also asked my doctor about allergies because I have them and had asthma as a kid. The doctor said that it was very unlikely that he would show symptoms at that young of an age. I don't know if I believe him or not, but that is what I was told. I took my daughter to an allergist after she turned one and they poked her in the back about 12 different times and could have done more, but I was pretty certain what she was allergic to. Good luck

I have a natural health business and I have worked with other families with allergy/asthma issues successfully. One recommendation is to consider switching cleaning and laundry brands to non-toxic natural alternatives. Traditional brands can be allergy/asthma triggers. I can also provide information and resources for natural solutions which others have successfully used - reducing and even eliminating medications. If you are interested in additional information, send me a message - I would be happy to help.

Could it be dust or a pollen allergy instead? I only ask because I read last week that kids born into houses with a dog or cat have almost no chance of being allergic to that animal. I don't know if you've had your dog and cat since his birth, but you might want to have him allergy tested before you get rid of the dog and cat since it's likely not them!!

My son has had pretty bad outdoor allergies since he was born. Claritan made him vomit and though the Zyrtec did work okay, nothing beats Singulair. He is a different kid without it.

His pediatrician advised against allergy testing at that age, and said since he didn't think they were food related it wasn't worth putting him through the testing. They still mostly do the back scratches to determine allergies, and the doctor said it would just be hard on him and me and he didn't it was a good idea until Matthew got older.

And now fortunately, he's a little older, 6, and doesn't have near the problems that he did. He still takes the Singulair, I haven't been bold enough yet to try and take him off, last time I did was a year and a half ago and within a week he was a mess, droopy, drippy eyes, nose, just not feeling well at all. They do make singulair sprinkles for babies his age that you can add to some applesauce, you might want to ask the doc about those. If you have any other questions I can help you with let me know!

I have partnered with a Health and Wellness Company. I have asthma myself. Have suffered TERRIBLY with my asthma. I have switched ALL my cleaning and laundry brands to nontoxic natural alternatives. I do not use my meds half as much as I used to. I believe it is all due to my switching my cleaning and laundry brands. You absolutely can get your son tested and should find a pediatric allergist in your area to do so. My son began showing signs of allergies when I stopped nursing him at 9 months of age. He was congested, had a runny nose and seemed to have a cold that went on forever. For him, it ended up being food, seasonal, pet and chemical allergies. Unfortunately, we only found out after he had a severe asthma attack at 10 1/2 months old and was in ICU and intubated for several days. For your child, it could be a food allergy, seasonal allergies (different ones are active different times of the year), chemical allergies (i.e. pesticides, rug cleaners, etc.), pet allergies, or environmental allergies (dust, mold, etc.).

I don't know that they would do shots for a child that young, but I would definantly take him to an pediatric allergist to have him tested, gather information, and discuss treatment options.

Best of luck to you as you seek your answers.

J.,
my son had the same probs. i work with family med drs and your baby will grow in and out of this. I know thats not much of a help. cows milk helps to triger our allergies. You might want to try soy if you are not breast feeding. you could put a humidifier with sea salt in his room. also could try an adult pillow under the head and shoulders. NO PILLOW CASE. please be careful and read all you can about any meds or injeactions any doctor may offer. that is your baby!!! good luck

J....I am a nurse for a pediatric ENT and the answer to your questions are as follows:

1. you should not part w/your animals yet. wait until you find out for sure that your son has allergies. a simple blood test can do this for you. understand that testing him now does not determine allergy issues for life, he could test positive for allergies now and in 5 years test negative for the same things. MOST doctors will not do skin testing on children under 5yo.
2. no, we will not do allergy shots for an infant.
3. yes, he could have food allergies.
4. if the zyrtec isn't working for you and your regular pediatrician put him on this, it's time to see an ENT/Allergist.

hope this helped! have a great day!!

yep they can do it all with a blood test. I would not recommend using a skin/prick test, due to the fact he is so young.

Hi J.,
I would recommend getting an IgG Food Allergy Test, they also have one similar for environmental issues, it would be best to get both. What they do is test for delayed reactions to foods (and the environmental does the same for other possible culprits) You can get this done under your insurance or you can use Great Plains Laboratory (they have a website) they send out the kit, you get the draws at your local lab and then send them back and your doctor can go over the results with you.

We are waiting for food allergy results to come in any day now and we are also scheduled for NAET - which is allergy elimination. A bit pricey, but it can get rid of allergies permanently so we feel it is worth it for our son.

J., I have a 9 month old daughter who also has allergies. Her main symptom is eczema, not necessarily a runny nose. We took her to get her allergies tested, based on her pediatrician's recommendation, and I'm glad we did because she has several allergies, including a severe peanut allergy. I'm not sure where you live, but we went to Midwest Allergy (23 North of 270), and were happy with them. Good luck!

We had the same problem with our three year old. We got an air purifier when she was 8 months old and put it in her bedroom. Immediately she started sleeping better and not waking up with a cough or congestion. The happy side effect is that the purifier acted like a white noise machine.

I babysat a child that was so allergic to animals he almost died by his 1st birthday. The parents had an indoor dog & also the babysitter. I got him after this incident because I have never had any indoor pets. You can have him tested & if he is allergic, remember your pets have been all over your carpet & furniture. The family I knew had to go to wood floors & get rid of all cloth furniture & the dog before bringing the child home from the hospital. Good luck!

Two ounces of mangosteen juice a day totally helped me with my allergies that'd I've had ALL my life! I sell it, and I know it seems everyone that sells a product on here is always recommending their product for everything ha-ha...but I am being 100% sincere that my allergies were fixed by this and i personally know others who've experienced the same thing. A bit of diluted XanGo juice in his bottle may help and certainly cannot hurt! :-)

Hey J. - welcome to my life!! I so feel what you are going through and I would like to make a simple suggestion. My daughter was the same way until I fnally got smart enough to have the immunocap alllergy test done with her. It's a simple blood withdrawal and examination. Took 3 seconds (maybe) to get her blood drawn. After years of more medications than I care to admit, she's allergic to milk. I read about it when she was less than a year and almost switched her to soy back then. Honestly, there was something in me that just felt it couldn't be the milk and how could she go without traditional cow's milk. Little did I know. Anyway, soy is better for kids anyway and once you get a handle on what has milk and what doesn't it's an easy change to make. I found out in December and it took a couple months to get used to but as of now she has been allergy/asthma free for a month. Hope this helps

when my son was little he had the bad alergys, manly seasonaly and the dust. zyrtec for a while that didnt work so they ended up switching his meds that worked, see if they can switch for you. if it was food allergy I think you would have a different type of reaction not the runny nose type.
