9 1/2 Month Old Baby Boy Fuss and Cry About Everything

I have a 9 1/2 month old baby boy who recently had been fussy and crying about everything. Whenever we change his diaper, he would scream and cry and would try to kick his way out. We literally have to chase after him to change his diaper. When we give him a bath he would fuss and cry when we take off and put on his clothes. He just started being this way recently. I know he's been teething so it could be that. I just don't understand why he would cry and fuss about everything when he is not even in pain. He also doesn't like it when we wipe his hands or clean his face or put sunblock on him. I wish he wouldn't fuss about all the daily routine stuff that we have to do for him.

I would like to know if any mom has gone through this and I hope this is just a phase.

What can I do next?

Dear M., I agree with Kate. Please be patient with your LO. He does not have the words to communicate yet his needs and fears, so he is doing the best he can. You can try to explain, emphathize and be his spokesman. For example: Say mommy is now going to change your diaper. To do this, I lift your bottom, clean your bottom and put on nice cream so your tushy does not get red....Or...I know you don't like to have your face washed. Why don't we put our hands under the cool water, does not that feel nice...etc.

I find when I talk and explain etc, it helps me connect to my LO and he feels more assured.

Good Luck.

Jilly

My son, who is 8 months, is the same way. He has always hated to have his clothes changed and ever since he started to roll over (and now he is crawling, pulling himself up to stand, very active) he fights getting his diaper changed. Your son does have a mind of his own, just like there are things that you don't like, he has them too. There are so many milestones that babies are dealing with (teething, crawling, pulling themselves up, walking, etc) he doesn't want to be held still even for a minute, he wants to GO!!!! Be patient and be happy that he has a mind of his own and is excited about his new progress. It will pass.

Is he tired?
Is he napping?
Babies this age, usually nap 3 times a day. 2 at the least.
If not, they are fussy all day.

He is also developing more...
it will pass.
MANY phases will occur. All part of normal development.
Not always easy. But it indicates that they are developing on par.

9 months old, is also a "growth-spurt" time... and anytime a child also hits milestones or changes in development, they get tweaked. Growing-pains for a child. And then the parent.
Just flow with it.
All babies/kids go through that. It is not unusual.

A good book is: "What To Expect The First Year" or "What To Expect- The Toddler Years."

all the best,
Susan
