8 Month Old and Crawling

My DD is 8 months and is on track developmentally-except she shows no interest in being on her tummy or crawling. She can and does roll over-she just doesn't want to stay there. She'll hang out on her back, (like she is right now), or sitting up or in her exeosaucer, etc...just fine.

She also is very strong on her back-kicks her legs and propells herself quite well across the floor while still on her back!

Is she maybe going to skip crawling and go to walking-should I encourage her more-she is #2 so I wonder if part of it is she get's less one on one attention?

What can I do next?

My daughter, also #2, was right on track developmentally as well. Except she sat up at 6 months and decided she didn't need to go anywhere until about 10 months before she started crawling. She didn't walk until 15 months. Maybe she's trying to allow you to "baby" her longer. Relish in it -- do not worry! She is just fine!

MY DD is also child #2 and she didn't start crawling until 9 months. She, however, was sitting up at 5.5 months. She started pulling herself up and walking along furniture @ the same time she started crawling. She also hated tummy time and didn't start rolling over until 7 months, which is how she would get around until she started crawling. She just turned 1 year old yesterday and started taking steps by herself about 2 weeks ago, but has yet to actually start walking. Then, on the other hand ,my DS started crawling at 7.5 months and walked at 11 months and has always been advanced in his developmental stages. So, like some of the others have said, it just really depends on your baby. Each one, even siblings, develop at different rates. I kept thinking to myself, "will my DD ever crawl?" and then poof, she did.

My first baby, a daughter is now 3 and a half, and she runs and walks fine, has great large and small motor skills and is very smart ! She didn't crawl till later, around 8 months, before that, she LOVED to scoot on her head and feet upside down, like you are talking about your daughter doing - she did that as her main mode of transportation from 6-9 months( with some minimal crawling in the last part of that) and then she learned to walk right at 10 months. She crawled for about a month and a half total, and still scooted on her back if she wanted to "carry something" in her hands. My girl is fine. All kids are different, she will be fine!

Our son started walking about two days after his first birthday. He started crawling about a month before that. He was cruising around the furniture long before he crawled. Our daughter started crawling at about 10 months. She didn't roll over until she started crawling. Every baby is on their own time frame. I don't think you need to worry, but if it would help you feel better you can always talk to your doctor.

crawling is not a milestone because many children don't crawl the important thing is that she has some method of getting around by 10 months or so whether its rolling, scooting, cruising, or walking. My oldest never crawled while our second son could not wait to crawl he was about 5.5 months when he started so he could follow his brother.

She probably won't skip it. I've worked with younger children and I rarely saw that. What may happen is that she'll speed through crawling. She'll just master it within a day or two and then move to cruising furniture within a month of that. That's kind of what my son did. He started crawling around 9 1/2 months, then was cruising by about 10- 10 1/2 months. Then full blown walking by 11. When you say she kicks her back legs and propels herself on her back, that's still a form of mobility and that's what most doctors will look for in terms of development. A great motivator for children her age is to get a full length mirror and prop it on its side so she can watch herself roll, rock on hands and knees and attempt crawling. They get excited watching their reflection even though at this point they don't know its their reflection.

She'll get there :). She has the added advantage of having a sibling to watch and motivate her as well. I wouldn't worry about "less one on one" with her, she sounds like she's doing great.

My little boy is also 8 months and baby number 2. He's the same as your daughter.....happy to roll from back to tummy over and over and can really get around pushing with his legs while on his back. I was like you and worried about it (especially since he's been a little delayed in all his milestones because he was a preemie). I checked in with his pediatrician and she has assured me there is no reason to be concerned at all. He may crawl a little later...he may just skip it and go right to walking. Also, she might not ever really "crawl" but just do what I call the "vietnam crawl"....dragging herself by her elbows but never really lifting up her behind or getting up on her knees. My oldest did the vietnam crawl FOREVER before finally picking up his little behind and getting on all fours. And he was STILL REALLY FAST at the vietnam crawl.

My son skipped crawling and started walking at 7 months. He is a personal fitness trainer, so I guess it didn't hurt anything.

My youngest DD was very much the same. On track developmentally for everything else, but did not want to crawl. She had some growth issues, so that may have also lent to her lack of crawling, but none the less, she just didn't. We let it go for awhile, but when it became apparent she was truly "falling behind" we began to encourage her more - more tummy time, putting toys a little out of reach, lying on the floor facing her so maybe she would try to get to us, etc. She never did actually crawl. She eventually developed this adorable "butt scoot" to get where she wanted to go (because she liked to sit much more than be on her tummy. In fact, when we put her on her tummy she would almost immediately pull herself into a sit.) She also walked later than any of my others. I am happy to say, though, that today she is a happy, healthy, very on track 2 year old!

So, basically, I would encourage the crawling as much as you can, but, unless your Dr. things there is something wrong medically (ie: low muscle tone) I also wouldn't stress over it too terribly much.

My daughter didn't crawl until 9mos old and even after that she never crawled much. She was just really content to be wherever she was and saw no reason to go anywhere else, I guess. She started walking 5mos later at 14 mos which I think is a little late, but she walked perfectly. She never went through that try to toddle, fall down, try again phase. She just stood up one day and started walking perfectly fine and never fell down or anything. Kids all go through these phases at different times and in different ways and you really can't compare them... just write them down in the baby book so you can remember and try to snap a picture. I love the picture of my kid when she took her first few steps. It's my favorite.

Don't let her skip crawling! Tummy crawling first and then knee crawling is very important to coordination and brian development. Please take her to see an OT. Regular doctors don't get the importance of this skill. I have a six year old that has been in OT for 2 years now because she did not crawl, she rolled. Your DD is probably like mine, very smart and beautiful. But, don't let this stop your from getting her early intervention. This isn't meant to scare you, just to let you know that it is very important to crawl, especially before walking. You must be a very caring and observant mother if you are looking for answers now. Take care!

My little guy (#2, 11 mo.) just started crawling at 9 months. He was slow to roll over, sit up, etc. I assume it's because we protected him from big brother (2.5 yrs), and big brother got everything for him. Now, there's no stopping him! I wouldn't be surprised if he starts walking at a younger age than our first. I wouldn't worry. All kids develop on their own schedules. :)
