7 Year Old Drooling

Every year, as soon as the weather gets cold, my son has trouble controlling his spit and his chin gets really chapped. When he was 4, it was very noticeable and his teacher even commented that he drooled on the toys. He has a long history of speech articulation issues so his speech therapists at the time did exercises with him to strengthen his mouth muscles. Then spring came and it seemed to stop. Every year we seem to go through this, some years worse than others. At this point you can see the spit on his chin if you look hard enough but it doesnt drip all over anymore, but his chin is very sore.

Now he only receives speech through the school system. At the advice of his ENT, I asked the school therapist to do some exercises with breathing through his nose (he is a constant mouth breather), and mouth exercises for the drool. I was met with resistance because those services are "not educational in nature." Does anyone have any idea why this seems to be a winter issue and how to stop it? The ent and ped didn't seem to have any ideas.

What can I do next?

My guess is the nose, but the ENT should be able to recognize a problem. I suggest you get a second opinion from another ENT.

My daughter had nasal polyps and her nose was always plugged and the nose would run without the ability to sniff, so she often had a runny nose. She didn't have any issues with drooling, but I can imagine if your nose is plugged, you breath through your math and as saliva builds, either he swallows or spills. It may not be comfortable to swallow if he is congested.

Try taking a look in his mouth and see if his tonsils are swollen. Shine a flash light up his nose and see if you can see anything going on in there. My strongest suggest is the second opinion.

Could his nose be stopped up by allergies during the winter? My oldest stops up in the winter because of dryness of heated air and probably something in the vents.

You need to force the issue with the school. They will always balk at services the first time. You are his advocate. Keep pushing.

I don't know why it is happening, but I recommend putting Vaseline on his chin in the morning to keep it from getting chapped. Send a small tube with him so he can reapply throughout the day.

Your dentist may be able to help you find the right person -good luck-fixing this is more critical than you think-it is most definitely necessary for education (don't know what clown told you otherwise) and I would get another pediatrician and ENT because they are obviously daft.
