Hi Moms,

My daughter is 6 months old now. I am afraid of water and I wish she would grow up loving water instead. So I am thinking of starting her with swimming lessons.

My questions are :
1. Is it too early to start?
2. I don't own a home. I live in an apartment with a private open-air(does not protect against the sun) pool. Do you think this would be better than going to the swimming schools?
3. Do you know of any good schools/coaches in San Jose area?
4. How do private swim classes/coaches work?
5. What accessories would I need to keep her safe in the water?

Any other suggestions and recommendations will be really helpful.

Thanks a lot.

What can I do next?

Shes 6 months! My kids play in the water and have fun 9 months and 21 months. However, I dont think she needs a swim coach at this age. I use a life jacket for my oldest and hold my youngest. my oldest also has all types of stuff to play with and they also have little seat like things for kids.

Go to www.infantswim.com, there is a place on the website where you can enter your zip to find an instructor near you.

My children started with Water Babies in Campbell very early... My oldest was 6 months old when she started... the 2nd was 8 weeks ;) Yes, I have competitive swimmers in my life now! The one thing you need to remember is that there is NO accessory that will keep your little one safe in the water, but mom's or another adults hands should be on them at all times. My 3 older girls all lifeguard and teach lessons now and they say that any "helper" item, is just a supplement to mom/dad in the water and in constant physical contact with baby!
We did not do "official" lessons with the younger 2, but both were in the pool by 3 months of age and and all 4 of mine have been on competitive swim teams since age 3.5 (no, I did NOT push this, it was a very mutual and child-led decision).

Getting my babies in the water young never failed me.
They love the water. They're little fish.
The good thing about starting early is that they instinctively will hold their breath under water and know what to do.
I taught my kids in the water from the time they were infants, but swim classes might be fun too. They teach them to blow bubbles and bob and turn on their backs to float.
I started my kids out with no water wings or jackets...I just held them and had them paddle along behind me while I held their arms. Or, I held their middles and had them kick and splash and move their arms. I held them up to let them float.
I think little ones learning water safety early gives them a really good way to not be afraid and have a safe love for the water.

I hope you get some great suggestions and find some good places in your area. If you are too nervous to teach them, let someone else help you.

Best wishes!

Hi, My son is 3.5 years old and he loves the water. Although we have a pool at home, we still did Baby Swim Classes which basically means that one parent goes in the water with the baby and stays with the baby at all times. Considering that you are afraid of water, I would suggest such a class to you as the swim teacher will basically show you, what you can do with your baby in the water, so they can enjoy it rather than being afraid.
We are living in Fremont and we signed up for swimming through a community program. I am almost certain that this would exist in San Jose as well. I would start with San Jose City web page.
Take care and good luck,
C.

I enjoyed the couple of times my daughter and I went to Abilities United warm water swim classes in Mountain View. 6 months was the youngest you could bring. It was a fun group session (range of ages of little ones, parents present and hollding babies). Swimsuit over swim diaper over regular diaper was required. The instructor said that she did not recommend any special equipment as things that artificially keep a little one afloat can neutralize some of the cautiousness children and caregivers should have around the water. The class was about enjoying the water and practicing different movements and skills related to swimming - not so much by the book swim lessons. Check it out, you can just drop in.
