hi - i recently found out i'm pregnant. we went to the dr today, since i wasn't sure how far along i am they did an ultrasound. they said i'm about 6 weeks pregnant but the sac was empty. my dr assured me not to worry that it is just early, every pregnancy develops different , etc - she said not to worry and it is too early to worry. so what i am doing? worrying! lol - my 1st pregnancy i saw the baby at 7 weeks. has anyone ever had this happen? i am going back next thursday for another ultrasound. she said we should see some development. i guess if there is no progress...that would be cause for alarm :-( please send me positive vibes!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you ladies. Now I'm wondering if only going back 1 week later will still be too soon to see anything. Keep me in your prayers :-)

L.,

I'm sorry. I've never experienced this so I don't know what to tell you.

It's possible it's a blighted ovum. But the doctor told you not to worry. I know - easier said than done, right?! So what you need to do is stay positive....stay calm. Go back in two weeks. You will hopefully see a little heart beat.

Good luck!

L. I wish you all the luck in the world for your scan next week.
I had an emergency scan at 3 weeks with my twins and neither sac had a heartbeat which at that time was to be expected. At 6 weeks there was only 1 heartbeat and at 8 weeks 2 heartbeats! So your doctor is right in that in just a few days there can indeed be real progress.
I hope this helps.x

My OB doesn't do u/s's until at least the 8th week. Maybe this is why. When I had my u/s with my first I remember hearing something about the yolk sack and that you can't always detect a heartbeat even at 8 weeks.

At this point you have to trust your doctor. Worrying does no good and can only lead to stress. Take a deep breath. I'm afraid you're just going to have to be patient.

I am sorry to hear this, and pray that you have good news at the next appointment, but it does happen (blighted ovum). If that is sadly the case, it does not mean that a subsequent pregnancy would be affected.

I had this at about 6 weeks and it was called a "blighted ovum". There was no embryo, just a sac. I'm sorry if that is what is happening, but I would hold out hope if your doctor says there is still hope. It does seem strange to me, though.

Sending positive vibes your way!!!!

With my first son, I also was not sure about the date of my last period and had guestimated 6 weeks... same thing, the doctor saw the sac but nothing inside and prepared me that it could be a "blighted ovum". She scheduled me to come back 10 days later to check again. Longest 10 days of my life but when I went back everything was fine!! He is 5 now :) I hope that this will be the case for you as well.

They do those ultrasounds too early! I know you said you weren't sure how far along you were though. Do you know the date of your last period, or do you have irregular periods? When the ultrasound is done early, it's hard to see anything.

Sending you lots of positive vibes!

Dear L.,

I had the same thing happen in 2005. Was so excited to be pregnant - per the pee stick, had no idea how far along I was as I am super irregular, only saw a sac at first ultrasound. I went out to my car and cried in the parking lot. The doctor said had me wait two weeks and then did another ultrasound. We had a heartbeat at that one. My son is almost 8 now! He is awesome and there is nothing "wrong" with him. He is a super cute and bright little boy that is a joy to all of us.

Say some prayers if that helps you and keep in mind that either the pregnancy will develop or it won't but there is absolutely nothing that you can do about it.

Sending prayers for a healthy baby and mama and positive vibes for health. C.
