I'm now 6 mths pregnant and have been thinking I needed a massage but as of this morning I'm wandering if I need to go to a Chiropractor. I have the usual tight shoulders and hips that hurt that a massage would work out but my right hip has been in a lot of pain which I was figuring was from a surgery I had when I was 13. I had similar pain with my first son but this was a little different. Last night when I tried to lay on my back it felt like I had a pinched nerve. I started having tingling all through my right butt cheek and the top part of my leg. I laid there for a minute to see if it would stop and when it didn't I rolled over and the tingling stopped. I've never been to a Chiropractor before so a little nervous and not even sure I can being prego. Any advice or suggestions on something I could do at home to fix this and will a massage fix this?

What can I do next?

Hi M.!
I went to chiropracter when i was pregnant. i think that it's healthy to go and also said that if your out of alighnment that it could make your delivery harder, which absolutely makes sense. there are some places that have a machine that will vibrate everything back into place. I have never used that machine i did and still do it the old fashioned way! If you do decide to go to someone that physically does it be sure to relax. if you tense up you won't "pop" as good and could potentially be a lil sore. You will sleep so much better after getting back into alighnment! If you have any questions let me know!

I saw my chiropractor the whole time I was pregnant. Went there more often as the months went by. I HIGHLY recommend it! I had terrible problems with my hips and with pubic synthesis. That's where the pubic bone is shifted during pregnancy. I don't think I could have made it without going. And yes, it was approved and recommended by OB/GYN. Fortunately for me, the chiropractor that I was already a patient of does pregnancy chiropractic work. They need to be specially trained in this kind of work. He is the head chiropractor for the University of Texas Athletes. He also does infant and child work too for after your baby comes if your interested.

I've recommended him on this site many times. His name is Dr. Mike Vandewalle. Not to be confused with his son Alex who works with him. Alex is great but just not at gentle and his dad has many more years of experience which is relaxing. They just sent me some referral cards that allow for a free initial exam and visit. If you would like me to send one to you I can. Just contact me separately and we can work out the details.

Again, I really suggest going to see him. But who ever you see, make sure that they have a specialty in pregnancy chiropractic. It's very different from the regular type of adjustments. That's why I like Dr. Mike. I trusted him before I got pregnant and I don't think I could have survived my pregnancy without him. If you need more convincing... when his son Alex's, who is also a chiropractor, wife was pregnant, she was adjusted by Dr. Mike. And now he also works on their kids. And my daughter too. Not that children need much "work" done but it did help her torticollis heal faster. That's where she was born compensating for a weak muscle in her neck. Her physical therapist said she's never seen a child overcome it as fast as my daughter did and will be recommending chiropractic for kids in the future.

Now are you convinced? :-) Like I said let me know if you would like me to send the referral card I've got to you. He's always sending stuff like this to his clients for us to give to others.

Good Luck to you with your baby! It does get better!
Smiles,
Jen

Hi M.,
If you have decided to go to a chiropractor I would like to recommend an excellent one. His name is Dr.Paul Calandra and he is great. I believe he has had pregnant patients in the past too. And in addition to that he is great about getting you in as soon as possible. You can check out his website at www.calandrachiro.com Let him know that J. referred you. I hope this helps!

If you lie on your back, your uterus & baby will compress nerves and blood vessels. Your symptom is pretty normal. In fact, it's recommended that you not lay on your back during the 2nd & 3rd trimesters. It will most likely resolve after you're back to normal. The massage might help, but I would save your money on a chiropractor - especially if you've never been. There are good ones for sure, but there are also quacks. Just because you have a back problem does not mean it's a job for a chiropractor. Orthopedists and other doctors solve those problems too and insurance covers their work. I had a "pinched nerve" in my neck and the only one who could fix it was a neurosurgeon (I tried everything). Chiropractors can sometimes alleviate pain & symptoms - but beware of the ones who say they can cure all that ails you.

sounds like this is why you are experiencing those symptoms:
"What positions should I avoid?
Sleeping on your back: This can cause problems with backaches, breathing, digestive system, hemorrhoids, low blood pressure and decrease in circulation to your heart and your baby. This is a result of your abdomen resting on your intestines and major blood vessels (the aorta and vena cava)."
"What are the best sleep positions?
The best sleep position during pregnancy is "SOS" (sleep on side). Even better is to sleep on your left side. Sleeping on your left side will increase the amount of blood and nutrients that reach the placenta and your baby. Keep your legs and knees bent and a pillow between your legs."
here is the link where I got this info: (I was told the same thing by my drs. in both pregnancies)

I think this is a common pregnancy symtom. I believe (you can call your OB) that it is your sciatic nerve. Mine would act up occasioanally and stop me cold in my tracks!!! So, my point is that I dont think a chiropractor will help. For what its worth, mine went away upon delivery of my daughter.
Best bet...call your OB and take his/her advice.

Congrats on the baby!!
Margaret :)
P.S. I always recommend to pregnant friends to "use" your nurse. Sometimes the Dr's are busy and those nurses are fonts of information. They also (if they have scruples) will always find the answer you are seeking and call you back. To me, my nurse was always a good starting point of "come on in" or "its normal, stay home, we'll see ya next visit" LOVE THOSE NURSES!!!
