6 Month Old Daughter Not Eating After Being Sick

My daughter is 6.5 months old and had been on solids for about 3 weeks. She came down with a cold and had fewer bottles during that time and wouldn't eat any solids. I figured that was pretty normal. But now that she has been better for 3 days she has been gagging on any solid food that I give her. She will only take one bite, the start gagging and sticks out her tounge and blows to really let me know how she feels. She is taking enough formula now so I'm sure she'll grow fine, but how long have you had a child not eat?

What can I do next?

Make sure she does not have a sore throst. I foud out recently with my own daughter, that sometimes colds can go into sore throats...that's why mine was refusing to eat.

We went through the same thing. Just keep giving her solids. It's almost like they forget how to eat the solid foods. Once she gets used to it again, she'll be fine.

just let her have the bottle for a few weeks then introduce the food again. She may be thinking thats what made her sick. Try fooling her that it's a new thing. not sure what else to tell you other than she will have it her way and stock up on paper towels, lol good luck.

My son has been sick and going through the same thing. Some days he will eat his food and other days all he wants is a bottle. Don't stress about it. She is fine. She will eat it again just keep trying!

Both of my boys are quite a bit older but I had a thought on this issue that I thought just might provide some help. A few other moms said that they too have had this problem.
You mentioned that your child had been sick but has been feeling better for 3 days. I just wonder if there may not be some mucus still that is draining in the throat or perhaps dry mouth and throat that is throwing off the taste of everything. Also, I would make sure that you feed everything from a plastic spoon for a bit. This may not help but I noticed, after I had braces, that when I get sick if I try to eat with regular silverware it leaves a very metallic taste in my mouth. I don't have braces now but I do still experience that problem. Plastic worked best for me in those situations. I hope this helps some. To be honest, at 6 months old, I wouldn't worry to much if you can't get solids into them. I wasn't one of them but I know that many people keep babies on formula for a full year. My kids would have starved to death with that plan but point is if they can go on liquids for that long, I don't think a few days will hurt your little one. You might try making some cereal very runny and see if it helps. Shannon G. SAHM of 2 boys 9yrs, and 16 mo. with hopes of adding an adopted 8 yr. old boy soon

Just keep trying to give her solids. Eventually she will get back in the swing of things. Are you still in the one new food every three days stage? Maybe she just doesn't care for what is being given to her? All three of my kids appetites went through an up and down cycle, so after being sick, she might just be in a down time. She will eat eventually, just keep trying!

Good luck!
