My son got his shots on 12/8 and has had diarrhea since shortly after that, At first i thought it was the shots, but he still has it. I talk to the doctor and she says just make sure he isnt dehydrated or gets a high fever! He has been acting totally normal, eating and drinking just fine, not dehydrated, just a couple of low grade fevers (nothing high), anyone have any ideas??? Please help, daycare is getting mad and i cant miss anymore work, i am a single mama so the only income. I think it is teething, anyone know what it could be?

So What Happened?

Thank you all so much for your advice. We are trying soy formula to see if that helps! I have been giving him probiotics, but they didnt seem to work neither did the yogurt, but i gave him bananas tonight so we shall see, he has also had rice cereal every night, i stopped giving him oatmeal thinking that was the cause, but that hasnt seemed to make a difference either. So i am hoping that the Soy formula works... i will keep you posted thank you!

Hi C.,

Have you tried the BRAT diet? Bananas, Rice, Applesauce and Toast. I've 'heard' that this diet is no longer recommended by pediatricians but I've had nothing but success with it. I hope you find something that works well for you!

Best,
T.

My daughter is older than your son - 18 months - but she just went through something very similar. She popped out two molars and the diarrhea was done with. We managed the diarrhea though while it was going pretty simply with yogurt and bananas. We didn't give her too much fiber - no berries, cut down on peas, broccoli, etc.

Your baby is still small and may not eat those things yet. He surely can have banana and if you're timid about yogurt (it truly does help a ton, though) feed him RICE cereal. Don't give him any oatmeal or wheat - it will only add to the diarrhea problem.

I'm sure that it's teething, like you said. As long as the fevers are low grade I think you're ok. Good luck!

I believe I remember my daughter had stool issues around that age too. It usually coincides with starting solids and teething and the teething can absolutely contribute to oose stools. My daycare center never had a problem with it, honestly. My daughter was breastfed and loose stools are normal for breast fed babies - you can only tell that they have diarrhea by the change in color and smell... their illness policy had specific instructions for young babies (they needed to have a fever or act sick to stay home).
Ask them if you can bring in a doctor's note that confirms that your son is fit for daycare, especially if he is otherwise fine.

Since you can't miss a lot of work, you should act fast and find back-up daycare. I think until my daughter was about 18 months, either my husband or I were out about one day a week or so for some sickness (mostly fevers).
They just pick up every germ there is...

Good luck!

Teething can contribute to loose stools, as will a change in diet. It may be a good idea to remove anything from his diet that you've introduced right before and since the diarrhea began. Loose stools can be a sign of intolerance.

Immunizations can depress the immune system, since we are right in the middle of cold and flu season and your son spends time in day care where there may be other kids who are ill it is not surprising that he caught something. I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Go buy some Nancy's Organic plain yogurt. It's full of cultures that are good for the guts, and only costs about $3.50! Whenever my son (or my husband or I, for that matter!) has a gut problem like you're describing, a few spoonfuls of Nancy's a few times a day over a few days usually sets everything right. And if it doesn't, at least you haven't invested a ton, and it's still good for you! If your son doesn't like the taste (it's a little tangy) you can stir in a little jam or something.

Are you nursing? If so, maybe it's something you're eating? I was recently taking antibiotics and only nurse my twins at night, but they still got diarrhea from the antibiotics I was taking! Ugh. They were the same - acting totally normal, etc., except the diarrhea. Also, teething always gave my older son diarrhea, so perhaps you're right on there.

I would add a probiotic to his diet. You can finger feed it in powdered form or add it to his rice cereal if eating solids. I use bifidus or primadophilous, both in powdered form. Our naturopath started my son on bifidus at 2 weeks old. It cleared up his acid reflux very quickly and he has had a much better intestinal health ever since. He is two now and still takes a daily dose of probiotic, as does my 4 year old daughter who was put on bifidus at 1 when her reflux wasn't going away and wasn't helped by prescription meds. Reflux was under control very quickly.

At 6 months I believe my son was taking 1/2 tsp of bifidus. I can't find it in the grocery - only through the naturopath, but can find a powdered primadophilous for children in the organic refrigerated case at Fred Meyer- try your local grocery or a natural food store.

Apple juice and apple sauce dry up diarrhea. You could order Okobuku 12c from a homeopathic pharmacy on line. It also stops diarrhea. However, the greatest likelihood no matter what your doctor said is that your child got a mild case of the disease(s) the shots were supposed to protect him against.
Go out on the Web and see what is written about the vaccines not by big Pharma but by researchers and mothers and ordinary consumers.

Hi C.,
The many stresses of being a mom. I struggle with doctors and how they discount what you know is something that you as a mom should be paying attention to.
Do you believe in chiropractic care? My daughter will be 3 on the 29th. She has been seeing a chiroprator since she was two weeks old. We have seen the doctor mostly at well child checks and if it is visible that she needs a doctors care. (We had the swine flu with bronchitis afterward) Even when sick, we also take her in to see the chiropractor to see if she needs an adjustment. I have to say, she is rarely sick and with the adjustments she snaps back to normal very quickly. My daughter was born with some physical differences from one side of her body to the other. She was stuck inside me and when she came out her legs stuck out straight. She came out basically doing the spilts.
All of these differences no longer exist. Our chiropractor has been able to balance her body and she is a very healthy and active 3 year old.
I wish you many blessings as you decide what works best for your family. Enjoy the holiday season!

Never doubt the power of getting vaccinations. Please look more into vaccination adverse affects because it seems like your little boy is very sensitive to shots. Lots of docs love to tell moms that it wasn't or couldn't be the shot, but do you think that they would say..."yes what I recommended you do, then gave your baby made him sick."? So I would take your boy to a naturopathic doctor instead, my pediatrician is very thorough & very informative about shots. She treated our sons diarhea very well, took her time, & does house calls. ###-###-#### Good luck.
