6 And a Half Weeks Pregnant and Bleeding

I am 6 and a half weeks pregnant and just started bleeding a couple of days ago. It is a significant amount of bleeding, similar to a light period, but no cramping. I had an ultrasound and the baby is fine and everything else looks good. My doctor prescribed progesterone and said to try and take it easy. Easier said than done when I have a three year-old and I am a full-time teacher. Anyway, I have had a history of miscarriages, so I am preparing myself for the worse. I have heard that some women have bled throughout their entire pregnancies and have gone to full-term with healthy babies. I desperately need some hopeful thoughts!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you to everyone who has responded. I had another ultrasound yesterday, and to my surprise, I may have possibly had twins. There is still a vital baby, but possibly another did not make it. Or, it is a slight bleed from implantation. It really seems like a guessing game this early on. Either way, they said that bleeding is normal and to just take it easy, which I am doing, and I will just hope for the best. Thank you again!

I bled right around that time with 2 of my pregnancies. They were both fine. With one I took progesterone and with the other, I had a different doc who wouldnt give it to me. But either way, they both were full term pregnancies. Good luck and congrats!

Hi there!
I know you said you have a history, so it really doesn't hurt to have an extra check on yourself! I have a 5mo old girl at home, and had a similar situation to yours. I had some spotting early in my pregnancy, and went for an ultrasound. She was fine, but I had to take a supplement as well, and I'm almost positive it was a progesterone supplement as well. I had to take that every day for the entire first trimester. I did have a friend that had on and off spotting thru her entire pregnancy and she had a 100% healthy baby boy.
I hope this was somewhat comforting!
I'll be sending many good thoughts your way.
Good luck and congrats on your baby!

I bled for my entire second pregnancy. I only made it to 30 weeks but do now have a healthy 5 year old boy. However, I had many other issues that contributed to the early delivery. I was on bedrest for the first 13 weeks and then again the last 2 before going into preterm labor.

Did the ultrasound show show any indication of why you were bleeding? I had a subchorreonic (sp) hemmorage - basically a bled between the placenta and uterine wall.

I would really try to take it easy and go to the ER if the bleeding ever increases.

My OB said she had a full blown "period" every month for both her healthy pregnancies. It's unsettling, but not uncommon. Having had a couple of miscarriages myself (and also a healthy beautiful girl!), I know how hard it is to relax and hope for the best while simultaneously preparing yourself for the worst. It's all you can think about. I hope you can find a way to be calm and feel secure knowing that if you want to be a parent, you will be, one way or another, this time or another time. Wishing you good luck on your road to parenthood!

This is always tough. With my daughter I did have a bleed at 7 weeks. Bright red blood. She was fine but my progesterone was too low, despite already being on progesterone supplements. They doubled my dose and now I have this gorgeous three year old. I've had two miscarriages, but neither of those invovled bright red bleeding. It was kind of brownish spotting at first. It's good the doc says baby fine. Hearbeat will make you feel better.

Could you take some days off from work? I think if your doctor told you to try and take it easy, it might be worth doing. Maybe a few days is what your body needs along with the progesterone.

I had bleeding in my first pregnancy at around that same time, including cramping. I had an ultrasound and they did bloodwork and everything was fine. It was still extremely upsetting and nervewracking not knowing, but the hormone levels came back normal and it was fine. I was teaching full-time, too, then and we had just moved to a different home, so I had to take it easy for about a week just in case, but I delivered a healthy baby boy just four days early. Hang in there and take it easy a few days.

If I were you...honestly...I'd go to the emergency room! With your history, I really think it's a good idea. If nothing is wrong, no harm done. If something, is a little off you could catch it. Really, better to be safe.
