5Th Graders from 5 schools...need to Learn Math Facts Fast

None of the kids in our tutorial group know their math multiplication facts. They attend five different schools and were all told to learn them.
I bought flash cards from the dollar store. Any ideas, especially for those who feel anxious about math. Would you go back to drawing and using counters at this stage? They are all 10 and only 1 has a disability(dyslexia).

What can I do next?

For multiplication,

get the CD "Phil Snyder, the numbears multiply"

These are songs that really work with memorization. My dd learned multiplication without even trying. We played the cd in the car an it worked. No fussing either.

It's sad that schools don't do this isn't it?

It's on itunes too.

Hi! You don't say where you are starting--- adding or division or fractions---
But if you are looking for basics look for Math Rescue at Redwood Games. My kids used to play for hours. It begins with simple addition and works up. I don't know how far it goes today but I recall multiplication and division.
BTW, their Word Rescue is great too!!
Doing math with M&M's is always fun. They can add, subtract, multiply, divide then eat. Playing poker is good for addition.

Go to Mathwire.com (link below). They have lots of good ideas to learn multiplication. You may want to have them go to multiplication.com for fun games- coolmathforkids.com is another good one.

Definetly explain multiplication to them so they understand the concept of repeated addition. Show them the patterns of math.

Good luck!

Flash cards are good, counters work well for some learning styles.

I found that using skittles and money for math manipulatives kept my kids' attention the best.

good suggestions so far.

I know there are some story books out there that actually work math facts into it. one i'm thinking of is about a family of rabbits lol.
So googling stories about mulitplication might give you some ideas you can check out from the library.

montessori kindergarten classrooms spend alot of time counting strings of sets of beads, so like five has five sets of five pink beads strung together, and kids learn really concretely how to skip count by 5s which then helps with addition and mulitplication.

and yes, i do think i would go back to counters.

oh but assess first if there are any they already just know, don't spend time learning to multiply by 2 if they already know them,
1, 10s, 5,s 2s are pretty easy

How about a CD? That's how I taught my sons during the summers before 3rd grade.

Look at Amazon.com and try Schoolhouse Rock for Multiplication Tables. It's not the same one I used, but I can't remember the name of it. I'm sure School House Rock will work fine.

Use something like M&Ms, Cheerios, plastic blocks. Having something physically in front of them will help them learn groupings, add, subtract, multiply.

Hi Jenna, thanks for asking such a great question, you inspired me to blog about it! http://heyyougetreal.com/momblog/multiplication-tables-ho...

Teach the basics then memorization is the ONLY way.
Games to play with the flash cards:

Around the world - they all stand in a circle and one person starts. You hold up a fact and the firs tone who gets it right moves to the person on the right. Then the next fact, each time 2 people competing. First one "around the World" or back to their place earns a sticker.

Beat the commercial. They MUST watch TV for an hour. Put the flascards on the TV and anytime there is a break in the show (credits, commercials etc) they jump up and see how many facts they can get right. They lift a card if they get it right it goes in the right pile. If they get it wrong in goes on the left. once the show starts they sit back down. (they mind will be processing all the while the "mindless" show is on tv. Next commercial same thing. The object is to "beat the commercial" getting all facts in the right pile.

And one more in my blog!

Have fun!
