5 Year Old Sleeping Problem

My daughter is 5 y.o. in Pre-K. The teacher tells me she is sleeping in class. They have a "relax" time for 30 min when they can put their heads on the table and take a power nap I suppose. Well my midget likes to fall into a deep sleep. When she gets woken up to do an activity she just finds another area in the classroom to catch a few zzzs. Her doctor check up isn't for another month. She gets 9-10 hours of sleep a night (I wish I got at least 6). She wakes up rather chipper. Teacher tells me about her sleeping in class like it's a medical problem. Does this sound weird, normal to anyone? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello J.,

I don't think there is anything wrong with you daughter. Maybe her iron is low that's all because than you are sleepy... or she just growing. Let me know what the doctor said. Every kid is different.
Good luck to you,
Orsi

Here's my opinion. What time do they "rest"? I thought even in full day kindergarten here in FL that they rest for 45 minutes? Some kids still need a nap at that age. That's why I think it's weird they go full days all over here.

I personally don't think there is anything wrong with her. Sounds like she just likes to sleep! I know it's a problem when they get to school and whatnot, so you'll probably just have to talk to her about it, and also talk with the teacher to try and do something about it, but it sure doesn't sound like she has any medical problems! My son is the same way, if he takes a nap during the day, he will sleep for like 3 hours and nothing will wake him up! But he still sleeps 9-11 hours a night!

My little guy will be 5 in November. He also attends a Pre-school, but one where they take an afternoon nap after lunch. He's such a great napper that he often gets 3 hours of zzz's in during naptime! He also gets 9 hours of sleep at night and is very energetic all day. I've never had anyone tell me this was odd.

On the otherhand, when my daughter was little she would never nap at all and it drove her pre-school crazy.

I think some kids just need an afternoon nap and some don't. But napping is normal for little people, so I wouldn't worry about your daughter. Maybe you could ask them if they have a quiet place where she can sleep for an hour or so in the afternoon.

My Antonio use to do the exact same thing. We found out that his iron count was low. Also make sure they check her heart.Make sure she gets blood work done. Until she goes to the doctor you might want to try and get her to eat green veggies and grapes.

Hi J.,

I'm not at all a doctor but there may be a possibility that she is low on iron. i wouldnt worry too much about it though things could be worse. she could be too active and have adhd. my daughter is the complete opposite she cant sit still and has troubles staying focused on one thing for more than a few mins at a time.. so dont worry im sure shes fine if there is anything " medically wrong " with her your doctor will know. you might suggest that her teacher (instead of getting her to put her head on the desk and take a power nap) have her sit quietly and read a book instead. anyways.. good luck :)

I'm not a doctor, but it doesn't sound like a medical problem to me. Not to sound harsh but the "power nap" you described to me sounds really lame. I've had 3 children go through preschool so far and they have always had nap time where they lay down on a cot with a blanket and actually sleep. In fact, I had to complain to the school not to let my 5 year old daughter sleep more than 2 hours because she wouldn't go to bed at bedtime.

Surely discuss this with your child's pediatrician. But I think finding a new Pre-K program might be in order. My daughter is 5, almost 6 now and when she gets home from Kindergarten, where she doesn't have naps, she is tired. The only thing that keeps her going is her siblings and her dance class on Thursdays which is 2 hours long. But she sure goes to bed right at 8pm now and sleeps until 6:30-7am. (I wake her up last)

Your daughter could also be getting ready for or going through a growth spurt. I'm rambling. I have a tendancy to do that, sorry. I hope you find a way to resolve this issue. But in my opinion, as a mom of 5, I don't see anything odd about her still being tired after their 30min power nap. It doesn't sound very comfortable either.

I wonder, could she be going through a growth spurt? My daughter didn't have this situation but when she was five she started wetting her bed at night and we were worried was there somehing going on at school or some kind of stress she was having. It turns out she grew 7 inches that year and her body just went into an incredibly deep sleep-I believe that that was the reason. She had been dry at night for at least 2 1/2 years so we were mystified. Hind sight for us on this one.

Since this is preK hopefully her program can work with her on this. As long as nothing is medically wrong this should work it's way out. Maybe the preK program could try and allow for a longer nap on certain days like MWF and then switch it to TU/Thurs. That's kind of how I weaned my kids from naps. Good Luck, LaurieK
