Hi moms. I have a girlfriend who told me today that her little 4YO has a bump on her breast she found last night. I thought I would ask if anyone has had this problem with their little girl? She's kinda freaked out and worried. She has a Dr. appt tomorrow morning but I thought I would ask you all if anyone else has experienced this to see if I can put her mind to ease. Her daughter says it hurts to touch and it's a hard bump right on the areola. Thanks moms!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Well, the doctor appt. was this morning and can you believe the Dr. said she has "percossious puberty". The dr. said the lump under the skin is breast tissue and she's going through puberty. I will be posting another question about this right now to see if I can get my friend some support with this. Her and I both are freaking out a little. More of just like "why is this happening to a 4 yr old baby". The Dr. said they will do lots of tests on her hormone levels and she may need to have hormone injection therapy to stop the puberty process. Wish her luck!

if it is hard and not painless its probably a cyst. if its a cyst it could go away on its own or if it gets bigger they may have to remove it. i hope everything checks out ok for her!

Hi Michelle,

There's a lot of information missing here -- How big is the bump? Is it on the skin or beneath the surface? How deep does it seem to be? Is it red, hot, or itchy? Does it blanche (turn white) if pressed? Are there any other symptoms, such as fever, malaise, behavioral, etc.?

Actually, it's best to let the Dr. sort this out, since he/she will be able to examine it first hand and get a full history. A bump can be many things, ranging from a reaction to a bug bite, a localized infection, a pimple or boil, a cyst, a solid tumor (benign or otherwise -- highly unlikely!), to even precocious puberty (again, highly unlikely!).

Until your friend can see the doctor, she can try cold compresses to see if the swelling goes down and tylenol for pain (if it's really bad). If cold compresses are not effective, she can try hot compresses (could be a localized cellulitis).

I know it's hard, but your friend should try not to panic and think horses, not zebras! We had a pretty good scare last month when an MRI to diagnose a back injury in our 14 yr old turned up a large ovarian cyst with a solid mass in it. By the time we got the report and had a follow up ultrasound, and saw the gynecologist, it had pretty much disappeared and was resolving on its own. It had to be about the worst 48 hours I ever had, though, until we got the correct tests and diagnosis! (And how happy am I to have my 14 yr old taking BC pills as therapy for it?! ;-) )

Good luck to your friend and her daughter. I hope everything turns out to be OK.

R.

Precocious puberty is not that uncommon. I would get a second opinion ,however.
Usually girls with precocious puberty are overweight . There needs to be sufficient fat in the body for puberty to begin. I would suggest making sure she gets plenty of exercise and eats a healthy diet , maybe even see a dietitian. Also Milk is full of growth hormones , I would suggest switching to Organic milk.

Will you please keep us updated? I have never heard of anything like this at that age, and would appreciate knowing what the doctor says.
