4 Year Old with Loose Tooth

I wouldn't worry about it unless she hit something to make it loose. My daughter had lost 4 teeth by the time she was 5 years old and all of her adult teeth came in just fine! I spoke with the dentist and he said that the earlier they get teeth, the earlier the baby teeth will fall out. My daugther started teething at 4 months and by 8 months had 8 teeth, so don't worry!

Not to worry! Happened to my daughter at same age, took her to dentist. All is well. The only concern with loosing teeth this early is the pattern it follows. As long as she is losing them the same way she got them (i.e. first one in, first one out, etc.) I was told not to worry. And yes, within days, the "grown up tooth" was making its way in. By the time she was 5 she lost 2 teeth and they have since grown in perfectly fine.

Was she an early teether? My daughter didn't get a tooth until 13 months and didn't lose one until she was a 7 year old second grader. I researched and found out that both extremes are normal. 4 1/2 is not unheard of, especially if she got her first teeth before 6 months.

Hi S.--My son is 4-1/2 and hasn't lost any teeth, but lots of the 4- to 5-year-old kids in his preschool have already lost their bottom 2 teeth. Every child is different; I think your daughter is right on track! Try not to worry! :)

if you're really that worried about it take him to a pediatric dentist to put your mind at ease, but I agree with your doctor, it's normal. and if the tooth behind it isn't ready to come out yet, he'll be toothless for a bit longer than usual. but I would take him to a ped's dentist.

seriously, I know your mom and sister are trying to help....but they need to chill. Your Dr is right, it's normal if you can call anything kids do normal...there is a whole big spectrum out there....some kids walk @7 months when other just as healthy babies aren't even sitting up yet...from my own expirence thus far my 2 oldest boys lost their first 2 teeth at 5 in kindergarden, my third son was 4 in prek when he lost his first, my fourth son is older than all of the others were and still doesn't have a loose tooth yet...my best friend's son was in second grade before he lost one and my other best friend's daughter lost 3 in prek...your daughter is fine!! I've heard that the earlier a child gets teeth the sooner they loose them and that it also follow's parent pattern's(if you or her dad lost teeth early...)but to be honest...my son that got his teeth the latest lost his first so who knows!! :) RELAX and enjoy this next new stage...the toothfairy!! and FYI, the new adult teeth that will come in, don't be surprised if they are more yellow...they have a stronger coating and next to bright white baby teeth they look dirty...all normal...my dentist said that healthier teeth are usually a darker color...don't tell that to all those bleaching junkies :) good luck!!

My now 10 year old lost her first 2 teeth in pre-school, so she was either 4 or just turned 5. She got her first 2 teeth when hse was 4 months old (which is early) and lost them early. All of her teeth came in fine.

Don't listen to your family. Totally normal. My son lost his first tooth at 5. Right after the first one till he turned 6 another five came out. I had seen a dentsit when he was about five because he hadn't lost any teeth and she said completly normal, each child is different. I'm sure your daughter will love it when the tooth fairy arrives. my daughter is in kindergarten and there are a few 5 year olds with missing teeth. My daughter turned 6 two days ago and she's had 2 loose teeth for 5 months already and they still aren't falling out. So it may still be a while until the tooth falls out. Did your daughter's baby teeth come in early? If so, they usually will fall out earlier...

She should see a dentist who can verify a permanent tooth is above or below the loose one. She may need extra flouride to ensure her teeth are not soft as a result of early change over, but if she has not had any trauma to loosen the tooth, she should be fine.

My first child got his first two adult teeth at 4 years old. There was no problem and he has terrific teeth. If your doctor or dentist says it's fine, relax!

it's regarding a tooth, tight? call a pediatric dentist and stop listening to what other laymen are saying.

S., your daughter is 4 1/2. It could take months for the tooth to come out. Most kids lose their first tooth at 5 or 6 years old, she will likely be a few months away from 5. Why do you think something could be wrong? It would be different if she was a toddler, but she's not. I don't know where your mother or sister in law or aunt are getting their information from, but they are panicking you for no reason. Why should you hope there's not a tooth behind it? That is normal and what's supposed to happen, the tooth gets pushed out by the adult tooth, this is normal development!
Has your daughter been to a dentist yet? By this age, she should have gone. If your own doctor's reassurance wasn't enough for you, take her to see the dentist. I can't imagine why your family is trying to create a problem that doesn't exist ... sure, she's a little early for loose teeth, but not extremely early.
There is nothing wrong that would make a 4 1/2 year old have a loose tooth. Even if she had an accident that knocked the tooth loose prematurely, it would simply fall out and eventually the adult tooth would grow in. If there was something wrong with her tooth, it would decay or turn colors, and still, if it's a baby tooth, it wouldn't matter all that much, eventually the tooth would fall out and the adult tooth would grow in.

Hi - my son cut his first 2 teeth at just 4 MONTHS old and I asked the doctors and the dentist if this meant he'd lose teeth early - they said not really, but he did. He lost his first 2 teeth on the bottom one right after the other not too long after he turned 4 also. I was assured by the dentist that this is fine. It took a little while for his new teeth to appear.

Also as a side note (he's going to be 7 soon) while playing around a bit rough with a family member, they helped "knock out" his already loose front tooth (but it was nowhere near ready to come out on it's own yet) and it took months for the one to show up - but rest assured it did.

I've also had a friend of ours who's son at the age of 3 fell and knocked out all 4 of his bottom teeth and there were no problems when his new teeth came in. They left the space open the entire time.

If your dr & the nurse all said it was fine - then I'd believe that it is. Hope she has fun with the tooth fairy! That's the part that's really fun!

I agree that there is nothing wrong. Children get their first teeth, and lose their teeth, at different times. I assume that your daughter got her teeth early, and so her secondary teeth are ready to come forth, also at an early age. Count yourself blessed.
My daughter lost her teeth early, and the growth of her jaw was able to keep up with the on-coming teeth. My son, however, was late in his development and we ended up having teethe extracted. So count yourself lucky, W.

Hi S... I'm not sure what you're nervous about?? Little kids lose their baby teeth; it's a natural process.. I think she may be a tad early, but lots of kis lose their teeth beginning at age 4, so I do not see the need to worry.. As long as she is brushing, and the dentist says she is fine, tell your mom and aunt to stop worrying you!! :) enjoy the experience!!

I wouldn't worry. My daughter started losing her baby teeth when she was five. She was the first I knew of in her peers who started this soon. She also is one of the tallest and seems to grow first in every other way physically too.
My daughter lost the tooth next to the front ones on the bottom and didn't get a permanent one until almsot two years later!

My daughter won't be fine for another couple of months and she just lost her first tooth! She already has a new one coming in. My doctor wasn't concerned about it either. Like everything else that happens to kids as they grow u - it all happens at different times for different kids!

S. — Don't worry about this. My son had 2 loose teeth when he was 4+. And I took him to the dentist and they said it's fine. It's not too early (just earlier than most). He lost them both before turning 5. He's now almost 5 1/2 and they're both in (not quite fully - as his mouth is small, but getting there). He hasn't had any other loose teeth yet, but he does have 2 new teeth. He also got his teeth early. He cut the same two teeth just before 5 months (which is also early) and had all his teeth in by 10 months. It's just the way he is. And it's just the way your daughter is. There's nothing wrong with her now and there won't be anything wrong with her or these teeth in the future. Worst case for us is our son will need braces. He's small for his age and has a small mouth for now, so he'll probably need braces, but most kids do anyway. And remember, even if there wasn't a tooth behind it yet, there will be. Don't worry about your mother and sister-in-law. Your doctor and dentist are right. She'll be fine.

Don't worry its normal. My little girl was 4 1/2 when she lost her first tooth. Now she is six and just lost her fifth tooth. She will be fine. Her teeth came in just fine. But i also have to tell you it felt like forever waiting for it to grow in. But it did. Everything will be fine. Keep me updated. Make sure you take pictures of her with her frist tooth missing.

My son got his first tooth at 4 months. He also lost his first tooth at around 4 years old. Yes, it is early compared to most kids but remember all kids hit these different milestones at different times. He did have a tooth come in after it fell out. I would listen to your dr. You could also look up a pediatric dentist if you are still worried and let them examine your daughter.

My son lost his first tooth at 4 and a half and I freaked out too. I asked this group... googled... called the dentist... I was nervous as well. There is nothing to worry about, some kids just start losing their teeth earlier than others. If you're really concerned you can take her to the dentist and have it checked out, but it is very unlikely you have anything to worry about :)

S., don't worry. My daughter lost between 6 and 8 teeth from age 4 to 5! We had a blast with it. It is an exciting time in a childs life...the tooth fairy and money...they think they are hot stuff! There were teeth behind her baby teeth...that's what was pushing the baby teeth out. She is now 15, with a gorgeous set of pearly whites.

If the pediatrician and dentist say it's fine, then relax. Let her body do what it needs to do.

First teeth just don't fall out. And if the tooth that is falling out is white like a normal tooth it is a heathly live tooth. If the tooth has turned black and is falling out, that means the root is dead and there is a problem. So if the tooth is a normal white tooth, then she just happens to be losing her teeth early. If your really that worried take her to a pediatric dentist, or even call one.

If I were you, I wouldn't worry. My son got his first teeth at 4 months and by 12 months he ad all 16. I swear he could have eaten a steak at his first birthday. Therefore I fully expect him to lose them early too. Also ask yourself, what do you think is actually wrong? If she loses the tooth and a new one comes in right after it, and even if it is happening really early, what is the problem? Are you concerned that there will be no teeth behind it or that she has gum problems that are causing her to lose the tooth?
If you continue to feel stressed, take her to a dentist. I am sure a dentist could tell you if there she had gum problems.

Please do not let family worry you, you are a good mother and have great instinct, besides your doctors are telling you everything is fine, so please relax.

Also My son lost his teeth at the same age, he started to teeth at 3 months so it was expected. The tooth will not loosen with out a tooth pushing it out. I know this because my husband still has 6 baby teeth in his mouth right now because he is missing the adult teeth. Some heve needed to be pulled and replaced with artifical, but they did not come out on there own. Nature is taking it's course.

Take care, and keep up the good work, remind your family every child is different and grow and develope at different rates,, as long as his doctor is comforatable with what is going on so are you.
