4 Year Old with 105.7+ Temp That Won't Stay down...been Since 6/28/09 - Tacoma,WA

Take her to a doctor (a different one than the one you talked to, if necessary). She could have something she needs meds for (strep throat). Also.....when my son had a fever that high, he had pneumonia. This doesn't sound like one I would wait out. When my boys have high fevers, I alternate ibuprofin and tylenol. Sometimes, they respond better to the ibuprofin. Hope this helps! S.

I would ignore my doctor and take her immediately to the Emergency Room. High fevers are nothing to mess with and if she is feeling and acting funny the temp is affecting her brain. I hope she gets the care she needs and I'd question the doctors attitude.

This may sound harsh, but I say it's time for a new doctor.

A fever of 106 is a major cause for concern, especially since your daughter complained about not being able to walk. This isn't anything to mess with. I don't want to scare you, because it could be nothing, but fevers like this can be quite serious.

If you feel your daughter needs to be seen (and I think she does), then she needs to be seen. Don't wait. I see you live in Tacoma, which means you are near Mary Bridge Children's Hospital. Take your daughter to the ER there to be evaluated. If you don't have insurance, it's ok, because they will still treat you, regardless of ability to pay.

There are others who may tell you that fevers are the body's way of healing itself, which may be the case, but with such a high fever combined with jerky movements and the complaint of not being able to walk, it's best to be safe than sorry.

Please let us know what happens.

Responding to meds is a good thing. My worry is about her jerking...possible febrile seizure?? Usually brought on by high fevers and needs attention. Most doctors realize that moms over react a lot of the time over little things but somethings we are right and the child does need more attention and to get checked out. I would personally take her in to at least Urgent care because of her inability to walk and fever combined. But that is just me.

I would call the doctor and take her in. If he will not see her then I would find a new doctor. You are the mom and you get to say if she should see the doctor. If it is nothing then your co-pay is a small price to pay for peace of mind. I also agree that her not being able to walk is something that you should be concerned with. I hope your little one gets better soon and please don't take no for an answer.

Find another doc! If yours won't see a kid that's had a high fever for a few days, find one who will! yeah, I know it's hard to find one, esp. on short notice - but many doc's offices will move a new patient to the front of the line if there's a sick kid involved. You could also try an Urgent Care. If you have health insurance, a lot of companies have a nurse phone line you can call for advice - wait, here, Seattle Children's has a free children's health resource line: 866-987-2500 . It doesn't matter if you use their care or not!
Good luck to you and your ailing sweetie - and after this blows over, I would switch doctors anyway - what good are they if they won't see a sick kid?

I think the fact that the fever is responding to meds is a good indicator. If your mama instinct is telling you something is wrong, take her in. I sure would. If nothing else you will have peace of mind that she has seen a doctor.

I wouldn't be calling the dr office anymore, I'd be going to the dr's office now. This high of a temp that won't drop below 101 is not a good thing. The high temps of 105+ are signs of something seriously wrong. If they won't see you, then go to the nearest emergency room and ask to be seen. (I hope you have insurance!!!) Your daughter could suffer from febrile seizures due to the high fevers and you don't know what infection she is fighting to cause the temp yet. Go, now and see the doctor and ask to be put in a segregated waiting area as you don't know if she's contagious with who only knows what.

Omg! Your doctor is completely unprofessional. Please take your child into the ER right away. All the books I've read and my own pediatrician's literature states to bring child in if fever is 104 or above because it is VERY serious. Sounds also like she had a febrile seizure. Her temperature is too high. She needs to be seen and I would get a new doctor.

106 and your doctor said not to come in...sounds strange to me! I would be there - or at urgent care...watch for dehydration!

I pray you have already taken your child to an ER --- the doctor is being way too casual --- temperatures this high can do damage- PLEASE don't wait --- an ER doctor will be more aggressive and put a stop to this process - and then ( just my opinion) -- you need to look for a more assertive doctor --- hearing loss--- seizures--- brain damage -- all might be the outcome of waiting for her to have a dangerously high fever '''''''' long ''''''' enough- . You sent this message 3 days after this bout started --- I'd have taken her to an ER after 24 hours of this process ( and I know I am more of a worry-wart than some- but have worked with special ed' kids for 40 years--- the duration of this illness and the height of the fever are TOO MUCH)

I agree with posters, that fever is what my emergency room nurse aunt used to call "brain damage high". Maybe the person answering health questions is just misinformed, or maybe the dr really is horribly negligent. Whatever the case get your baby to the er as soon as is possible and when you get a chance please post the dr's name, location, and pediatric group name (if there is one) so we can sall be better aware. I think if your daughter is not acting normal and the fever is that high, take her to urgent care and don't worry about what the doctor is saying. Go with you gut. I think anything over 104 is worthy of a doctor visit, 1 day or 3 days....

Get to the hospital! When my son, now 32, was 5 I had a similar situation. His temp would sky-rocket to over 105 every evening. I took him every night to the emergency room but the cool night air would have brought down the temp and they would send me home. I called his Dr. who was angry that the er and never done xrays. Turned out my son had pneumonia!

Go to the ER and don't stop going until they find out what is wrong! Good luck & I'll be praying...

You've gotten plenty of responses, but I just wanted to add one more voice to the chorus - TAKE HER TO ER AND GET A NEW DR! I used to do pediatric triage and advice (the person you call at your dr's office when this is going on) and our standard was greater than 104 take to ER, prolonged for more than 2 days at less that 104, bring in to office. Sounds like your dr's office is lazy and dismissive!

Take your daughter to the emergency room right away!! A fever of over 103 is cause for you to go to the doctor.. I'm appalled that your doctor would tell you that 105.9 is not high enough to come in, he should be sued and with it continuing to rise.106.1. A fever this high can cause seizures in kids.. Im hoping you have already done this but if not, go now to the emergency room!!! I'm sorry to alarm you but can't believe a doctor would tell you not to come in! Please rush to the ER if you're reading this tonight!

I just raed your request & became very upset & had to log in to respond. Thankfully, I see that so far 52 other moms have responded already!! So, I can't read all 52 right now...but, I assume they say the same thing...go to the ER...that is way too high...my son had seizures when he had temp.s that high...it is very SCARY to see your child experience that!! Also, brain damage can occur if it stays up there too long! I am hoping she doesn't have anything too major wrong...I am guessing strep throat?? Next, I can NOT believe the treatment you are receiving...I mean, NOT receiving!!! I would NEVER go back to that doctor!!! A high fever means the body is fighting off something...strep, ear infection, etc. but...why would a doctor just tell you to wait & see...unless the temp. was 99-100!! Ahhh. this makes me so mad! I truly hope your little one gets better soon & that you find a new, great, CARING Ped. for her!!!

Take her to the ER not Urgent Care. We've been told that repeatedly by our pediatricians. Always ER never Urgent care. Do it now. That is not normal!

Sounds like you're doing all the right things. As long as she's not chilled, keep her in just underpants. Continue meds (Motrin or Tylenol only, unless her other symptoms are making her miserable... make sure you're not "double dosing" - some cold meds have ibuprofen or acetaminophen in them!). It sounds like she has had a febrile seizure. It does not usually cause any long-term problems, but if it happens again, she needs to go to the doc or ER to be evaluated. Not sure where you're doc is coming from - as a nurse I would tell my patients to be seen in this situation! Make sure she drinks plenty of liquids - dehydration can be a problem with high fevers. Remember that popsicles and jello count! ;-)

Take her to a different doctor immediately. 105.9 F is a seriously high temperature!

I agree with all the posts I read, Take your child to ER immediately and get a new dr!! That is way to high of a temp not to do anything, that. I have learned to always go with my gut when it comes to my kids, nobody knows them better than we do.

Get her to Mary Bridge hospital if you are in the Tacoma area! That temp is way too high to mess with. I am not a doc, but I know that our pediatrician brings my kids in when the temp hits 104! Mary Bridge at Tacoma General is a great place to go! The ER is fast for the kids. I will be praying for your little one!

honestly is sounds like you might need a new doctor. I would insists that he sees her or take her to the ER.

Personally, I'd be ignoring the doctor and getting her in to urgent care ASAP. It could be strep throat, sinus infection, all kinds of stuff. Good luck!

I am so sorry that you are going through this. Please find a new doctor. I agree with all the other mom's out there...take your daughter in ASAP. There is something going on that her fever is sooooo high. Also, when you get your daughter stable, I have a great chiropractor in Tacoma. He has been in practice in the area for over 30 years. His name is Dr. Milasich on 6th and Mildred...he may even be able to help you find a new doctor. It is a family office and his daughter works there too. They have taken great care of me and my 21/2 year old daughter. My daughter has great health and I believe it has to do with their assistance in our care.

I would take her in to the ER or walk in clinic. If your gut tells you she isn't right, I would follow it. Sounds like she had a febrile seizure. I would take her in.

I completely agree with everyone, that is too high and hit 106! Your doctor should have told you go go to the ER right away if he/she was too busy to see you! Get her seen!

Tell the doctor to stuff it, and get your little girl to the ER now! Temperatures over 104 can cause serious brain damage in little ones. Forget what the doc has said and get your little one the care she needs before there is permanent damage.

I don't mean to be alarming at all, but when my kids have had temps at 104.anything or higher I've been told to take them to get seen immediately by my doctor.

If your doctor doesn't want to see her take her to urgent care to get checked out, better safe than sorry I would think. Sometimes a fever can indicate there is something wrong.

Hello - I am sorry, but I would take her to the emergency room and stop calling your doctor! I would not be able to stand being told that the fever has not been high long enough!!! I know they have their reasons but come on!

Temp is high enough. Take her in, don't take "no" for an answer. You must make sure it isn't anything serious. Take care of your child and go with your gut.

I would agree with the others. You must take her in to urgent care right away. Scratch that doctor's name off your list and find a new one.

To me that temp seems high enough to warrant a visit to the doctor. You know your child better than anyone and if this is making you nervous, take her in.

Take her to the emergency room now. Get a different doctor.

My suggestion, find a new doctor and get her in immediately. There is absolutely no reason why the doctor can't check her out and rule out serious things instead of making you wait it out to rule out the minor things. A temp that high can point to a serious infection, so there is no reason to wait it out while things could be getting seriously out of hand!

Take your child to a doctor NOW. If the temps are really that high you need to get her to a doctor. Find a different doctor. Go to an urgent care. Do something.

Hi, Hopefully by the time you read this things will have gotten better but if not, call your doctor and don't mess with the the girl in the office who IS NOT medical staff, just tell her you are bringing your little one in and go. Either that or take them to the E.R.
Just the fact that the fever won't stay down would be enough to take her in and for the that person to tell you not to bring her in, makes me really mad. Make sure you tell your doctor about her because a lot of time they have no idea. Also make sure she gets lots of fluids!

Our ped. has always told us to come in if the temp gets to 105. Since your ped. doesn't seem too concerned, I'd probably take her to urgent care and look for a new doctor. Especially since she was walking funny. What do your instincts say? Follow them.

If your child's temp persists I would take her in. It is not normal to have that high of a fever for a long time. You sound like you are doing the right things. You can also try alternating between motrin and tylenol. In other words giving something every 3 hours for fever control. However, if your daughter is having jerking movement, she could be having a febrile seizure. That is an emergency and she should be seen right away. I deal with kids and fever on a daily basis and you are rightfully concerned!!

If that temp doesn't go down to normal today then either take her in to her doctor or take her in to the emergency room of your local hospital. Those jerky movements and inability to walk could be due to some type of a seizure that could be caused by the high temperature. My doctor never even waited this long with my kids. He knew that I didn't bring them in or call him unless things were bad.

You did the right thing by taking her to the doctors. In my opinion you should get another doctor. If you get a feeling in your gut that what the doctor is telling you isn't right.....then go against him! 102 yes I believe it is ok to keep your child home...but 105+ most definately MAKE a doctor see your child. They can not turn you away. I would reprimand that doctor by telling him what a huge mistake he made and then find yourself a new doctor. Hope your child is feeling better. :-)
