4 Year Old Asks This Question: Why Do You Wear a Bra and What Are They For?

Well, I had a chuckle this week when I turned around and my 4 year old was wearing my bra. She wanted to know why I wear them and what they are for. I just told her that I wear them to cover my breasts. She seemed okay with that response, but she often brings those questions up again. I don't want her to think that breasts are being covered because they are bad or something to be embarrassed about. I would love some to hear from some of you wonderful mamas as to your ideas for responses. thanks!

So What Happened?

Wow-- thanks for the great responses! I love them and will definitely use them. I should add this caveat that I told my daughter that my bra covered my breasts which is really more true than anyone knows. I am not well-endowed (ha!-- pretty flat really) and so my bras basically just provide coverage rather than do much support. However, I think I will remind my daughter that bras are like underwear that keep me comfortable-- and that, when she is older, she will get to wear one, too. I mostly want my daughter to feel comfortable and confident about her body. Thanks again!

Wow - you have a smart, confident, trusting little girl -- you've done a great job. Another answer is ''' I wear these bras' to help my breasts stay pretty and comfortable. ( you DONT" need to explain why breasts without bras are less apt to stay pretty and comfortable --- that's for another decade) --- And I promise you are correct--- closed doors equal open ones - and ones you might never have even dreamed you could walk through.

The way I explained it to my now 5 year old is that bras are just like underwear for her. I wear one everyday to keep myself comfortable and dressed appropriately and just as you don't wear underwear(we mean panties here)with bathing suits you don't wear a bra with one either. I've also explained that when she is older she will wear one too and she can pick out whatever one she wants. That made her excited about "one day when I'm bigger" and satisfied her curiosity. Just wait til you get the bigger questions a bra thankfully is easy I've already had to explain menstruation to my five year old.

My answer to this is: It's my underwear and it makes me feel comfortable. Just like your undershirt (if she wears them).
Pretty common question, you will probably get some more about body parts and what they are for. IMO this is a perfect age for starting to teach your children about their bodies.

I would have said to support them, so they don't bounce around so much. I would not want to imply they need to be covered for fear of suggesting there is something shameful about them. I'm also skeptical of the whole idea that wearing a bra "keeps them pretty."
