4 Year Old and Her Backwards Letters

My 4 year old daughter has been having a lot of trouble with reversal of her letters and numbers. She does it when writing and reading them. For example, she'll see a 5 and call it a 2. I think this is pretty normal for this age, but just thought I'd ask for some feedback.

What can I do next?

She is perfectly fine! I teach first grade (ages 6-7) and there are still students who work on writing letters the correct way. You could give her a chart of the alphabet that she can refer to when writing which could remind her of the direction. She is still very young so I wouldn't worry about a thing. Good work getting her started!!!

My son is 5. When he was learning his letters at 4 he was writing backwards too. He would actually write whole words backwards not just the letters. I asked the teacher and she told me it was perfectly normal and not to worry. I still worried but he doesn't write backwards anymore. He still gets the numbers a little turned around (i.e. he sees 81 and says 18) but I think he knows his letters a little better than the numbers right now. You may want to speak with her teacher or dr. just to be sure.

Very normal. Don't worry about it at all, you'll see this until 5/6 years old. Gently correct but don't make a big deal out of it.

Don't worry, this is normal. I have a ten and six year old. When my first born did this my husband was convinced he had a learning disorder. While helping in his preschool and later Kinder class, I noticed others did the same thing. And, sure enough he straightened them all out in his mind.

When my daughter started learning to write and did some backwards - same response from my husband - Oh, no. She has a learning disability. But, no. Completely normal. She has corrected herself too.

I think that it all just learning patterns and the right way things go. It takes time and lots and lots of practice.

She'll get them right in no time.

I have a slightly different (still positive) take on this than the other moms. My daughter also occasionally writes letters, numbers and even whole words backwards - but she can write them correctly and usually does. when this started - at around age 3-1/2, her preschool teacher said that it is actually a sign of high intelligence - that once the child learns how to write, they experiment by writing the letters, numbers and words differently. don't worry!

Hi J.,
I've been a preschool teacher for 10yrs and will agree with others that it is totally normal! I've been answering that question for years now from moms just like you! ;)
