4-Year-old Won't Blow Her Nose

Does anyone have any ideas on how to convince a 4-year-old to blow her nose? My daughter absolutely refuses to even try blowing her nose and instead snorts in to the point where she occasionally makes herself throw up. She says she's afraid to blow her nose but won't really elaborate on what she's afraid of. My husband and I have run out of ideas on how to get her to try blowing her nose. Please help us!

What can I do next?

Hi K.. Remember the blue bulb the hospitals use in the nursery? This is what worked for me. If their noses were real stuffed up, & full of mucous i suctioned them. Wheather of not they wanted it done. They had the choice, blow or get the blue thing. I had them hold their breath & blow the air out the nose, they get the hang of it eventually. Good Luck!

Sometimes they're afraid of the tissue and the wipe after the blow! My daughter was... I taught her to blow in the tub so she could just BLOW away (I know, gross) and wipe it herself with a washcloth... it got her over the issue... and her little sister thought it was hilarious which actually helped. Good luck!

Hi K..

I got my 3.5 YO son to blow his nose by making a contest out of seeing how far he could blow a feather with his nose when he *didn't* have a cold. This translated pretty well--he still likes to sniff in sometimes, but at least the tide is turning. . ;-)

Good luck!

this will sound funny but when my daughter (4 1/2) takes a shower either with me or her-self i showed her how to in the shower and then after a while she did it on her own and me and her dad use to pretend that we had to and we would blow mine or his nose and then she would want to that way .. its like a game that they have to see u doin more than once and then they copy and after a while then she would do it on her own whether she had to or not .. hope that helped a little ..

I was so proud of myself when I came up with this trick for my son and then when it worked for my daughter, I knew it really worked. I just tell them to "pretend you're blowing out all your birthday candles with your nose. Believe it or not, this worked beautifully with both my kids starting at about age two as well as friends' kids.
