I have been pottytraining my 3 yearl old daughter since Memorial weekend. Is is doing a really good job at home..on the pottychair. My question is what do I do when we have to go to town? She will not sit on a toilet...and I don't really think carrying around the pottychair when shoppping is an option. All suggestions are appreciated!

So What Happened?

I got a fold up potty seat to use in public restrooms and she didn't seem afraid to sit on the big potty. BUT..she refused to use it at home. Then after a few outings and using the potty seat she started requesting to sit on the big potty at home (with no potty seat). NOW she refuses to use the potty chair at home, it has to be the "big potty". She's doing great!! Thanks for the good suggestions!!

There are little fold up toilet seats that are really easy for carrying aroung that fit over the top of any reular sized toilet. I would start trying to get her switched to that at home and then you can take it out with you where ever you go

Make it a game. She may not be ready. What I did was use pull-ups when we went out. She may need more practice on the little chair before she becomes comfortable witht the big potty. Some kids are afraid they're going to fall in the big potty. I'd just be patient. She may surprise you and go when you least expect it. Make her go at home before you leave. That may help. Good luck!!!!!!!

I told my daughter that she was a big girl, and that it was time for her to go potty in the potty, asked of she wanted to, she of course said yes, i then told her by looking her in her eyes, making contact, and saying if you go potty in the potty for one week then we will buy some dora panties.

She had zero accidents, and is wiping her own BMs.

Just to let you know you are not alone. My daughter did the same exact thing at her age and over time she was just fine. One thing I thought about is those insert potty seats you insert in the toilet. some toilets are so big and their feet don't touch the ground the child feels insecure. Anyway, I think over time it will pass.

My son has no problems using a public bathroom.. but if he had to have a bm in one i think he'd have problems with the size. so as the others mentioned, i got the folding seat that makes the adult toilets smaller around. but also got this travel potty just in case we were some where that i couldn't get to a public place fast enough.
if it comes down to it.. i suppose one of these versions would be better than her going in her car seat.

I got my travel potty at baby's R us..
it's the second one from the left.

It sounds crazy, but it helped in potty training my boys... have her try sitting backwards on the toilet so she can steady herself. (Carrying hand disinfectant is smaller than a potty chair!) It might help!

I had the same problem with my son... he was scared to sit on the big potty for a while so I used the folding potty seat. It slips right into his bag and is easy to use! We used it for six months or so until he was ready to use the big potty without it! This is the website for the folding potty seat! Hope this helps!http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId...

some of the newer malls have the smaller toilets now, we got a folding potty seat that sits over the potty so they don't feel like their falling in. Just be sure to have it unfolded all the way or it can pinch them.

I hate public toilets. The new flushing mechanisms SUCK. Can I make that any bigger? their are super loud and that can scare kids. also, if the move the slightest bit it'll trigger the flush. That's not the normal way a toilet flushes.

If it's the flush she's afraid of, try carrying some tape and a not pad that you can tape a piece over the sensor. If it's the size like she's going to fall, it may just be a matter of time or a potty seat.

My son, will not go in if the floor is dirty looking. The best bathrooms are the new Casey's convenience stores. They are big and white. And he goes every single time there. But someplace with a gray or dark colored floor he says literally, "no mommy, too yucky."

If you can determine what aspect she's afraid of, then that might help find a solution. unfortuneately, the only course may be time.

My suggestion would be to get a portable children's toilet seat cover. They are plastic, fold up, and have different characters (Dora, Spongebob, etc) on them. You can buy them at Babiesrus, I know, and maybe Toysrus and Target. Get your child's favorite character and begin using it at home on the big potty. Once your daughter is used to that then you can take your show on the road. Hopefully she'll be so excited about the new big girl potty seat in Dora that she'll be excited to use it. Good luck!!
