3.5 Years Post Partum and Even More FAT! Help Advice Needed.

Im officially fat...I think 'obese' is the pc term. Im 5ft 4 and 170 pounds. Prior to getting pregnant, I was a bit on the heavierr side at 145 pounds. Ive struggled with my weight in my 20's but effectively kept it at around 127/130 with lots of exercise and strict diets. When I got pregnant, I was hungry...truly ravenous and although I ate no processed food (yup everything made from scratch), I managed to put on a whopping 70 pounds. I lost much of the weight in the first few months due to breastfeeding, however that seemed to plateau and even though I breastfed for 3 years, the weight remained the same (and even went up a few pounds). After weaning a few months ago, I gained 7 pounds! Its true that I dont exercise as I used to (hard between full time work and childcare - husband and family are not around to watch my son while I triapse off to the gym). I do, though, bike to and from work (about 20 min of cardio each way). I need some kind of motivation, tips or something else. Its suffice to mention that I have a super hard time dieting now as I get grumpy (very grumpy even) when Im on a calorie restricted diet. (I do eat only wholegrains, no meat, low sugar diet). Im 40 and I just find it tough to get the motivation to do this. Anyone else with a similar problem?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

This update might be a bit late but for all who might read Id like to give feedback. Firstly Id like to thank all who responded. It was very helpful. Getting back on track is a slow but steady process. Ive been making small tweeks here and there and I see results (only 5 pounds lost but Im confident I will loose more). Ive made a consious effort to be active, as much as possible, with my son. We ice skate, swim and do yoga together. At work, Ive made it a ritual to take a 20 min walking break. I finally made a space in the house for my workout corner and I spend 20 min (at least) exercising there. I made it special by hooking up a TV in that corner (I dont have TV in the house so its the only TV I get to watch). I tweaked my diet and removed all snacks (I know that its suggested to eat 2 snacks a day but somehow that doesnt work for me). I eat 3 meals a day and am trying to be mindful of what I eat (I think I need to work more on this area). Hopefully this will amount to some significant change over the next few months. Thanks ladies!

I was in the same situation as you. Same height and weight. I did two things. Its hard for me to diet so I started on ALLI to help me with eating properly. I also work full time and have to get the kids at a certain time from childcare. I hit a plateu with my weight so I bought taebo and other dvds but coming home I used excuse after excuse not to do them. I did my research and found A gym I can afford that had childcare. They watch my kids for two hours while I work out. Look for a gym that has childcare and also ask if your job has a contract with one called a coporate account so that your rates will cheaper.

I am overweight still 2 years after having my second baby. My family is going to be starting a plan by Gillian Mckeith. She has a few books out called You are What you Eat. One is a cookbook then another is an informational plan sort of book. I have seen her program many times on BBC America also called You Are What You Eat. It is basically eating lots of fresh foods packed with vitamins and minerals. It might be worth looking into.

I know how hard it is to find time for yourself. Since you are familiar with gyms, find one w/good childcare. It was a lifesaver for me--I took the kids to the gym and got an hour to myself (and a shower alone) in the process. You can go on the weekends. It's tough, but you might want to try to rise early and go before your husband and kids wake up. Or go in the evening and let your husband have some time w/the kids. I also just loved throwing the kids in the stroller and going for a long walk--it made everyone feel better.

Put some healthy snacks in your purse, desk, car. I like Ziploc bags of peanuts and raisins (OK, I throw in some M&M's too), popcorn, granola bars, bananas and apples. Then when you find you're hungry you won't be tempted by fast food or a candy bar.

I also have a friend who joined Weight Watchers online--you enter in what you eat and it calculates calories, etc. for you. She said it was awsome because you got to choose what you eat, but when your calories are up, no more eating. Good luck, you are motivated and can do it!
