Hi all! Any good tips for 5 women late 30s doing a college reunion somewhere a short flight away from Boston? No camping. Not sure of the season, maybe spring. Thanks!

What can I do next?

We've been to the Darby Field Inn in NH many times over 25 years - just a lovely spot. Rooms in various sizes/price ranges, fantastic dining area with a view of the mountains, large country breakfast is included, pleasant grounds for hiking or lounging if the weather is good, charming tavern within the building with an adorable but well stocked bar and several nice tables (you can eat dinner/lunch there if you want), big living room with stone fireplace, hospitable hosts (husband & wife) with well trained staff, great wine list (and lots of help ordering if you want it), relaxed atmosphere and no pressure. You just make yourselves at home, and if you want help, you ask for it, but no one's in your face trying to get you to buy services like a lot of large hotels. A lot of antiques in the rooms, but many modern upgrades. It's a large old house with a few creaky floors - charming in that old New England way. It's at the end of an isolated road so there is no traffic and nothing commercial next door - just woods and private homes. There are no little kids - it's a very adult retreat.

They have some optional add-ons that I think you have to arrange ahead of time, like massages. But you aren't paying for someone to be on staff all the time if you aren't interested.

Nearby there are easy hiking trails in state reserves (look along the Kancamagus Highway which has lots of overlooks, places to stand on stones while the river goes by next to you, etc.), covered bridges, antique shops, near the North Conway shopping outlets, near downhill and XC skiing if you like that and go in the winter (but in mild weather you can take the chair lift up the mountain for a scenic view), lots of restaurants for great food (and the staff helps you - no pressure to eat dinner there), and plenty of other suggestions.

And no, I'm not related to them at all and I don't know anyone who works there! It's just a lovely gem.

You can call and ask for adjacent rooms and maybe some sort of group deal. I've seen them on Groupon and they're part of that network of some Inns that give reciprocal discounts.

Other good places are Rockport/Marblehead, Cape Cod (you might be able to rent a house off season for just a weekend rather than the full week minimum in season - we stayed at a great 5 bedroom home in Harwich with a very nice owner and a beautiful place although it might be a little big for just 5 women, though you could have your own rooms), Lenox & North Adams in Western Mass. (Rockwell museum, other art museums), Newport (expensive restaurants but maybe you can get a deal, do a mansion tour or two, great seafood, walk the Cliff Walk).

Tarrytown NY - Washington Irving house/Sleepy Hollow, some mansions you can tour, views of the Hudson River, charming town.

I realize these are all driving distance, not a flight.

Basin Harbor Club in Vergennes VT is terrific in the good weather - not sure when they open for the spring. Main house, many cottages in different sizes, right on Lake Champlain but with a small harbor, maritime museum, family owned/operated. Big porches with Adirondack chairs, lake cruises in good weather, beautiful and extensive grounds, good golf course, big dining room. Not cheap but really great. http://basinharbor.com Also family owned/operated, been there a long time. My family started going when I was a kid - everyone could do what they wanted on one large property.

Good luck and have fun!

The Outermost Inn on Martha's Vineyard. Owned by James Taylor's brother, Hugh. Stayed in by presidents and stars. Beautiful and drivable (with a ferry ride). http://www.outermostinn.com

My husband and I stayed in the lighthouse room. Gorgeous. It's expensive, but split among friends, it wouldn't be too bad.

Old Saybrook, Connecticut. There is a spa/hotel etc right on the sound. The town is very "quaint".

Or Toronto. There is a huge arts fair there - I can't remember when, but I've heard of it.

I recommend going to NYC! There is so much to do you will wish you had a week instead of a weekend. LOL

Can't think of anywhere more perfect than NYC. There is so much to see and so much to do. With the right research and proper planning it doesn't have to cost a small fortune.

My Aunt just returned from a trip to Niagra Falls. She said it was beautiful and so much fun. She said there was plenty to see. So much to see she didn't get a chance to see it all for the days she was there. Her trip was with a few of her girl friends.

Head North into Canada. I'm certain there are beautiful places with plenty to do there. I know Toronto hosts a jazz festival which is amazing if you are into jazz music.

I would LOVE to get back to Boston!! It's my "home" and I haven't been in about 6 years...I miss it!!

My mom, sister, and I just did a 3 night girls weekend in DC. It was amazing! We stayed at the Renaissance Mayflower (oldest luxury hotel in DC) and ate at Morton's Steakhouse, I Ricchi, and Old Ebbitt Grill - all top DC restaurants. We also went to a show at Perry's for breakfast, took a Trolley tour, saw a movie in Chinatown, and went to see Sheer Madness at The Kennedy Center. Our whole weekend was relaxing, enjoyable, perfect!

I have never been to NYC and would LOVE to go. I want to get my kids there and then it gets really expensive. So I'd think either NYC or DC would be fabulous! Lots of shopping, shows, restaurants in either city.
