Hi moms,

My friend's little one is having mucous in her stool that is two colors of green. Is there any cause for concern? Should she call her Ped.? My guy only experienced that when he was congested, but she hasn't been. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks :)

The two-tone should be fine...the mucous is not fine. Tell her to take the baby in...she may need to provide a stool sample.

With my baby the green color meant that she was not getting enough of the hind breast milk. She liked to snack for about 5-10 minutes, and then she'd snack one to two hours later. The baby has to drain the breast in order to get the fatty milk at the end - resulting in yellow poop. Try to get her to eat for about 20-30 minutes in one sitting.

Interesting responses! I love learning on this site. However, I adopted my daughter at 3 months and she was not being breastfeed. She was on soy formula due to sensitive stomach. At 5 or 6 months old, she had the green poop and her ped said it was caused by a virus. We never changed her diet and her poop returned to normal in a couple of days.

Mucous is definitely something I'd see a doctor about.

Good luck and let us know the final results! Take care, S.

I had the same experience as the previous responder...both my boys had cow's milk allergy. I breastfed them and eliminated ALL cow's milk from my diet. Their "reflux' went away, their 'colic' went away, their stools turned normal and they started sleeping better. It's always worth a try!

sounds normal to me. As far as the poop goes, as long as it's "normal" texture ie..not runny/hard. It's fine. Then mucus part, I'm not sure about. Maybe the baby is getting a cold? A call wouldn't hurt, but I'm sure the baby is fine.(I'd watch over the next day or so)

I had the experience of having my son suddenly have a green color to his stool. It was like the stool was some melted green crayons!

I found out that the blue icing on the Batman birthday cake he had consumed changed the color of his stool. Others said they saw the same when their child ate the blue colored snow cones. In a matter of 24 hours or so, the color was gone.

Good luck!

Mucous in the poop is often a sign of an allergy. It may be to milk or some other food item. I would focus on the major ones first. Milk, Egg, Nuts, Shellfish, Soy. It could be any of those. If mom is nursing have her take those items out of her diet one at a time. If she is on formula I would switch to one that is not milk based. If that doesn't fix it try one that is not soy based. Some kids are allergic to both. Good luck.

If your friend is breastfeeding it could be an allergy to dairy products. I have a freind that had to quit eating dairy completely while breastfeeding. Her son's poos went back to yellow and the mucous went away. Have your friend call her pedi to ask about allergies. I think the green color and the mucous is an indication of allergies.

Hello,

My 6 month old has had mucous in her diaper since whe was a couple of weeks old. i breastfed for about 5 months and recently stopped, but i never made enough so she still had about 2 bottles of formula a day. (similac advance - blue) i have asked my doctor repeatedly if the mucous is ok, and every time she says "oh she is fine, as long as she is gaining weight". But as a mother i just dont feel that it is right. This is only my first baby so i dont know whats right or wrong but i just know. I feel like i should be able to trust the doctor, but more and more i feel like i cant. Every diaper has mucous in it, sometimes more than others. I asked about switching formla and they told me not to. 6 months later, im finally going to go against what the doctor said and try Similac sensitive and then if i dont notice a difference, i will try the milk free one. Has anything changed with your friends little one?

When my daughter was an infant, her diapers were mucousy... I never really picked up on the fact that she was allergic to cows milk until we had gone through practically a 2 years of sinus infections, antibiotics, reactions to antibiotics, ear tubes, x-rays, allergy tests... ugh! Your friend might want to switch to a formula that is not based on cow's milk and see if that ends the muscousy diapers. If it does, then the baby might have an infant/toddler milk allergy (which typically the child will out grow by age 4-5). I wish I had found out sooner than later...

My little guy experienced the green mucous stool as an infant - it turned out to be a food sensitivity. I eliminated the following out of my diet while breastfeeding - wheat, milk, sugar - it turned out to be wheat. The green mucous went away as well as the diaper rash. I would certainly have her call the pedi, though. He is now 21 months and is able to eat wheat fine, he just could process it as an infant.

Our doctor has said when mucous is present in the stool it can be a sign the stomach (lining) is very irritated; she should call her doctor.
