Hi moms,

I am in desperate need to get my 3 month old to sleep. He is lactose intollerant and has acid reflex. I am nursing him and have changed my diet and have him on medicine. He is no longer fussy!!! but is not sleeping. He did good for about a week. He would sleep 5-6 hours at night and an hour every 2 hours during the day. Now I have to rock him to sleep at night (and make sure he is good and asleep) in order for him to stay down. Then he is only down for about 2-3 hours. He does have one period at night where he goes 3-4 hours. I try to get him to take naps and he goes to sleep, but will only stay asleep for about 20 minutes once I lay him down. I have tried music, lights on and off, and noise and quiet, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone have any idea what I can do to get him to sleep?

Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have a 4 month old with acid reflux - changed my diet and he is on medicine too - so I've gone through this just one step ahead of you. Have you read the book "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child"? It has helped me alot to encourage me to do whatever it takes to get my baby to sleep as much as possible. I have let him sleep in the bed with me (just during the day, when I lie by him awake), sleep in the swing, carseat, whatever. The author says to especially do this for morning sleep because that gives the most rem sleep that produces a hormone that will help calm them to sleep now and in the future. So - we rarely do anything to mess up that morning nap right now! Also, if my baby wakes up after 20 min. (or really anything less than an hour), I quickly pick him up (before he's good and mad :)) and rock him back to sleep. He usually falls back asleep quickly and will stay asleep for another hour or so. I've done this for a while and it has worked for us and has helped to develop MUCH better sleep habits for my baby. He now normally takes about 3 naps a day, 1.5 to 2 hours per nap - rarely waking after 20 min. or so anymore!
Hope it works well for you!

I had a similar situation with my 4 month old. Actually her situation is almost identical (she has acid reflux also). She was sleeping through the night for a while and then all of a sudden she started waking several times during the night. She also stopped napping as well during the day. Now she goes down for the night at 7 or 8 and wakes once. I think that her sleep pattern is just changing a little and now she is starting to settle into something new that works better for her. I think its pretty common for babies to go through periods like this. I have several friends who have been in similar situations. You might need to just wait it out and I bet that he will settle into a more normal sleep pattern. You might try putting him down a little earlier. That seemed to do the trick for us. There are only so many things you can try until you get to the point where you just have to let your baby follow their internal clock when it comes to sleep.

Hope this helps, I know how you feel!

Well....my 2nd boy would wake up every 2-3 hours and the only thing that would get him back to sleep was nursing/bottle. I hate to tell you this, but he did not sleep thru the night until he was 12 months old. He would nap 4-5 times a day but only for 20 minutes or so. I posted on mamasource as well and got a ton of advice. Bottom line is that after 12 months of waking up every 2-3 hours, HE decided to sleep thru the night. Now, he goes down at 8p and wakes up at 7a and still takes 2 long naps during the day.

I too tried everything...bed earlier, bed later, lights on/off, temp changes in the room, cereal before bed, paci, rub his back, noise maker, let him cry it out...on and on and NOTHING worked. He finally slept thru the night when he was ready.

Sorry, probably not what you wanted to hear, but hope that it will go away eventually and he will sleep.
