Good afternoon ladies. My son and DIL went for another scan (this one at a hospital) and a third kidney has been ruled out. However, her one kidney is enlarged. No fluid on it, blood flow good. From what I have read, I am confident that the issue will
resolve itself after she is born. My DIL will talk to the two doctors tomorrow and compare the two scans. They did mention a
fetal MRI, but the kids are not so sure they would do that. It would be to put their mind at ease. Contrast, in general is not good
for kidneys, so they really do not want to put baby at any risk. So my question to you out there is has anyone gone thru this
same scenario? Any info would help. Boy all I can say is some ways these U/S cause more grief for parents. Sometimes ignorance is bliss!! When I was pregnant, we just went along very happily. Now you ladies have so much to worry about. How
do you enjoy a pregnancy. Oh well. Take care and have a great day.

So What Happened?

Doctors were talking about a fetal MRI but that requires contrast and contrast is not good for kidneys. So when she is born they
will do an ultrasound of her kidneys and then if there is a problem, a plan will be As a mother it breaks my heart to see them
so worried. I try to reassure them that it is something that can be fixed, if necessary or treated, and in their head they know this,
but in their heart it is different. I say a prayer every night for them. Thanks ladies you are all the best.

I'm sorry your son and DIL are going through this. I know how bad news can really put a dark cloud over what should be a joyous time. Our middle son had/has heart issues and they were discovered before he was born. Ignorance is bliss--but knowledge is power!! The more they know--the better (in my opinion)! Prayers for your granddaughter!

With my second pregnancy, my 20 week u/s showed an enlarged kidney. I was told that there was nothing they could do in-utero except watch the development, so they could be prepared if anything was needed after birth. Best case, it would correct itself, worst case, kidney transplant. I was sent for another scan at 30weeks. This time I was told the kidney was fine but that the ureter was dilated (the duct leading to the kidney). Best case, it would correct itself, worst case, a life of being prone to UTI and bladder infections. I continued my pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby boy. He was put on a very small dose of preventative antibiotics for 6 weeks. At that time I took him for an ultrasound and a dye contrast procedure. The u/s showed that there was an abnormality to his kidney, but the ureter was fine. The second test showed that he had what they described as a skin flap on his kidney, which was why it was showing up "enlarged/abnormal" on the scans. But he had no reflux back in to the kidney which was the main concern. He was taken off antibiotics and we were told to bring him back at a year for another u/s. At one year of age the flap was almost gone, and at 2yo there was no sign of it. My son is almost 5 now and has never had any uti/bladder/kidney issues to date.

As hard as it is to hear something could be wrong, it is helpful to know if specialists will be needed at delivery. Hopefully your grandbaby will grow and develop out of this condition like my son did. Best wishes to all!

I was 38 when I gave birth to my last baby girl. I had to go in for weekly scans due to my age. One of them came up funny and they offered me the amnio--. I asked the doctor the purpose of the amnio and what we would gain. He said mostly, I would know if the baby was healthy and if their was something wrong they would have hands there to immediately work on the baby, should that be the case.

My husband and I discussed it and they were mostly looking for mental retardation due to my age. So far, everything had been normal and I don't even remember what they thought could be abnormal, but we decided against the amnio. I asked him what we would do if the baby was downs and he said raise it. I denied the test and months later we had a healthy baby girl.
