I never liked the sound quality of the kids' versions. I would either invest in something that mom/dad control or buy one second hand on craigslist/thrift store that won't be upsetting if it breaks again.
Hi there - this is one of those curiosity questions, certainly not a pressing issue, but the CD player that we have in my son's room is on the fritz, so we would like to get him one for his 3-year birthday. Question is, buy another one to put up high on the shelf and have mom & dad control or buy one designed for kids to play with, too?
Just curious to see if your kids have used the kids' version if you have it...
Thanks.

You're going to think this is crazy, but I just got my 1 year old an iPod. I figured, why not? I can download music from iTunes and also import all of our children's CDs. I bought a small dock to play music in her room as she is obviously too young for earbuds. :) They way technology is moving these days, seemed like a small iPod Nano made the most sense.
I bought my little guy an inexpensive adult CD boom box and burned copies of his favorite CDs so that he could do it all himself. If he ruined a CD I just burned another copy. He still loves to lay on his floor and listen to the radio or CD's!
I recommend the Discovery Kids MP3 player. It is pre loaded with some cute kids songs, then you can also add your own down loads. Cost varies from 29-69 bucks so shop around! The batteries are a pain to install but my 3 and 5 year old LOVE it
IMO might as well use a regular one - our kids have always used the regular ones (and with more and more people going to MP3 players, there's a good chance you could get one off of Freecycle if yours breaks)
I just bought this cuddle bear for my son with a built in MP3 player (on deal for $30 now, normailly $60.) Not only can you download your own CD's - it comes with 5 lullabies that includes your childs name, lets you upload stories, custon songs etc. and even collaborate with other members in your family (Nana, Papa , Aunts etc.) to record to the web site and upload right to the bear. Your child operates the controls on the paws. Check it out - I know my almost 3 yr. old is gonna love it!!!! http://fmlyfnd.us/ojA9CD
We got our son an inexpensive one from Target and taught him how to use it. He loves that he can change the CD's himself. It's helpful though if you have the resources, make copies of his favorite CD's and let him use the copies. If yours is anything like mine, those CD's will get the rough treatment in and out of the machine.
We taught our girls to operate the adult boom box just after they turned three, so maybe get another adult one (inexpensive in case he's a bit rough) and have him help?
my son has a speed mc queen cd player that is cute and has held up well. he likes it. but if money is an issue any cheap adult one would work. My guy might have been a tad older but you could always put stickers on the right button.
Buy the Discovery Channel mp3 player. It takes a beating, and my 2 year old was able to work it. You can find it cheaper than price listed in this link. It was sold at Kohl's (if you have those) over x-mas for half that price.
We've had it for 2 1/2 years now, and it's going strong. We deleted all of the songs it comes with, and just loaded it with our own stuff.
