22 Month Old Scared to Pee in the Tub

Hi mamas,
My daughter is 22 months and we haven't tried to potty train her- but we did buy a potty just so she would get used to seeing it and sitting on it if she wanted fully clothed. She has sat on it clothed but nothing else which was fine- we didn't want to rush any kind of potty training. But now at night she freaks out about peeing in the bathtub- she won't pee on herself and has to go and says "pee pee" and cries til we take her out and put her in a diaper (we attempted the potty once but she didn't want to so we didn't try to force the issue). She's been doing this the past few nights and has made us change her again once she pees in her diaper. Is this some kind of readiness thing? Not sure how to handle this because we don't want to rush her before she is ready but she doesn't seem ready but knows when she has to pee at least. I've also noticed she won't poop in her diaper unless she is at home all of a sudden.

Any advice? Anyone else's kid done this?

What can I do next?

What it means is that she is aware of having to pee, she has the control but if she will only do it in a diaper she is probably not ready for potty training.

So yes, it is a readiness thing but she doesn't sound quite there yet.

She's showing initial signs of readiness though she isn't all the way there yet. It's actually very good that she is aware she does not want to pee in her bath water! She is attuned to her body's need to "go." I would be sure to take her out the instant she says she needs to pee and not let her stay in the tub so long that she "cries til we take her out" -- show her that it's OK to get out and pee, even if it's in her diaper. Not terribly convenient for the adults, I know, but taking her out right away and praising her for saying she needs to pee will show her that she's doing the right thing to express her need. Soon she'll be ready to sit on the potty with pants down. Don't rush her.

I started very early having my daughter sit on the potty, naked, in the bathroom while I filled the tub. The sound of the running water had her peeing almost every time. It seemed to be a good, gentle, way to introduce peeing in the potty. I started doing this at about 14 months. By 26 months, she was completely trained.

If your daughter can hold her pee while sitting in water (first of all, she's better than me!) then I would gently encourage use of the potty. She's also shown she can control her poop. She's ready.

What a good girl to know when she needs to go, and be able to hold it long enough to have you get her out of the tub! Id be proud of her and let her know pretty soon she can use the potty seat instead of a diaper and just let her work it out in her own time.

If she can tell you that she have to pee, then it is time to start potty training. My son is 22 months also. We bought him easy ups and decided it was time for him to start potty training because after he uses it he comes to me and say, mommy I boo boo". If they can tell you that they need changing, then they are ready to potty train. Potty training is a process and its not easy so get ready!

If nothing else, it sounds like she is aware of her bodies function, which is a great start!

I suggest you gently tell her the potty is to be used without her diaper and offer to take it off so she can sit on the potty.

No need to make her believe the potty chair is just another seat in the house.

She may not be fully ready to train but at that age I had both of mine sit on the potty undressed before a bath.

Yes I have been dealing with a situation like this but mine is pooping in the tub. She is getting herself ready to be potty trained. So what I would suggest is try putting her on the potty every 20 mins to pee and every 15 mins to poop even with clothes on to get her used to the potty. She is going to be ready in a couple of months. I have a 3 year old that did the same thing That your daughter is doing now. So buckle up it is going to be a tring time but when she does go into the potty try to give her something rewarding. So she goes more often. This is the best thing a parent could do for her/his children is wait til she is ready to go to the potty because you don't want it back firing on you...Try this and see if it will work. Ok?
