We just went in for our 20 wk u/s yesterday (I'm 21 weeks today), and the tech said that the baby was measuring about 1.5 weeks larger except for his stomach. She said she kept getting a measurement showing 23 weeks-(2.5 weeks larger than EDD). She didn't seem concern & at first I wasn't either but now that I've sat on it over night I am wondering if its anything we should be concerned about? She didn't state any other obvious problems but I didn't think to ask either. My next OB appt isn't for another 3 weeks. So I am just curious have any other moms had a baby that just measured a large tummy?

So What Happened?

Thanks everyone for the advice!! The dr. said there's nothing to worry about the large tummy @ this point. Looks like I will be having another scan next month anyway since I'm measuring 10 days larger than my EDD. So I am sure we will have a better idea if there is anything to worry about. Hopefully he's just a big lil' one.

Technicians are NOT doctors - and really aren't supposed to comment at all because of that fact. Call your Doctor right away and demand - don't ask for a review of your US right away - don't wait 3 weeks.
If there's a problem the sooner the better for a plan of action.
There is probably NOTHING wrong so waiting 3 weeks will just stress you out and possibly cause an issue from the stress and lack of sleep.
We were told by our tech that the liver(maybe kidney) was off in size. My OBGYN was really mad that she said anything to us - we went back in for a 2nd US 2 weeks later and everything was normal. 2 of my friends were told by techs that the baby had signs of Down's Syndrome - totally freaked them out - nothing was wrong in either case.
Hang in there - calm down and breathe and be aggressive with your Dr. to get answers - this is not a time to be soft spoken and patient.
Go get 'em!
Pregnancy is the most terrifying roller coaster ride I've ever been on. They don't tell you that in the books!

My daughter measured the same and ended up being 10.7 lbs. I don't think it's anything to be concerned about unless they say too, it probably just means you're baby won't be tiny : )

Call your physician on Monday and leave a message with your concerns. Most EDDs are +/- 2 weeks.

I would certainly talk to your OB about it, but I wouldn't worry too much. Most dr use your last period as the date to determine when you are due. However, that's under the assumption you are on a 28 day cycle. I have checked prospective due dates from the date of my last period, and then again using the ovulation date (I use mymonthlycycle.com) and it comes to about 10 day difference. I also had a friend who had her baby 13 days late and he was 5 or 6 lbs, it makes me think her cycle is off and wasn't considered in the date.
best of luck and congrats!!!

Dear Amy,
Call your OB/GYN on Monday and leave a message regarding your ultrasound.
Your doctor will get a report of the results and look everything over. It usually takes couple of days, so try to relax in the meantime. You leaving a message may help speed that up a bit. Your doctor will let you know if there is a concern or something to keep an eye on.
The placenta was very small when I was pregnant with my daughter so it was checked pretty often to make sure she was developing normally. She was 5 pounds full term, but perfectly healthy in every way.
It's so hard not to worry...
But try not to.
Sometimes no news is good news. I would think if there were something to be seriously concerned about, someone from the imaging department would have been on the phone with your doctor immediately and your doctor would have contacted you. Even on a weekend.
I'll keep you in my thoughts.
Please let us know what the doctor says.

Amy-

I agree with most of the posts here, out of 4 pregnancies and 5 children (twins), at least one or more U/S showed something that was not perfectly in line. I highly doubt there is anything to worry about. Just call your doctor Monday, explain to the nurse what the tech said and let them assure you about what that means. Don't freak out and read every post on the internet and all the horror stories, that's the worst you can do. Enjoy your pregnancy, that baby is still your child and needs a calm Mommy to bring them out healthy.

Take care,
D.

Hi Amy,

My second daughter's belly measured 2 weeks larger than the rest of her with every u/s. She was born with a little Buddha belly, but is perfectly healthy in every way. She's 9 months now, and the belly is still there... she's a very solid little girl, but certainly not fat :)

If you are still worried, call your OB rather than stress out about it. Everything turned out fine with us though :)

Have a great weekend!

son #1 measured several weeks "ahead" of his due date on some measurements & a week or so behind on others. i was SURE of the dates of my LMP, so i knew that due date was the due date. in fact, he was born on his due date, weighing 8 pounds.

son #2 was similar until about 30 weeks, when the dr. noticed his head appeared to be not growing in size. he totally freaked me out with it & started talking about possible issues. he also said that #2 was measuring small - as did several other ultrasound specialists..

the result with #2??? a 9.5 pound normal, healthy boy!!

try not to be too worried. babies, like people, grow at different rates. if it is still "off" at your next appointment, talk to your dr. about it!

good luck!

You will have to wait until your next appt as the tech is not authorized to tell you anything medical during the US. In the meantime don't worry and the dr will call you sooner if there was a problem. My daughter in law was told she appeared to be a week and a half further by the babies head measurement. My most beautiful granddaughter was morn on My 4th her original due date with no problems and the cutest little head ever.
