2 Yr Old Is Always Loud! Any Hints/suggestions on Quieting Him Down?

My 26 month old always seems to be so loud. I try to quiet him down and get him to speak more softly, and he either doesn't, or he does for one sentence then is loud again. My older son was always so quiet that I never had this problem. Sometimes I wonder if he is part of the cause, because he always gets his little brother so hyped up, and because the little one has to be loud to be heard when he's around. Any hints or suggestions would be appreciated!

Hi. I agree with the whispering technique. I've used it in my classes. Play a game where they laugh loud, then in a whisper, sing the word Mom loud and then in a whisper. Practice walking quietly and loudly. Give him an opportunity to relate and remember the differences. Also have whispering conversations, at dinner, in the tub, before bed. Fun.

My 9 year old son is loud and always has been. No matter how many times my husband and I tell him that he needs to speak more quietly, he will for a moment then goes back to his loud voice. This is just how he is and his hearing is perfect. On the other hand, my seven year old daughter is very soft-spoken and we have to tell her to speak up because we can't hear her all the time. I think it all depends on the individual child.

Loudness is fairly typical of most two year olds however I agree you may want to make sure the child doesn't have a hearing issue. Short of that when my grandchildren would get loud at that age, I would simply distract them. I would find quieter things to do such as reading or singing, or even sometimes a favorite cartoon. Often times they are simply overstimulated and they don't know how to calm themselves so a quieter activity helps to sooth them.

I'm following this thread with interest - I have a 4 yr old daughter who is also very loud. She understands the difference between inside and outside voice, but that's it. Her inside voice is still pretty loud and she doesn't seem to know how to modulate it - we're constantly telling her to 'talk softly' - especially with the new baby in the house. So far, nothing has helped!

Anyways, she has only had 2 ear infections <knock on wood>, so I don't think that is the problem.

Good luck!

My daughter is almost five and she still does it. For her, she just gets excited and with excitement, seems to come loudness. I just try to remind her to talk with her inside voice. I also read in a parenting magazine once to take the child outside and let him be loud and then bring him back inside and practice an inside voice. It may take a few times, but he should figure out where it is appropriate to be loud.

Hi,
Does he have any liquid in his inner ear or is there any family history of the ability to hear properly?

Has he had his hearing checked? Often times, those who are suffering hearing loss to a degree, can't tell how loud they are speaking. I have two friends that have hearing difficulties and my son had trouble with his hearing as a younger child due to ear infections. Something to look in to.

Hi K...

My oldest, who is now 5, was always so quiet as a baby. It wasn't until he got older that he started getting loud, which I think is just part of being a 5 year old boy. My youngest on the other hand (who will be 2 in April) is very loud. He without a doubt gets that from his brother, but it could also be something else. It is possible though that he has difficulty hearing. Has your son had any ear infections?? My youngest has had more ear infections than I can count and I was told that being loud is a side effect because their ears are always clogged and then they simply "get used" to being loud. NOT a happy answer by any means! I'd definitely recommend getting his ears checked though.

Good luck!

Check his hearing. He might have low hearing or be stuffed up.

Have you had his hearing checked? My 6 yr old niece was the same way until she got tubes in her ears.

I'm a 54 year old grandmom , When the 2 yr. old starts just keep calm and get him intrested in something he like to do with you. You might even try singing to him sometimes this helps

We had this issue too. We started reading "Mr Brown Can Moo, Can You?" There's the whisper, whisper part then my kids whispered back. Now if I really need my girls to be quiet (like in church) I just whisper "whisper whisper" to them and they'll whisper to me what they want. This took a lot of reinforcement. We also practiced using our inside (quiet voices inside) and we say loud voices belong outside. You have to be willing to let your kids holler as loud as they wish though once they're outside. Sometimes they just have to be given places where that crazy behaviour is acceptable.
