my son is getting really interested in taking his diaper off. he usually does it in the mornings some time before we get him up for the day. so we'll come into his room and his pants are 1/2 off, diaper is 1/2 on, and there's pee everywhere (clothing/bed). anyone have this problem? how do we get him to not do this? thanks!

So What Happened?

ok...my son isn't potty trained, but does sit on the potty, will pee pee into the toilet, etc. he's just not on a potty schedule. hubby & i have figured that he has discovered his peepee (in a real way because now he knows how to make it hard) and so he ends up playing with himself and leaving his pee pee out of the diaper. so that when its time to pee at night, he's peeing on himself. we've resorted to tucking his pj shirts into his pj bottoms and that has solved the situation thus far. thanks for the great ideas ladies!

Totally normal... my daughter did it, too, but usually BEFORE falling asleep so when I would go in and check on her there she would be with her naked little bottom. The best cure- onesies. She was also sticking her hand in her diaper, and I just told her "no, yucky" until one day she came up to me with poop all over her hands- I put her in a time out, and after that I put her in timeout with no warnings when she would do it, and she stopped.

Also, don't make the mistake many parents make by deciding he is ready to potty train just because he can take off his diaper- the two skills are totally unrelated, and you can do a lot of damage, actually, but putting too much pressure on him. You can try, but you have to consider that he A) has to be able to tell you he needs to go, B) has to know when to "hold" and when to "let it go" (this is what my daughter is having a hard time with), and C) he has to be emotionally ready, ie he has to want to do it. If he's not, don't feel bad and don't punish or pressure him.

Catch him before he pees. Every morning first thing you do is take him to the bathroom to pee.

Hi La M., he's 2 get him potty trained, and out of diapers, also don't give him anything to drink an hour before bed time, and if you know around the time he is doing this, go in a little earlier and get him and put him on the potty, that way the pee will not be in his bed, and then you cn praise him. My daughter also does this. We've tried potty training, but decided she really wasn't ready. So, she wears a lot of onesies. By all means, try potty training but don't be discouraged if he (or you) is not ready yet. A great website for potty training pants is http://www.pottyscotty.com

I agree w/ the other mama's: Normal. My son does this , he's 2, and he does it w/ pee. He doesn't like to be wet I guess? Maybe keep a pair of underwear on him so he can't as easily remove the diaper and make a mess? Goodluck!!!

hehe...you have it easy! My son would have poop in his diaper in the morning and finger paint it all over his room. Not fun to clean up. I started putting his pajamas on backwards at night and putting him in overalls during the day...that worked for a week before he figured out how to undress himself again. It might be time to consider potty training.
