2 Year Old Not Growing!!?

I just brought my 2 year old to the Dr because my one year old is close to the same height. Once there the Dr printed out his growth charts for height, weight and head circumference. All of them seem to be "flat lining" instead of continuing with the curve of the first 12-15 months. The Dr told me to give him Carnation instant breakfast and watch to make sure he was eating enough calories for 1 month. He said the problem can be only one of 2 things. Either he is not taking in enough calories or he is not absorbing them. So I have one month to see if he is taking in enough calories, if that is not the problem we start testing him. It is scary for me to just sit and wait for a month. I do not want to start testing him but want to do more. I am going to get him tested for Gluten to see if he is allergic, like Celiac disease, but want to do more?
Has anyone been through this? It just really scared me when the Dr said everything has stopped including the growth of his brain! I am a little freaked out, and of course the Dr is NOT!!

What can I do next?

I have not experienced what you are and am sorry you're going through this! Few thoughts based on your post:

1) My husband's family had several children (he's one of eight) who were deemed "small" when they were young. They all ended up fine and just grew later in life. My husband entered high school at 5'2 and left 4 years later at 6'2. Granted he was the skinniest thing EVERY, but that caught up with him too.

2) Every October there is free testing done at the University of Chicago hospital to check to see if a person carries the Celiac gene/has the disease. I believe it's a blood test that can detect the liklihood of developing the disease. This may be a faster and easier way of determining if there is an allergy to gluten than through diet alone. Check out this site for more information: http://www.celiacdisease.net/testing

My grandmother was diagnosed in her late 50s with Celiac Disease and my mother was dianosed in her mid 50s with the disease. The University of Chicago hospital has one of the more advanced Celiac Disease information/programs/diagnosics/etc. in Chicago. The site is a wonderful information source.

3) Have you considered getting a nutritionist involved? They may have different recommendations for fat/calorie intake than your doctor because it's what they specialize in.

4) Either call your doctor and have another discussion and get your concerns and questions answered or get a second opinion. (I'd do both - simply to learn more about what the doctor is thinking and why he isn't more concerned, and then to present the case, your findings and your current doctor's thoughts to a new doctor.) If you don't see a pediatrition, maybe find one that specializes in growth and development. Or perhaps a pediatric gastroenterologist.

I know there are a lot of people who have great experiences with family doctors and general practicioners, but pediatritions SPECIALIZE in children. It's their only focus.

Good luck and please send an update!
Hugs,
Jen

I would get a second opinion from another doctor asap. I would not wait a whole month, especially if his brain isn't growing either.

my oldest used to always be in the 75% for height and weight than he started to drop, somewhere around 18months. they to wanted me to give him high calorie shakes,i think(pedisure). he has all but dropped off the charts. so for his 5yr check up, they wanted to run some tests, i only let them do the blood( because he already had to have some of that done anyway for kindergarten)they all came back normal. they also did then a x-ray to check his growth plates, they came back as "bones of a 3yr old", which is a good thing because it means he has "room to grow", they called it "delayed growth". i too, was worried when they wanted me to give him the high calorie shakes and talking about those tests or seeing an endoconologist(?). but my gut told me he was/is ok, it is just the way he grows. my husband and i are not tall or big people, so why would we have big kids. i too did not grow untill high school(delayed growth)! but this is just our story, i would listen to your dr.'s concern and also listen to your gut. good luck!

Okay, try not to panic. My daughter did a similar thing. My advice is to ask your Dr to go ahead and write up the script for getting the bloodwork testing done, so you can rule out any medical causes. Personally, I don't see how a one month waiting period would tell you much anyway. So, in my opinion there is no reason to wait and go through the aggravation. My daughter's endochronologist told me that around 18 months or so, the child's own genetics kick in and dictate future growth. So, it's all that good prenatal care that you gave your son that could explain why he was a bigger infant than toddler. Look at where he is now percentage-wise and compare it to where you and your husband are as adults. When my daughter fell off the chart, we ruled out anything medical and realized that her genetics are following her paternal grandmother who is very short. I think your Dr's summation of what is causing the slow growth is a bit shortsighted. You may want to get another opinion, even from another Dr in the same practice. You could also make an appointment with a Pediatric Endochronologist.

It is hard to hear things like this. I am surprised that your Dr. is recommending a chemically laden product like that--if you suspect at all that it is a gluten intolerance or Celiac's do not give him that. Conventional medical doctors, GP's and peds no very little about nutrition--a Chiropractor gets more training in that field than MD's do. Waiting for a month is not acceptable. You can be pro-active now by increasing his consumption of Omega 3's and 6's (the really good fats). Especially if you will get coconut oil (by Nutiva or NOW and get him on some really good quality probiotics--it could be a parasitic imbalance from prescription or over the counter medications), it WILL help. What is going on is probably a combination of things.

You will also want to check on the labeling of your food and remove all high fructose corn syrup and corn syrup solids out of your home. Check out labelwatch.com.

I have some other website and documents I can send you. Just let me know if you are interested. I know you may trust your doctor but I implore you-check for yourself and you are in charge of your son's health. Five boys-you go girl!!

I also have a friend who deals with mothers and young children helping them--this article was from her!! http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/543733/?sc=dwhr;xy=...
