Do some 2 year old kiddos just like ice or is it always an indication of low iron?
My daughter, who is 27 months old, really likes it. She sees it in my cup about 2-3x
a week and says "ice!" and i'll give her a piece, then she'll want "more ice!!" several
times. she eats well, takes a daily vitamin, etc. no indication of anything else wrong.
i'm probably over reacting, but i just thought i'd ask. i know i like ice, and i'm not low on iron...so??? thanks in advance for any insight. :)

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

thank you to everyone who gave some information about the ice eating. :) i think she's fine. i just wanted to confirm it. she only eats it like 2 times a week. i'll ask for another iron check up when i'm at the pedi next time. last iron check up was perfect. thanks again Mommies!!

If everything else is fine, I wouldn't worry about it. Ice ispretty neat from a 2 year old's stand point. I mean it floats, it is REALLY cold and it disappears all by itself.
You could have her tested, but it seems like unneccessary pain if all else is in place, and you certainly don't want to over do the iron intake. They can't get rid of extra like adults can and it is poison in abundance.

My daughter is also 2 and loves ice. Our fridge does not have a lock for the water/ice and she knows how to push the button and help her self to some ice. I would not worry about it. I think they just like the cold and the crunch.

What/whom gave you the idea that craving ice is a sign of iron deficiency? Please let me know so I can find that on my own to check it. I make more iron than my body need and I love ice...it's a great way to help me lose weight, instead of putting food in my mouth I simply put some ice in there.

In the meantime, the following website provides a list of symptoms of iron deficiency which i have copied to this message. Ice chewing or craving is not among them. If you are worried about your daughter's iron levels take her to the pediatrician and have them checked, it is a safe simple stick in the finger and takes like 5 minutes.

"What are the Symptoms of Iron Deficiency Anemia?

"There are many symptoms of anemia. Each individual will not experience all the symptoms and if the anemia is mild, the symptoms may not be noticeable. Some of the symptoms are: Pale skin color, fatigue, irritability, dizziness, weakness, shortness of breath, sore tongue, brittle nails, decreased appetite (especially in children), headache - frontal"

I hope this helps with your situation... ;-)

Hi V.,

Some kids just like the texture and feel of ice. It's interesting to them.

The next time you have an apt. with the pedi, ask to have her blood wrok done, and be specific about your concerns so that they will test minerals. That will give you all the answers you need.

Hi, my little girl is the same age and she loves ice too! I have to watch her because obviously I don't want her to chew on it...but she scavages everyones drinks for ice. We don't use a lot of ice at home but when we go out she's figured out she can take the lid of her cup and there's ice!
I don't think it's anything to worry about, but who am I!

You are not alone. My 2 y/o little girl loves ice as well. She got sick with some kind of tummy bug at Halloween and evern after receiving phenegren she still couldn't keep even water down so I gave her ice and it's been "ice" ever since. She's so bad we'll be at a resturaunt and she'll reach into mine or her dad's cup to get the ice out. :D

Check with the pediatrician next time you go. The concern that I have is from a teeth standpoint. It's not great on the teeth to be crunching on ice frequently. See if you can find her something else to crunch on for long-term benefits. Ask your dentist the next time you take them or call him/her.

Just make sure you give it to her in moderation.
I had a friend whose mother had to have surgery because she had damaged her insides by eating too much ice. It is too cold to eat all the time.

My kids love ice too! They revel in the act of taking the lid off a cup and chewing up the ice.

V.,

My now 4 year old loved ice when he was about a year old. He begged for it anytime he heard the dispenser running. And if he dropped it on the floor, we had to grab it, or he'd chase it around on his hands and knees, licking at it the way Kitty does her water bowl.

I just saw it as a way to get some water into him, and he outgrew it and moved on to other fascinations.
