My daughter who is 26 months old has been pulling her hair and hitting herself in the head with stuff I know it hurts her because she says owww but she won't stop! I don't know what to do? She doesn't hit hard and doesn't leave marks or pull her hair out. How do I make her stop this. Do other kids do this or could something be wrong with her?

What can I do next?

My first thought,

Do you give her lots of attention when she does this?
Is she smiling when she does it?
Just saying "Ow" does not really indicate pain - what is her tone of voice, facial expressions, etc.

Many toddlers latch onto a behavior that we laughed at once and/or gave them lots of attention when they did it. They then continue to do it for the attention factor.

Before diagnosing her with OCD (which is abundant in my family) try ignoring her the next time she does this, and the next time, etc. See if the behavior goes away.

Good Luck

I had a friend who's son would bang his head on the floor - he was allergic to red dye and once she stopped giving him things with that in it, the behavior stopped!!!!

It's a behavioral issue, and will need to be addressed with her pediatrician. You will need to note when this started, and if anything precipitated it. As well as the length that she does this to herself. Either it is a learned behavior or an internal one. Hair pulling is called Trichotillomania, and it is an obsessive disorder in children and in adults. It will need to be psychologically addressed, and treated.

It is not normal. Other posts have suggestions, but I know that I would be worried and wanting to get to the bottom of it.
