I have a two year old daughter who is always sticking her hands in her diaper and right above her butt on her lower back she scratches. She has been doing this since she has been able to reach back there. I never see a rash the only thing i see is cuts from her scratching so much. No matter where we are her hand is itching it. I have taken her to the doctor several times for this since she was about 6 months and they keep saying it can be from her diaper or just dry but her diaper stays dry and i have tried to put everything on it that i can think of without any fragrance and nothing seems to work... She is in so much pain and i feel so bad, she has gotten to the point that she is just used to it now. PlEASE HELP!! If you can think of anything i am willing to try it. Thanks

What can I do next?

If changing diaper brands doesn't work, as others suggested, try hydrocortizone. There's also doctor prescribed Elidel, but only if doc thinks you should. There's also vaseline and/or baby oil with no scent or perfume. There's the lotion called Eucerin that was recommended for my son's eczema when he was too young for anything else. Good luck!

My son had the same thing in the same spot on his back when I was using White Cloud Diapers or Target Brand. I had to switch to Costco Brand or Huggies because they are stretchy in the back. Some of the Generic and other brands don't move with the baby and they create a chafing back there. I would try a different brand diaper and also put something like vasoline on the area so keep it from getting irritated. I hope that helps.

Hello N.! My two year old son just went through a similar situation. His was a rash that was painful to him and would not go away. At first, when I called the ped. they treated him for jock itch over the phone, but it didnt work. We made an appt. an the doctor diagnosed him with eczema. Most eczema cases show up in dry areas, but there is a kind that appears in moist areas (diapers or sweaty areas). So she told me to put Hydrocortisone over the area and then a layer of vaseline or lotion over that to seal in the cortisone. She said to start with the 1% kind that you can find in any store and if that didnt work they could prescribe a stronger kind if needed. But the hydrocortisone worked and now we only have to use it when it starts showing up again. We also switched to Pampers Sensitive wipes that contain no alcohol or perfumes... My son calls them his "good wipes", because the others stung his bottom, and now he doesn't mind being wiped. :)

I'd first, look at what have you possibly changed lately? The diaper brand? Wipes? detergent? Sometimes it's as simple as that too... Good Luck! D.

May I suggest trying a different diaper brand. My daughter was doing this recently with Pampers so I switched to Huggies and she stopped. I just tried to imagine how it would feel to constantly have something paper like rubbing against my skin. I figured it was just irritating. Also, try lotion. Maybe the problem isn't wetness but dryness or chaffing.

Good Luck.

I have a daycare boy that had the same problem. It turned out that they needed to change the soap they did their laundry with. When he was here, I would put on some neosporin (plus pain relief) and that would stop him from itching it for a while. Once they changed their soaps that they washed him with and the soaps that they washed his clothes in, he seemed to stop the itching.

Hope this helps. :)

My son was doing the same thing, and finally had a doctor suggest that we use "DOVE liquid soap" for a bath, instead of the baby soap that we were using, since it is dye free and all that other stuff... and hydrocortizone cream 1%, not the clear stuff, and then put some lotion on it, after the hydrocortizone... it seemed to work. I don't know if this would for you, or not, but, it is the only thing that worked for my son, and we tried many different diaper brands. The doc said that it is caused by friction on the dry part of the diaper, and so keeping it lotioned will help. Good luck!

Hi N., have you tryed changing her diaper brand? we went through something similar and i changed to huggies and we never had a problem since then. if you smell the pampers they smell heavialy perfumed. not huggies and the same with store bought i could always smell a perfumy smell.if that doesn't work i would make an appointment with a dermatoligist. maybe they can find something that we cannot figure out.that is what i was going to do if the huggies did not work. so maybe thats something you might want to check into next good luck.

HI N.,
MY SON IS A YEAR OLD AND HE HAS EXCEMA. WHICH IN THE SAME CASE IT ALL BOILS DOWN TO VERY SENSITIVE SKIN. I DON'T BELIEVE IN PUTTING HYDROCORTAZONE BECAUSE WHAT IT DOES IS THINS DOWN THE SKIN AND IT CAN ACTUALLY TEAR EASY. EVEN IF IT WORKS I WOULD AT LEAST USE THE 0.5% NOT THE 1%,ADULTS USE 1%.
ANYWAYS IF YOU CAN PUT SOME A&D OINTMENT ON HER,OR USE A REALLY GOOD THICK EUCERINE LOTION,TRY THAT ALONG WITH MAYBE USING BODYSUITS SO SHE CAN'T SCRATCH BACK THERE.AND WHEN SHE STARTS TRYING TO ITCH I ALWAYS REDIRECT MY SON ATTENTION AND HE SOMETIMES FORGETS ABOUT IT.ITS USUALLY HEAT THAT BRINGS ON THE INTENSE ITCH.KEEP HER COOL AND FRANGRACE FREE.ALSO TRY TO SEE WHAT MAY ALSO BRING ON THE ITCH,SHE MAY BE ALLERGIC TO EGGS,PEANUTS,ETC.... SOMETIMES A LARGE AMOUNT OF THIS WILL BRING ON AN ATTACK OF THE ITCHIES. GOOD LUCK.
