Hi mamas,

We're having a birthday party for our soon-to-be 2 year old. Can anyone recommend some fun party games? The kids will range in age from 1-4.

Thanks!

Cookie decorating. You can make fun shaped cookies and have frosting and sprinkles for the kids to decorate them.

Cereal necklaces. Cut pieces of string and have bowls of Cheerios, Fruit loops or any "o" shaped cereal available for kids to make necklaces.

Fill a large bucket half way with clean sand. Tie blue (for boys)and red (for girls) ribbons or yarn to small toys such as cars, mini plastic dolls or plastic animals and bury the toy in the sand leaving the end of the ribbon out hanging over the edge of the bucket. Each child gets to pull a coordinating ribbon and keep the surprise toy.

I do not know many games for this age. You might want to think about having activities instead of games. Kids that young hate loosing, it makes them feel like they did something wrong and aren’t good enough. Once we had musical chairs and all of the young kids under 4 started crying every time they were out. So you have one winner you have a lot of crying kids on your hands. When my son turned 1 we had a water gun fight and trucks for the kids to play with and enjoy. We also had helmets and thing to decorate them with. It was so much fun. We received so many compliments on how much fun every one had; even the adults were having fun playing with the kids. I will not have games for my son until he is 5. When my god son turned 2 we roasted marshmallows and made smories. You have to have some one help of course, but the kids loved it. His birthday was in Dec so it was nice to stand by the fire.

just went to a 2yr party this wknd. No games, just areas set up for free play--it was really nice! A table for play-doh, a sand box/table, a play kitchen set up outside, and a couple other things. It is really hard to organize kids and you don't want to have to stress as the party host either, so this was a nice set-up!

You might also do Pin-the-tail and just not blindfold kids under 3.

my advice is keep it simple and let people socialize... and cupcakes, rather than cake is super easy too!

Kids just like to free play at this age, so don't over burden yourself. The ideas of having a playdough and/or craft/coloring table is perfect and can be tailored to your theme if you have one. If you want something more structured, you might get a CD of action songs and let them dance. There are some great songs out there that promote listening, such as the freeze dance, stand up if you're wearing a certain color, pass the ball/toy, etc. My favorite is one from Wee Sing. We also have a game called Hullabaloo that kids love and promotes listening and movement. However, it depends on how many kids you have as it can be hard to hear sometimes. Either way, have fun!!!

My dd is turning two on Dec. 5th. I am planning her party right now so I thought I would throw this out there. I just thought about what my dd loves to do and came up with craft tables. Maybe one with crayons and coloring books, one with bags they can decorate with stickers and markers or crayons, or gingerbread houses. We are in December so that may be out for you. Good luck and let me know if you come up with some. : )

My son turned 2 in August and we only played two games pin the tail on the donkey and I set up buckets for them to have a bean bag toss which was a hit. There were only 4 kids besides my son there so it was small. For prizes I had a big basket of stuff ranging from $.50 to 1.00 each child got a prize just for playing that way there were no winners or losers. Plus we had a pinata filled with fruit snacks, gold fish crackers and some candy.

Hope your little girl has an amazing bday!

I recommend the basics, hot potato, musical chairs and freeze dance (when you have music playing and you turn down the volume, everyone has to freeze, if they don't then they are out). At those ages they do not need elaborate games and they really enjoy these! I have played the same games for my 4-yr old since his 2nd birthday and the kids are still not tired of them!

For that age group, keep it simple! One or two games is perfect, then let them play. I like the old school games, Pin the Tail on the Donkey, Egg and Spoon Relay, etc. Have fun!

For younger kids I have found that art projects are a lot of fun, and easier to organize than games. Happy birthday to your little one - have fun!

We did pin the tale on the donkey but they used stickers instead of pins. They have different versions now with different types of characters. Check Party City or a store like that.
