I had ezcema as a child and my own kids get it too. It typically doesn't itch and can look like anything from little pimples, to dry skin, to actual sores if they pick at it. I remember I used to get it on my scalp and I would pick at it, not because it itched but just because I could. Sorry, gross I know, but kids sometimes do things like that and it was embarrassing when I was in school and other kids could see the sores.
A couple of things that have helped us are eliminating foods that cause any kind of a reaction. Others have mentioned soy and wheat, but for my kids citric acid can also cause problems especially on the face. It's also important to keep them well hydrated by drinking lots of water because I think dehydration makes it worse. Another thing I do and I know this sounds icky because I'd like to wash them everyday but I only wash them (especially with soap) when it's necessary if they have a breakout and I used very mild products intended for sensitive skin. I also make sure to use a good lotion but you have to be careful it's not something that will cause drying in the long run because some do. Medicated lotions are available.
Honestly, once it starts getting to the pimply stage the only thing that has ever worked for my kids is the hydrocortizon cream. Not what you wanted to hear, I know, but it's true. The trick is that you have to apply it per the doctor's orders consistantly until the rash is completely gone. I also keep some OTC hydrocortison cream at home because it's a super low dose and if I catch it before it's a big problem then I don't need the prescription strength. Fortunately I've only ever had to use it for maybe one week out of the year especially at this time of year because of the weather change or right at the beginning of winter. Also, for myself and my kids, it seems to be something we grow out of so it's not like we've had years of steriod exposure.
