Hey gals.. so I have a 2 year old with a history of asthma.. Not bad, I think she's outgrowing Thank God. however we keep getting this weird rash thing on her upper eyelid,, right below her eye, then when it's clearing up there, it shows up around the corners of her mouth almost to her cheeks, but not quite.. dr. says it's ezcema.. it just does'nt look like ezcema. she does'nt act like it itches,,, it almost looks like bad acne to me. ya know.... so any advice on what i should use on her face. of course gives me hydrocortisone to use, which i hate doing and it does nothing.... any suggestions on face producs, or perhaps is this food causing this or air allergy.. ugk very aggravating. it comes and goes too btw......

So What Happened?

thanks to everybody that responded with advice and encouragement.. very much appreciated.. wanted to get your thoughts on the whole elimination diet... I have read that ezcema can be triggered by allergic reaction to dairy, wheat, nuts, etc.. how the heck do u eliminate these foods esp wheat and which one do i start first.. this is soooo overwhelming.. quite honestly it totally stresses me out..

I have eczema. I have always had it.It is not fun. It does not always itch. If you don't believe what the doctor says, get a second opinion. If it does tun out to be eczema, talk with an allergist and a dietitian. Do this before trying out remedies, as you can make things much worse.

I was in almost the same boat. It was not on my girls eyes but it was everywhere else. My doctor sugessted Cetaphil lotion and Cleanser. It is not a medication it just sooths the skin. I applied the lotion once in the morning and the again after bath. Once I got it under control I have continued the cleanser as preventative and as soon as I see a small patch that might be the start of an outbreak I start the lotion again. It is safe to use on the face. Good Luck.

Hello,
My daughter is also 2 years old and also has ezcema under her eyes. Listen to the doctor put the hydrocortisone it works. Of course it took time, but thankfully it went away occassionally it comes back but i made it a ritual to put hydrocortisone on her ezcema spots everyday until it goes away. ( i never seen her scratch as well) As for the eye section i put it on q tip and place it under her eye carefully. Last tip i put it on her when she is sleeping. I hope this helps. Take care and good luck!

Asthma and eczema are are two common auto-immune diseases. My daughter started with eczema when she was a toddler and it has only gotten worse over the years. It is exacerbated by stress and sunlight. However, there are some excellent products that you can find through a dermatologist. Usually, there are separate products to be used on the face from those used on the arms and legs (two common areas for eczema outbreaks). As you note, there will be times when the outbreak subsides. But, you have to be vigilant in keeping your daughter's skin moisturized. Best wishes.

Hi, J.~ As someone who has had asthma and ezcema her entire life, I can sympathize with what you and you daughter are experiencing. I would stick with the hydrocortisone, but go back to the doctor and let him/her know that the strength/type that they prescribed isn't working. Every body is different and reacts differently to the varying levels. Over the years, I have tried every single organic, herbal and pharmaceutical suggestion from every source that I could find and I keep going back to the hydrocortisones because they are the only solutions that seems to eradicate the condition completely. There are other topical creams and soaps, as others have suggested, that will help clear up some of the symptoms and make your daughter more comfortable (itch, etc.), but they won't completely get rid of the problem. As her mother, please try to have this under control before she begins school. I know that seems a long way off, but it'll be around the corner before you know it. Kids can be most unkind when it comes to these types of things. Ask me how I know! The other comment that I'd like to address is what you say about her "outgrowing" her asthma. Asthma is a life-long condition. You don't outgrow it. You may have been successful in finding what triggers your daughter's asthma, (congratulations--that's a huge step!), but it may manifest itself later on in her life with different triggers or the same ones. This is something that I didn't know until very later on in life--and I nearly lost mine due to lack of information and proper medical attention. Although my asthma has been pretty severe at times and then almost non-existent at others, it has never stopped me from doing what I want to do. I'm sure the same will be true for your 2-year-old. Good Luck!

Hi J.. I have a suggestion that came to me some time last year because my niece suffers from eczema and had a constant patch on one of her cheeks. The person that gave me the advise works for a pediatrician, and by no means is medically certified, but eczema is a common occurance in her place of employement. The pediatrician that she works for always initially recommends that parents try using the mild lotion, Cetaphil, that you can buy at any drugstore, and I have even seen it in Costco. She told me that using it twice daily should clear the patch in up to 2 weeks. Well, I mentioned it to my sister. She began using it that evening and the patch cleared up in 3 days!
So, I am a BIG believer and actually keep some around the house "just in case".
Best of luck!

Raw milk is a great way to help with that and also asthma. We drink Organic Pastures Raw Whole milk. Also, my son had a weird rash that wouldn't go away and it wasn't ezcema but it acted like ezcema and we used the ezcema/psoriasis cream from Healing Scents. (www.healing-scents.com) It is 100% all natural so you don't have to worry about it harming her. It works so great. The rash was totally gone in 3 days!

Hi, My son has some of the same things going on. He started with ezcema at a young age and they told us he had asthma. Then rashes and bumps appeared. The dr.s said it was alergies. We have spent the last 3 yrs. battling against the alergies and rashes. Trying different things, including hydrocortisone and other products, but the rashes didn't get better. We had him tested for food and environment alergies. Then we started to go through the house to remove the toxins in our home and were amazed at how many toxins are actually in our homes just from everyday products we us. We found this wonderful company(thank God) with safe toxin free products. They are not only working great in my sons environment, but are healthy and safe for us all. This company has household products and health and body. I use a safe chemical free non toxic cream on my son everytime his rash or welts come up and they go away and stop itching. His skin is free of rashes, cracked and sore skin now. It is so wonderful to see normal clear skin and the flare ups are fewer and fewer. It gives such peace in my heart to see him improving and know I used safe products on him. I hope this helps and if you would like more info. I would be glad to share more with you.

Hi J.,
Could be food allergy and that may take a little time to figure out, wheat and soy being the most likely culprits. Meantime, the best skin remedy I know of is Organic Virgin Coconut Oil - you can get it at the health food store and since you can even eat it, it has no chemicals or other no-nos, try it on her face.
It also works great for diaper rash, psoriasis, acne, dry skin on elbows, knees, heels - in short it's just SUPER.
I would not use hydrocortisone on a small child.
Hope this helps.
Blessings to you,
A.

I have had great success with eliminating eczema by eliminating gluten from my diet (and thus my breastfeeding daughter's diet). It is super challenging but worth it to do it naturally and not the chemical/side effect/medical intervention way. If that seems too harsh I also rec. the organic eczema cream that they sell at Whole Foods. It really helped me.

I had ezcema as a child and my own kids get it too. It typically doesn't itch and can look like anything from little pimples, to dry skin, to actual sores if they pick at it. I remember I used to get it on my scalp and I would pick at it, not because it itched but just because I could. Sorry, gross I know, but kids sometimes do things like that and it was embarrassing when I was in school and other kids could see the sores.

A couple of things that have helped us are eliminating foods that cause any kind of a reaction. Others have mentioned soy and wheat, but for my kids citric acid can also cause problems especially on the face. It's also important to keep them well hydrated by drinking lots of water because I think dehydration makes it worse. Another thing I do and I know this sounds icky because I'd like to wash them everyday but I only wash them (especially with soap) when it's necessary if they have a breakout and I used very mild products intended for sensitive skin. I also make sure to use a good lotion but you have to be careful it's not something that will cause drying in the long run because some do. Medicated lotions are available.

Honestly, once it starts getting to the pimply stage the only thing that has ever worked for my kids is the hydrocortizon cream. Not what you wanted to hear, I know, but it's true. The trick is that you have to apply it per the doctor's orders consistantly until the rash is completely gone. I also keep some OTC hydrocortison cream at home because it's a super low dose and if I catch it before it's a big problem then I don't need the prescription strength. Fortunately I've only ever had to use it for maybe one week out of the year especially at this time of year because of the weather change or right at the beginning of winter. Also, for myself and my kids, it seems to be something we grow out of so it's not like we've had years of steriod exposure.

Both of my children have eczema, 5 year old daughter and 4 month old son. They have it on their feet, arms, ears and face...yuk! The product that I have been using for the past two years has really kept it under control (there is no cure for eczema, you just have to continue to use a good product)is from Arbonne International. They have a baby line (ABC Baby Care) that is pure and safe for their little delicate skin. It doesn't have any dyes or fragrances in it, which is what I like. They have body wash, oil, lotion, sunscreen, and diaper rash cream. You can go on-line to www.arbonne.com and find a consultant in your area or email me ____@____.com It has really helped both my kids and a lot of my friends children with eczema also. Just stay away from those products that are jelly, like vasoline, they just sit on the skin and don't allow it to breath. Good Luck! K.

Hi J.,
We were and still are in the same boat. Our 21 old month son was diagnosed with eczema when he was about 3 month old. As cortisone was not a solution for us, we tried to find the root cause of his eczama and we found it. He is allergic to detergents. Once we cut out detergents, he was eczama free within a matter of a couple of days and still is. Have a look at the web page www.solveeczema.org. It helped us to make our lifes a lot happier. Good luck with it. C.

Hi J. - just one thing to add - Glimpse Intuitive Skin Care is coming out next month from XanGo http://www.xango.tv/
It is all clean and green "skin nutrition" with no unsafe chemicals. I also have a website www.findgreenhere.com that you can check (safe cosmetics page, cosmetics database link) to be sure that anything you put on your skin or your baby's skin does not have any potentially harmful ingredients. Also, I have read that drinking mangosteen juice can help with asthma and eczema. Visit http://www.insidemangosteen.com/powerx/written-a.html (asthma) and http://www.insidemangosteen.com/powerx/written-e.html (eczema). Dear J.:

I've written to a few others about a product I make in my natural product line: rash relief. You might give it a try. Many people have had good results in using it to treat eczema and a host of other skin issues.

I make it in a lotion and an oil ... the mint oils in the blend can make the eye a little "blinky" at first, but it's not dangerous to use in the eye area (especially in comparison to hydrocortisone cream!). Let me know if you'd like a sample.

Hi J.! I believe that your daughter has the same thing my older daughter had before. The doctor's never did seem to fuss over it, I did! My sister in law has ezcema and she uses this mild soap from melaleuca. My mom sells that line of products and my sister in law swears by it now! She had ezcema really bad, and has been to the dermatologist over and over again! They even put her on prednisone before! But since using the melaleuca, she hasnt had to go back to the doctors! My mom has also used melaleuca products on my 2yr old daughter, when she stays over her house, and it works wonders on diaper rash!! Okay, so if you are interested in ANY of the products, you can email me so that I can get you in touch with my mom. She can answer any of your questions and even send you a sample. What area do you live in? Im in Antioch Ca.
