My son (17 mos old) has a mild speckly rash around his mouth. The pediatrician said that it is related to thumbsucking/blankie. I tend to agree, but I havent been able to clear it up. He said to use Aquaphor to form a barrier & then let it heal on its on. I tried it and it hasnt help. It has gotten more wide spread. Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thanks so much for the responses. So thankfully it wasnt hand foot & mouth disease-but you can never be too careful when it comes to our little ones. After rethinking the allergy, which it could still be but as to what food - I have no idea. Anyways, I started putting diaper cream on it when he sleeps & it worked! I know, it is a funny thought to put diaper cream on his face - but I was willing to try anything. So thanks again for the help, especially for helping confirm that it was either allergy or due to moistness. That way I knew better how to approach the situation.

My nephew has a rash around his mouth and he also gets it on the back of his legs. He is allergic to egg whites, but he also has ectzema. Rubbing his face with his blanket or his hands irritates the rash and makes it worse. His mother has a prescription cream that helps, but doesn't completely make it go away. The older he gets, the less severe his rash has been. A lot of babies grow out of ectzema and allergies.

I would not rule out hand, foot, and mouth disease. Check the hands for slight redness, then take him to Dr.

Hi V.,

You might need to try something like Neosporin after he goes to sleep at night (so he's less likely to get it in his mouth). The Aquafor forms a barrier, but it may also be holding in some of the moisture that is irritating it.

I wouild also call the dr's office and ask the nurse if there is something else to do and tell her what's happening.

Good luck!!

My son got this because of his "binky" and drooling from teething...I just put aloe vera on it, and don't "over-wash" the area, it will just make it worse.

My daughter use to get this a lot when she was younger as well. She sucks her fingers and the cold weather will bring it on. I would suggest going to www.savoirherbals.com and checking out their salves and body butters. They are all natural so if your child gets it in their mouth you don't have to worry. The healing salve worked wonders for my little girl. Plus they are made by a mamasource mama. Good luck. Be Well.

My daughter gets a rash like this when exposed to certain foods she is allergic to. Also consider toothpastes...we were using one with orange oil, which was a problem.

It probably is just the extra moisture - my daughter gets this when she's teething or using her paci too much. The only thing we've been able to do to get it to clear up is to keep the area dry - ie limit paci use. However, that's hard to do with a thumb! You might also make sure that he doesn't have a food allergy. Mild allergies can manifest by a rash around the mouth. So if you've introduced anything new lately, you might cut it out and see what happens.

I agree with the Dr. It's just the extra moisture in the area. Just try your best to keep it dry. It will be difficult because of the thumb, but try to stay on top of it. Another suggestion is when he is sleeping, take some corn starch and put a little on your hand and rub it on his face like lotion. I suggest corn starch because it does not contain any perfumes and will not hurt him if he gets it into his mouth. Good Luck!
