14 Months Will Stomach Flu - What to Feed Him

My 14 month just came down with the nasty stomach flu. He isn't keeping anything down. I've given him pedialyte, water, crackers, & toast. I was just wondering if there is anything else out there I could give him. If not, then I know we'll just have to ride this sickness out. I just feel so bad for him and want to help him feel better.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks for your helpful suggestions. He's still under the weather, but I know he'll get better soon. I learned this morning to stay away from milk. I thought he was better, but apparently not. Milk certainly did not agree with him. We'll stay away from that until I know he's completely healthy.

When my son's been sick like that, my doctor always says that keeping him hydrated is more important than food. Does your son have an appetite beyond what you've been giving him? I think the crackers and toast are probably sufficient, especially if he's still vomiting. And if he's still sick after a couple of days, I agree you should call the doctor. Good luck! We had the stomach flu last weekend - not fun!

Hey G.,

I am so sorry about your baby having the flu. Try to give him some popsicles to keep him hydrated.

The flu shouldn't last more than 2 or 3 days. If he gets letargic or has no wet diapers, you should call your doctor.

Good luck, girl.

Alina

You should give a tablespoon of almost-flat 7Up or Sprite every hour (at room temperature) After the first hour increase it to 2 TBSP, for another hour. And so on...till he's not vomiting anymore.

I hope by now your child is over the flu, but just some advice if not, or for the future. My son had a horrible stomach flu about 2 months ago. We made the mistake of trying to give him milk and his regular food too soon. Our doctor told us that they do not respond the way adults do because their digestive tracts are so immature. Therefore...she told us to only give very bland foods: rice cereal or oatmeal mixed with water, bananas, applesauce, crackers or cherrios for about a week. That is about it! The most important thing is keeping them hydrated. So lots of water, but in small amounts at a time. No milk though. We had to keep our son off milk for one week. Our doctor told us to introduce it back slowly, i.e. 1/4 milk, 3/4 water for a whole day. Then if they can stomach that, then 1/2 milk, 1/2 water the next day, and so on. Pedialyte is best for while they are sick, but it doesn't taste the best. My son wouldn't touch it so we just stuck with water. Hope that helps!
