At 5 am, my baby was throwing up in crib, awful smell with many food chunks (sorry!). Do you think it was something she ate or a bug? She appears ok now. Should I keep her home from my family Christmas party (as a restaurant)? Thanks!

What can I do next?

I have 2 at home puking right now. They're fine as soon as they're done, but any time they try to eat anything, it's right back up within 1/2 hr. My suggestion would be to keep her home. You don't want to have her get sick in a public place like that where there are heightened public health issues for the business owners. Hope she feels better!

The rule of thumb is she needs to go minimum of 24 hours without any vomiting for an all clear. But even then I usually wait an extra day because I would feel horrible if my kiddo made someone else sick. If she only vomits the one time you are probably clear after 24 hours but I wouldn't take her anywhere tonight.

Also, wait a minimum 1.5-2 hours after any episode of vomiting to begin to offer a tablespoon of liquid about every 10-15 minutes. The 1.5-2 hours gives the tummy muscle time to relax. If you try to give anything before that time it's going to come right back at you. Learned this invaluable tip from our peds office when my son was a little older than yours and I didn't realize i was offering liquids too soon.

If it's a one-shot deal, she's probably fine. Always be careful afterwards and feed bland foods. The BRAT diet (bananas, rice, applesauce, toast) is the standard. Small amounts, wait an hour, then add another small amount. And water. No dairy, no meat unless it's a bland piece of turkey (that's the other "T"). If that stays down and she seems fine in a few hours, it's probably nothing and she won't be passing a bug to the others at the party. Ask the restaurant for something bland too, or take your own food for her.

PS I don't think moms should apologize for giving info that seems gross - how can we help each other if we don't know what's going on?

If your baby only puked once then it was just something that upset her stomach or maybe she stuck her fingers in her throat or whatever. If she is still throwing up you need to wait until she is done before you take her out and infect the rest of the world. Kids just puke and it' the worst! Last month my three kids and myself all got the bug and were puking together - I had to have my mother come over and help me. Argh!

Good luck!

Hi! We are almost neighbors; I'm in Arlington! Anyway, funny to read your post because my 3-year old has had the stomach bug since last evening. In fact, though she seems a little better this morning, we have a holiday party with friends and kids planned for tonight here at our house and will probably have to cancel! I would feel awful if I went somewhere and one of the family members in the house had been vomiting. My experience with my two kids is that it sounds like your daughter has a little stomach bug (they are EVERYWHERE right now), but maybe the initial vomiting made her feel better because it always feels worse before it comes out! I would wait and see how she is this morning, go easy on the milk or don't offer it at all, and stick to watered down apple juice or Pedialyte if you have it (many will say no juice because of the acid, but neither of my kids ever drank Pedialyte and when they were sick like this, watered down juice was all they'd drink). Try to give her foods that are easy on the stomach, like toast or a waffle without butter or dry cereal. The longer she goes without vomiting, the more regular foods you can try on her. Also, some fluids are ALWAYS better than no fluids. My daughter is drinking ginger ale right now but she never liked it when she was under 2.

These bugs can be fast and basically gone with just one or two vomiting sessions, or they can linger 24-48 hours sometimes. My 5-year old had this three weeks ago and it was gone quickly... hoping it's the same strain for my little one. Good luck!

no fever? she's prolly fine. she might have burped real hard and caused her to start barfing. young digestive systems do weird things sometimes.
