My baby is a year old and was diagnosed with RSV on Monday. Her nose is running out of control but yet she is very stuffy and congested. She did not sleep well last night because she is a finger sucker but she is struggling to breath. I have put methol on her chest and feet and we have a hudmidifer in her room as well. Any suggestions on what else I could do would be greatly appreciated. We are very frustrated that we cannot help her.

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your advice. We have continued to do the saline drops and clean out her nose, and we also are still using her hudmidifier. We have her matress elevated and have rub on her chest and feet. We are slowly getting better. Thank you all.

Hello M. B. my name is A.. My youngest daughter and 9 year old son seem to have breathing problems frequently. My son mainly because of asthma but this is the time of year where children seem to get runny noses and congestion. My dughters nose was almost getting raw it was running constantly. I have been giving her 1 tsp. a day of childrens claritin and a decongestant called 2ml of Qunitex(perscription only) the decongestant gets rid of all the crud and the claritin if taken daily which my pediatrition said was completly safe will help dry up her runny nose and help her breath better. My daugter is going on 17 months so check with your pediatrition about the dosage on the claritin. My daughter has been sleeping through the nite and her nose has barely ran since I've been giving her the medications daily. The decongestant for my daughter and son is every 6 hours as needed. I hate medicating my kids I try to let most things run it course but sometimes it can't be helped. I hope this helps your baby feel better. Just talk with your pediatrition and see what they say.

One thing to help with the stuffy nose is to go to the drug store and get some saline drops for your child's nose. After applying the saline drops use a bulb suction to get the mucous out. the saline will help thin the mucous that comes with RSV as well as help to suction the nose. Do one nare at a time and only use about 1-2 drops of saline. Your child will probably fight this but it is well worth it.

We use Hylands Homeopathic (you can get it at Health Food stores) they have different ones that will help My sister and I swear by the Sinus tab.(7 kids between us)We also us Eucalyptus and peppermint oil on the chest. Keep away from eyes and nose. Also Xlear to put up babys nose. And she has to sleep upright. I surround my kids with pillows to keep them up. Or if you have a Boppy that works good.

I would definitely be in touch with her doctor. There are so many bugs out there, and now they say not to give kids the "cold" medications. With her respiratory problems, it's always better to be safe than sorry. I would also ask him if a humidifier is the best thing. Sometimes the "wet" air isn't good for them to breath in. Definitely call the doc!

Ugh, it is so hard when our babies are sick! I second the saline and "booger sucker" suggestion. My daughter (she'll be one on March 4th!) HATES it, but it definitely helps! Hang in there Mama. She'll be better before you know it!

We place phone books under the head of my sons mattress to elevate his head. We also have one of those waterless vapor plug-ins in the socket on the other side of his crib. Oh yeah. we also use the Johnson & Johnson menthol bath in the green bottle. Baby saline drops as well.
