11 Month Old Refusing to Drink

My son is a bit under the weather. He's really cranky and munching on his hand a lot, so I think he's got some teeth coming in. Well, I'm having a really hard time getting him to drink from his sippie cup the past couple of days (which he normally drinks just fine). I bought him Pedialyte to help keep him hydrated, but he refuses to drink it. I've tried an open face cup, but still, no luck. The only way to get some liquids in him is to give him a very watery cereal mixture.

I'm getting concerned. He doesn't have symptoms of dehydration, but, his urine output is at the very minimal. I think we had three wet diapers yesterday - and they were barely wet. He still cries tears and his mouth is normal.

He is eating his solids, just not as much as he would normally take in.

Does anyone have any hints/suggestions of different foods I could try that would provide plenty of liquids for my little guy?

I should also mention that I'm giving him Motrin, which helps with the crankiness and that's when he's most willing to eat.

Thank you for your help!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your quick responses and advice. I called the doctor and ended up bring my son in for a quick check. He's teething and his throat is swollen, but thankfully, it's not strep. He told me to do exactly what you all said to do - feed him lots of watery food i.e. applesauce, yogurt, pedialyte ice pops, etc. Thank you everyone!

You should call your child's pediatrician, if you haven't already and get recommendations from him/her - Your son may need to be seen in person. A symptom of dehydration IS decreased urine output. If he has no urine output, no tears, & dry mucous membranes then your son will need IV hydration.
You should always feel comfortable calling your pediatrician with questions/concerns like these. If you don't feel comfortable with your pediatrician, then you need to switch peds.

I would definitely call his Dr. I would also try the Pedialyte popsicles. They'll feel good on his gums if he's teething and will hydrate him.

Isn't this the worst???

My son refused Pedialyte too, except for the apple flavored singles. With the singles, they can hold the little bottle themselves, so they feel all cool and powerful! :) Also, they gave us pedialyte popsicles at the hospital (we were there for dehydration), and he ate a whole one (with his fingers) out of a cup. So we bought those for our home, too.

If he's not having diarrhea, you can give him jello! That much sugar isn't good for a stomach bug usually, but it's ok when you're trying to get a cranky kid to take some fluids. And finally, if he's not too snotty, try some drinkable flavored yogurt or kefir! Super yummy, and kids loooove it!

Good luck!

My son went through a time recently where he wasn't feeling well and therefore wasn't eating or drinking as he normally did. My doctor said to make sure that he took in a minimum of 12 oz. of liquid each day to make sure he didn't get dehydrated. Also, he checked his tears and also his mouth to make sure there was plenty of saliva. Also he looked at his finger tips and pushed on them to make sure that the blood refilled quickly to the ends of his fingers after being pushed on.

Obviously, fruit is 80% or more water and that would be a good way to get some fluids in him. Have you tried a cup with a straw.

This may just be one of those times were you have to wait it out and your son will get better and regain his normal eating/drinking.

All babies need to stay hydrated is about 1 teaspoon every 5-10 min. Try to take a oral syringe and squirt it in to his mouth. I had to do that with my son a few times. They may not like it but it keeps them hydrated!
