Hello ladies,

My daughter is 10 weeks old and is the sweetest baby, however she tends to get gassy in the middle of the night. If it's not gas it a bowel movment. My problem is when she wakes up she is often grunting with gas or because she has to go to the bathroom and since she is up i try to feed her so when she goes back down she will sleep longer, but she really doesn't want any food she truely only wants to pass the gas or go to the bathroom. I use Mylicon drops in every bottle. I don't think that i can stop this from happening but i think that if she didn't have these digestive issues she would be sleeping through the night. So does anyone have any idea how long it might take for her to be able to sleep through this issue. She is doing great other than that she is only getting up once a night and she is a great sleeper throughout the day. I would greatly appreciate any advice that you might have. thanks so much

Milicon is wonderful for gas! Also if you are formula feeding try soy milk it helps with gas and fussiness.

Make sure she burps really well after every couple of ounces, I assume shes only drinking about 2-4oz at this point. And maybe prop the head of her bed up a bit so she is at a bit of an angle. Try swaddling her and putting her on her side. Also try some mylicon drops for the gas.

K.,
it should be over soon.
believe it or not the digestive system finishes its job from 9-12 months -outside of the uterus. some call it colic. if she is thriving, gaining weight, etc., you are facing the end of the tunnel.
i used a product called gripe water (it is anise seed infused water) that seemed to soothe my screaming son. i was too tired to do it myself. check online for sources. and of course with your doctor.
good luck!

I'd look @ what you are eating if you are nursing. There are foods that are more often found to cause gas. If you feeding formula, then she might be sensitive to the formula. You could try gripe water if she has colic. Also fennel tea is great to relieve the gas.
Hope that helps.

We too used to put the gas relief drops right into our sons' bottles. The air bubbles would disappear immediately but that is of course if your daughter is formula fed. If your are breastfeeding then just give her the gas relief drops directly. Also, we were told by our pediatrician to make sure our son had a good burp before being laid down and to also make sure we kept him upright for 10 minutes after finishing his bottle before laying him down.

Also, if the gas is bad in the middle of the night and nothing seems to be working then do the "bicycle" with her legs. Lay her on your legs and then push her legs up against her tummy and then stretch them out and push them back in (keep repeating). This will help her get the gas out so she is not miserable. Just another idea for those tough nights.

I use to put a couple drops of mylicon in every bottle. It takes the bubbles right out so that baby doesn't swallow all that air.

Mylicon was what we used, and I think it helped a lot. No matter how thoroughly you burp after feeding, the gas at night is still a problem. Waking up only once at night is still pretty good. Where is she sleeping during the day that makes her so comfortable? Can she sleep there at night? During the day, I'd wear my son in a baby sling most of the time and I think the motion, and warm body contact with me helped his tummy a lot. They do grow out of this stage eventually.

Hi K.,

Congrats on your first child. Both my children were very gassy. Both my children had a harder time at night with gas than during the day. I contributed this to the sleeping position and them having a harder time passing gas. You should try different sleeping positions with her, ie propping her up a bit or even swaddling her at night. Also I breast feed both mine and when I cut dairy out of my diet it helped tremendously. If you are nursing try cutting out dairy. It may take up to two weeks for you to see any difference so be patient. If you are not nursing, then maybe trying a different formula to cut down on gas. I didn't give either of my children formula so unfortunately I can't give any good suggestions on which one to try. This also may be something she will just out grow on her on in a few weeks....new babies are sometimes unpredictable......that goes for when they get older too :-)

All my best and welcome to the MOM Club!!!

Hi K.,
If your daughter is having gas pains, would be to try some Mylicon. Its a gas relief in drops for infants. Could be Colic also. You may need to consult your peditrician if it doesn't clear up. Are you breastfeeding or formula? Either one one could cause gas as well if she gulps too much air and doesn't expell with burping. Breastfeeding, depending on what you may eat can affrect her digestion as well.
Best Wishes to you and your baby girl!

My daughter had that same problem when she was younger...first she was constipated, her doctor told me to change the formula, did that then she was gassy with the new formula. One thing he told me to do was buy those over the counter "Little Tummies" Gas Relief and put the recommended dosage (think it was like two drops) into her formula. Worked like a charm. Hope that helps. :-) Good luck!

I had the same advice as Lauren M. I just wanted also to add that you may want to see if she is sensitive to dairy. A friend's daughter was very sensitive to all dairy until she was one and would wake up really gassy just like your little one. My friend took out ALL dairy from her diet since she was breastfeeding and that made a HUGE difference in her daughter's gas issues. If you are formula feeding - may just try other non-dairy formulas like soy as some suggested.

Good luck!
